The hamlet of West Hempstead is located on the west side of the Town of Hempstead on New York’s Long Island. West Hempstead is a terrific community that’s ideal for commuters – there are three train stations along Hempstead Gardens Drive. Hempstead Lake State Park is located on the southeast side of the hamlet. With its cozy cottages along tree-lined streets, West Hempstead is a family-friendly community with good schools and parks, including Echo Park Swimming Complex and Halls Pond Park. Walt Whitman once served as the headmaster of the District 17 Schoolhouse, and Orville Wright called West Hempstead home in the 1930s.
