Living in Saugus

History

-

Saugus got its name from the Massachusetts hometown of Henry Newhall, who purchased a large amount of Mexican land grants. Some of this land became the city of Santa Clarita, which includes Saugus. In the early 20th century, the neighborhood became a popular site for early Western movies and movie star homes away from the city. It merged with three adjacent communities in 1987 to form Santa Clarita.

Museums and art galleries can be found in Santa Clarita, but not in Saugus. The Santa Clarita Marathon, which occurs annually, goes through Saugus along with other parts of the city. Runners can qualify for the Boston Marathon at this race. For those who don't quite have the endurance, the event also includes a half marathon and a 5K.

Restaurants

-

The neighborhood's dining scene features cuisines at affordable prices from a variety of locales.

Siam Rice II has a small town feel with simple decor and authentic Thai food. Get the spicy fried rice if you like your food hot, and make sure to add the spicy green sauce. Food comes out fast, and the servers bring a good mood to the table.

Pizza lovers should try out Vincenzo's Pizza. Using only fresh ingredients, you can tell with one bite why this family-owned diner has been voted "Best Pizza in the Santa Clarita Valley." Vincenzo's delivers, but you may want to bring the family to watch the game while you eat. Try the chicken, pepperoni and bacon pizza, then wash it down with a beer.

If you enjoy fresh sushi, head over to Mr. Sushi. Large portions at reasonable prices characterize the experience at this restaurant. Big eaters should try the all you can eat option and sample all the rolls Mr. Sushi has.

Nightlife in the city of Santa Clarita ranges from local bars to trendy night clubs. If you want to stay within the Saugus area, check out The Shot Exchange. True to its name, this pub has an extensive selection of specialty shots. Go on weekends for a packed dance floor and music played by one of the rotating DJs.

Transportation

-

Residents who commute or need to get around the neighborhood quickly tend to travel by car, although you may find other suitable methods as well.

Motorists can complete local trips easily, as traffic never gets too congested. Interstate 5, running north and south, lies west of the neighborhood; take it when you need to get into the San Fernando Valley or Los Angeles. California State Route 14, also running north and south, merges into Interstate 5 but can be taken north to Palmdale. Simply read the signs, and you'll find that plenty of parking exists on the streets in Saugus.

City of Santa Clarita Transit buses service the neighborhood. The Santa Clarita Metrolink, the closest station, connects residents with the buses and the Antelope Valley Line. Take the Antelope Valley Line for trips into Los Angeles. Taxis service the area, but ride share companies such as Uber do not.

Although you can take in the area's scenery on a walk, most tasks require another form of transportation. Many streets in Saugus have bicycle lanes, but the terrain has a number of hills that make biking more difficult.

Parks

-

The neighborhood's residents have access to plenty of free, well-maintained parks located throughout Santa Clarita. You can also bring your dogs along as long as you keep them on leashes.

Right next to Saugus lies the family-friendly Summit Park. Separate play areas for younger and older children give kids safe areas to have fun with their own age groups while adults enjoy a workout on the tennis courts or take a jog around the park. The Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA is adjacent to this park, providing even more recreational activities. YMCA membership fees vary.

Located just north of Saugus, Central Park provides fields for almost every sport imaginable, even ultimate frisbee. Pump some iron under the sun with the outdoor weight equipment, then relax next to the park's serene garden. Stop by during the summer for the Santa Clarita Concerts in the Park, which takes place on Saturday nights.

Cost

-

Life in the area carries a higher than average cost of living compared with the rest of the city. The cost of leasing apartments or houses tends to have a premium due to the luxury of the neighborhood. A one-bedroom apartment typically rents for about $1,600, although you may find cheaper arrangements.

Riding a City of Santa Clarita Transit bus to the city center costs $1, and gas prices come in around 13 percent higher than the national average. A pint at the local pub costs about $5.

Shopping

-

While this neighborhood's shopping scene focuses on smaller shops and a swap meet with a little of everything, you can find major shopping centers in nearby neighborhoods only a short drive away

The Santa Clarita Swap Meet has been held at the Saugus Speedway since 1963. Vendors sell new and used merchandise, and with the swap meet held three times per week, you'll have plenty of opportunities to find deals. Food stands and live music create a lively atmosphere the whole family can enjoy.

Boutique shoppers can visit The Expression for women's clothes and accessories. If you have trouble deciding what to get, the friendly, knowledgeable staff can provide wardrobe guidance. Prices range from affordable to upscale, but you can often find deals on designer clothing.

Those starting a family should check out Mother and Baby Boobtique. With everything from teething necklaces to baby slippers, you can stock up on the supplies you need here. The store puts its customers first and even does home deliveries.

The neighborhood has several major grocery stores nearby, including Ralphs, Vons and Whole Foods. While Saugus doesn't have any farmers markets, nearby Santa Clarita offers a few, including Abundant Harvest Organics and the College of the Canyons Farmers Market.
