History

Although most visitors stick to the main thoroughfares of Broad Street or Oregon Ave, the residential enclave of Girard Estate is worth a visit for its historical significance. Stephen Girard originally hailed from France but made Philadelphia his home in the late 18th century. His lasting impact can be felt throughout the city, from Girard Avenue in North Philly to Girard College, a boarding school for disadvantaged students. The Girard Estate marks the site of his former Philadelphia home, and spans the area from 17th to 25th streets, Oregon up to Passyunk Ave.

Today, 481 private homes lie on the same land. Many of these are semi-detached homes in the Mission, Jacobean Revival, and Colonial Revival styles, and stand in marked contrast to the sea of row homes in surrounding South Philadelphia. The Girard Estate Neighborhood Association organizes seasonal events in Girard Park, including movie nights and Easter egg hunts.

Restaurants

While the sports complex draws the largest crowds, local entertainment isn't limited to die-hard sports fans. Some of the city's best restaurateurs are increasingly taking their chances and heading southwest. Among these is Marc Vetri, whose newest venture, Lo Spiedo, features a custom roasting spit where everything is slow-roasted, from brisket to octopus. If you're not sure where to start, the beef tartare is a fan favorite.

If it's cooked beef you're after, sidestep the white tablecloths and head over to Nick's Old Original Roast Beef, a South Philly staple. Locals rave about the signature sandwich served on a kaiser roll with provolone – "prov" in local slang. Get this with a side of gravy fries and an ice cold Pabst, and you'll know why this place has been a local favorite since 1938.

After dinner, catch a show at JR's Bar, where you can find the best in local talent and the cheapest beer. With its punk aesthetic and dingy lighting, this place is 100% dive bar and a first stop for anyone who likes loud music.

If the show is out and you're still craving a late-night snack, the Penrose Diner is one of South Philly's best. With daily specials and a family-friendly menu, Penrose serves breakfast, lunch and dinner to a wide array of hungry locals. It's open 24 hours on weekends.

Transportation

South Philadelphia West is a smart option for anyone looking to access the city while enjoying the comforts of a residential neighborhood. The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transit Authority, or "SEPTA" as it's known to locals, runs a subway line under Broad St., with stops at Snyder Ave, Oregon Ave, and AT&T Station, the line's southernmost stop located at Pattison Ave. Route 20 runs north/south along 20th St., and the 79 takes riders across South Philly east/west along Snyder Ave.

Cabs are easy to find in the area, particularly along Broad St. Many area cab companies have taken a cue from car services like Uber (which services the area) and started to offer smartphone apps specifically for reserving a cab. Those commuting by car have easy access to both I-76 and I-95. Street parking is fairly easy to find, and the Parkway Corporation operates a garage on Broad St. between Mifflin and McKean for $6/hour. If it's a little outdoor exercise you're after, hop on one of the many bike-accessible routes across town. Oregon Ave. and 21st Street both have designated bike lanes.

Parks

-

Walking among the densely packed row homes of South Philly, it's easy to long for greener space. Look no further than Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, a true outdoor oasis located just west of the Sports Complex and home of the '94 Lollapalooza music festival. Despite FDR's 348 acres, the park remains a bit of a hidden gem, bordered by highways on two sides, and comprising the southernmost tip of the city. FDR is, however, well worth the southern trek. Along with your standard dog runs and ball fields, the park houses a golf course, 20 tennis courts, and a world renowned Skate Park. There's even an American Swedish Museum within the park's borders. For a park even closer to Center City, head to Barry Playground, a true community hangout complete with volleyball and basketball courts, as well as a public pool.

Cost

-

Considering the wealth of parks, shopping, and nightlife to be found in the area, rents in South Philly West are still relatively affordable. The median rent price for a 1 bedroom is around $730 a month, nearly $300 cheaper than the Philadelphia average. Gas prices are fairly low compared to the national average, but many residents opt out of the issue altogether by choosing public transit. Via SEPTA, a one-way fare into town costs adult riders $2.25, and seniors ride for free. For the same fare, the bus provides an above ground alternative.

In a neighborhood known for its dive bars, you can be sure to find a wealth of cheap beer, but don't go searching in the liquor store--Pennsylvania liquor law dictates that beer be sold separately from wine and liquor. Many local bars cash in on this "blue law," selling 6-packs to go.

Shopping

-

There are several main drags that make up the best shopping in South Philadelphia West. For a pedestrian-friendly view, take a stroll down Packer Avenue, home of the famous Termini Bros Bakery, satisfying local sweet tooths since 1921. Just north of Packer lies Oregon Ave, where the folks at P & S Ravioli Company are ready to serve you with more savory Italian specialty items. South Philly Tees is the premiere neighborhood shop for custom design apparel, offering men's, women's and kids' clothing with one-of-a-kind designs. For bigger chain retail options, head directly west on Oregon to the Shoprite supermarket, or stop by Quartermaster Plaza, home of BJ's wholesale, Staples, and the Home Depot.
