Development on the Sandalwood neighborhood began in the spring of 1960. Designed to provide inhabitants with the ideal balance of work and play, Sandalwood sits approximately half way between Jacksonville city center and its nearest beach, which lies roughly six miles east of the neighborhood.

Developer Pearce-Uible's primary Sandalwood concept contained 500 houses. To give the neighborhood an exotic ambiance, Sandalwood's original streets were all named after Pacific Islands. Mindanao Drive, Hawaii Drive East, and Kusai Drive are three of those original roadways. Two more streets, Majuro Drive and Luana Drive, were added to the neighborhood in 1969.

Nearly half the houses in the modern Sandalwood neighborhood are quite new. The original 1960s properties reside in the northern half of the area, whereas newer houses extend to the southern part of the neighborhood. Several educational establishments call the area home, including Sandalwood High School, established in 1971.

I'm from Nashville, TN and I moved to Jacksonville, FL in 2014 after I graduated high school. I came to Jacksonville because I wanted to change my environment. I found out is harder to find a job here than it is to find one in Nashville. The atmosphere and the temperature is tolerable, but I have to keep in mind the I spent 18 years in the mountains and now I'm living in the "Sun Shine State". On a scale 1-10 I rate Jacksonville a 5. In my Future I see me opening up a business in Jacksonville . This is the main reason I want to go to college and study business.

I live by a high school so it is considerably safe, however the noise and traffic can be extremely bothersome

The restaurants in this area are quite good! My only problem with them is that they never seem to be open when I would like to enjoy them.

Living in Sandalwood

History

-

Sandalwood was established by long-time builder-developer Pearce-Uible, which also erected properties in Rolling Hills in Westside, and in Harborview in Northside. The descriptive 1960s ad slogan for Sandalwood read, "On the Southside — halfway between business and pleasure " Many residents of the modern community still agree with that mantra. Many of the original Sandalwood residents were military families who later left the area. However, some early homeowners remain in the neighborhood.

No music venues, museums or theater companies currently exist within the neighborhood: However, many arts establishments reside in Jacksonville itself. Head over to the downtown area to visit the Cummer Museum of Art to view over 5,000 works produced within the last 8,000 years. The area between Julia Street and Market Street in downtown houses numerous fascinating art galleries. Seasonal events like the Jacksonville Jazz Festival make the city a dynamic place to live.

In the evenings, most locals either enjoy dinner with a full bar in a restaurant close to home such as LongHorn Steakhouse or head into Jacksonville to experience live music, a hopping bar scene and various other entertainment options.
