Soon after, colonists from the Plymouth Colony settled in the area, and in 1754, Fort Halifax was built here at the confluence of the Sebasticook and Kennebec rivers. The blockhouse still remains as part of Fort Halifax Park, and it is the oldest blockhouse in the country.
