Smith Hill is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and is known for its beautiful Italianate and Greek Revival architectural styles. Smith Hill is a wonderful neighborhood and so close to downtown. Close to schools, shopping and restaurants, yet quiet. Public transportation is everywhere, but so easy to walk to most things I need.

History

In 1636, Smith Hill was part of an original land deal made by Roger Williams. Industry in this area started with a community grist mill operated by John Smith. In 1638, Smith constructed a home and mill combination, which was located on the west side of the Moshassuck River. Further development did not occur until the 18th century. Between 1830 and 1930, Smith Hill grew into an urban neighborhood; however, during the 1960s, the Great Move occurred and industries moved to the suburbs. In 1990, efforts began to revitalize Smith Hill.

Smith Hill has a few local arts galleries and shops, including Belleau Art Glass and The Steel Yard. Annual events in this area include the Bolivian Festival and the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

Dining options in Smith Hill consist of an assortment of local eateries and restaurants that include authentic international cuisines, fast food and cafe fare. This neighborhood has convenient spots where you can grab a quick lunch and sit-down dinner locations where you can enjoy a leisurely meal. Multiple options are scattered throughout the area; however, the central location for restaurants borders State Highway 44.

Although Capitol Hill Diner has a diverse menu, but frequent guests recommend ordering breakfast. This small diner provides tasty morning dishes, such as pancakes, scrambled eggs, French toast and bacon, but it's the quick preparation and good service that keep diners coming back. This place has a reasonably priced menu, but get here before the doors close – Capitol Hill only serves breakfast and lunch, and it shuts down daily at 2 p.m.

Mandarin Garden prepares Chinese food that locals highly recommend for the plentiful portions and quick preparation. Don't let its hole-in-the-wall exterior fool you – the quality of food is excellent, and so is the service. Popular items on the inexpensive menu include General Tso's chicken, moo shu and lo mein.

Another well-known restaurant, Original New York System, makes appetizing American classics, such as hot dogs, burgers and cheese fries. This restaurant is popular for its wide range of wieners, including the Rhode-Island style topped with mustard, meat sauce, onions and celery salt. The specially prepared coffee milk also comes highly recommended.

Residents in Smith Hill like their nightlife lively. This neighborhood has several popular evening destinations, including Patrick's Pub and Snooker’s Sports Billiards Bar and Grill. Patrick's Pub pours great drinks and sports pool tables to amuse you as you listen to the tunes the DJ spins. Snooker's Sports Billiards Bar and Grill boasts 20 large TVs for your viewing pleasure; mosey up to the bar and order an appetizer to munch on while you enjoy the big game.
