West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at MAA Westchase
Westchase is the worst place I've lived in Charleston, by far. It's unsafe - multiple cars were stolen in the two years I lived there, my laundry was stolen from the communal laundry machines (that were regularly broken). It's dirty - we had issues with mold if we did not run a large dehumidifier 24 hours a day (resulting in a higher electric bill.) Even then, we still had mold on the ceilings and doors. We had roaches regularly, despite our own cleanliness. It's loud - you can hear all of the traffic from 526 in quite a few of the units. The infrastructure for the internet package you are required to get is so old that the internet is not reliable at all. I work from home, so this was quite disruptive in addition to the water being turned off property wide semi-regularly. When we moved out, we paid extra for a cleaning package but we were still charged $150 for "wall treatments", even though the walls are supposedly painted between residents. I called multiple times to try and talk to somebody about this and never got a call back. When I did eventually get somebody on the phone, they told me I had to call back and talk to somebody else about that. (Apparently it is too difficult to leave a note requesting that person contact me. A+ customer service.) Honestly, just avoid it. It's the worst place I've ever lived. Shoutout to the maintenance guys though - they were the only cool thing about the place.

This place has a great location and my experience with management was pretty good. But outside of that, there is just nothing about it that warrants it’s current price. My apartment and clothing constantly reeked of cigarettes (I don’t smoke…), there is constantly dog waste everywhere on the property, and there’s a certain dingy and shoddy feeling in the place. When it was sub-1k, it was reasonable, but now, you should believe me when I say you can get way more value for the same price than this place.

Do NOT get packages delivered to your residence. Ive had two packages stolen/ lost and notified office. Nothing happens, and no response. Spent 250 dollars to get a PO box. Also the walls are extremely thin and anytime neighbors play their music at ignorant levels your whole unit will shake. Also, again, office was notified and nothing changes. Be wary.

The staff is friendly to your face and when they are trying to sign you. After you sign you’re stuck dealing with indecent attention to clear violations of space. The back part of the complex floods, people don’t pick up after their dogs and leashing isn’t enforced so some pets attack others. Usually some kind of ruckus occurs weekly- ambulances, police, loud people in common areas. The auto-care area is just a vacuum you have to pay for and a hose. The “dog park” is not maintained. Packages get stolen/lost.

My experience so far is kinda the opposite what i heard so far... The laundry center breaks down every week and the replacement takes again at least 2 weeks. There is no noise cancellation at all so if you need to get up early for work expect to be woken up either from a car engine or a loud neighbor. Inside the Appartement you got not one roommate, you got 4 since you can hear everything, the floor is just a thin wood plate inbetween. The office people are friendly but don't get distracted from that, if you need help most of the times they try to brush you off. So to get things moving you need to take multiple visits.

I moved to Charleston two years ago, and selected Westchase due to availability. I needed a two bedroom and most others were booked up. The community was very nice to look at. I don't have many complaints about my first year, but the second year was totally different. New management. The community suffered. They aren't very responsive, I waited a week to get my kitchen light fixed. It took me calling them the last day of the week and demanding it be done. The neighbors were not great at all either. So much trouble and nothing I could do about it. Accused me of my dog barking, and my dog doesn't bark. I had a doggy cam, and she is a well trained service dog. My advice is stay away. Do your research and find something better. I was lucky enough to have new employment and had the means to upgrade to much better. Beware.
When I moved in MAA bought the complex, they updated the apartments, paved the driveways, updated the pool and gym area and made it very comfortable. The staff is amazing and the rent is very reasonable. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a place to call home.
Great environment, property is nice, staff is friendly. Pool is awesome because it's right beside the pond. NO BREED OR WRIGHT RESTRICTIONS! 5 stars! No dog park though, but enough space for them to walk around
The staff are friendly and helpful. Easy to pay rent online. Beautifully kept grounds and pool and fitness center. Large walk in closets in both bedrooms. Lots of room and open. Friendly neighbors. Only complaint is the laundry center breaks down alot.
The management here has done a great job improving the complex. The weight room and pool area is great along with the main pond which has a lot of fish and turtles. The entire complex is pet friendly and has a couple of large open areas for dogs to play and get exercise.
Centrally located 3 minutes from the interstate. 10 minutes from down town charleston. Very diverse yet hidden little oasis. Lots of models and plans to chose from. Spacious closets, pet friendly all breeds. A true since if family and resident appreciation. There's always a prize,give away, contest, or something just to Sheila us(the residents) how much very valued. There's timely handling of maintenance requests. Upgrade gym and pool all equals my little slice of heaven.
