I live close to Avon and they continue to build restaurants and places for the community to develop a nightlife. Over the 4 years of my stay, I have seen more young families move into houses in my community and change the environment of my neighborhood positively, There are more kids out and more adults enjoying nature and feeling safe.

Overall It is an area of town that can be defined with neither 'bad' or 'good'. It has it's rocky roads, but it also has its really clean and nice roads. Generally, the area you visit may paint a highly negative or positive view of West Indianapolis, but the best way I would describe it is mediocre. The roads get potholes, and then they fill them in, and then it's like driving over 4 speed bumps. Theres not much construction but when there is, it only lasts for a handful of months.

The west side of Indy has always been home for me. I grew up in Brownsburg and am now at an Indy address. I've always loved the diversity in the area that I am in and the lack of perfect cookie cutter houses.

I live at the end of a quiet street and I don't get out a whole lot. I only gave 2 stars because everywhere you look all over this city is trash all over. This city is so big it takes over a half hour to get from one side to the other. Pot holes are horrible as well as traffic. Crime rates and shootings are so unbelievably astronomical. I thought I was moving to a way better side of town when I moved from Twin Air on the East side to Haughville on the West side. One day out of curiosity I googled worst sections of Indianapolis to live and was flooded to see Haughville top of the list ranked #1 most dangerous areas to be. Like I said I stay home as much as possible and work on my schoolwork. On the bright side though anytime you want to go shopping there are tons of stores all over Indy. There are plenty of parks to go to. Lots of movie theaters, bowling allys, bars, miniature golf courses and dog parks. There are lots of resources around giving a helping hand to those in need.

History

-

West Indianapolis settlers began arriving in the 1820s, making the area one of the oldest neighborhoods in the city. Many came here because they were donated tracts of land. During the 1870s, others came to work the stockyards and newly-created industries, including the Belt Railroad. 1894 saw the incorporation of the area as the Town of West Indianapolis, although it was soon annexed by the city in 1897. Early on in the 20th century, the Perry Manufacturing Company was established as the world's largest cart, wagon, and carriage production site. By 1930, it had become a General Motors plant, sparking the industrial and manufacturing boom that persisted into the 1970s.

Today, West Indianapolis remains a hard-working neighborhood with many churches and recreational sites. The Rolls-Royce Allison Heritage Trust Museum showcases aircraft, land vehicles, and engines from WW ll and beyond.

Restaurants

-

Restaurants can be found along West Morris and West Washington Streets. For a taste of old-world Indianapolis, head over to John's Famous Stew, a local favorite via Macedonia that has been located in the Indianapolis area for over a hundred years. Made from scratch with Mother Strangeff's age-old recipes, the stews hearken back to a simpler time. Try the classic John's hearty stew, with potatoes, carrots, and tender beef slow-cooked to perfection in a savory broth. Top things off with a homemade peach or blackberry cobbler.

Pub and bar offerings consist of the Rural Inn Bar on East Michigan Street and Harding Pub & Grub on South Harding Street.

Hailing a cab can be difficult in West Indianapolis, but private companies serve the area on an on-call basis. Uber services the area as well for ride shares. Parks

West Indianapolis contains only one park, but a large natural area borders the area, which also lies in close proximity to the Indianapolis Zoo. The natural area costs nothing, but the zoo charges a small entrance fee.
