Situated on the banks of the Tar River, about 15 miles east of Rocky Mount, Tarboro is a peaceful small town with a rich heritage. Tarboro contains the second oldest legislated town common in the nation, spanning 15 acres of tall canopied oak trees and decorated war memorials. The Town Common also serves as the gateway to Tarboro’s 45-block Historic District, the largest official historic district in North Carolina.

Tarboro is home to a close-knit community, which comes together for a wide variety of annual events such as the Great Tarboro Art Bazaar, A Tar River Christmas, Blount-Bridgers Historical Gardens Annual Symposium, Happening on the Common, and much more.

The lush surrounding area offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation near Tarboro. Residents and visitors enjoy acres of parks and walking trails, access to golf courses, fishing and kayaking on the Tar River, and numerous athletic fields and courts in Tarboro.

Raleigh is just an hour’s drive away while the beaches on North Carolina’s Outer Banks are about a two-hour drive away from Tarboro. Getting around from Tarboro is simple with access to U.S. 64 and U.S. 258.
