Appleton is a charming, green city located about 30 miles southwest of Green Bay. It straddles the Fox River at the north end of Lake Winnebago. In addition to a rolling, lush landscape with mature trees and river views, Appleton is a college town -- home to Lawrence University, a private liberal arts college founded in 1847. You'll find plenty of student traffic on College Avenue, which houses Lawrence University. However, more students live nearer to the University of Wisconsin in Menasha, to the south of Appleton city limits. While looking for apartments in Appleton, be aware that this large city spans three counties: Winnebago County, Outgamie County, and Calumet County.
You might be surprised to learn that Magician Harry Houdini lived in Appleton for a while as a youth.

Property Ratings at Marquette Highlands Apartments
I called 4 times in order to speak to someone only to learn that they have no apartments available.
Been calling this place for a month and leave a few voice mail. never heard anything from them.
Cannot contact anyone. Left 2 voicemail and 2 emails and haven't received any response. Don't waste your time.
Worse place ever. One day I found a rat on the sink and the only thing management did was to put traps... 5 more rats later... they finally decided to find the hole (they were coming from the wall). The maintenance guys were very unprofessional. The hallways always smelled so bad (like garbage). The first days after moving in there was a strong smell of cat and we told the manager Karen who said she didn’t smell anything and said the previous tenant didn’t have a cat while I kept having my socks full of cat hair every time I walked in my socks. There was a horrible smell on the closet that my clothes stink really bad. The smell of people smoking cigarettes was on the apartment all day, plus also the smell of other people’s food. They hardly shovel the snow on the parking lot and main entrances! And was a pain have to walk through the snow to get to the doors from the parking lot. Everything was incredible old (falling over). I couldn’t wait for the lease to be over... It was a living hell every day
Definitely one of the best values per square footage in the Appleton area. In the year and a half I lived there, I didnt have a single problem. With that being said, you get what you pay for. Very much a budget property, the grounds themselves will get mowed but for example the parking area next to the tracks never has the trees and bushes trimmed so by the end of the summer they are starting to grow around cars. The apartments themselves and the hallways are starting to show their age. There are definitely cars in the parking lot that have definitely not moved since I moved in, but there are enough spaces that it typically isnt an issue. The landlord does take a while to get back to you, however she will eventually get back to you. Maintenance guy was hard to get a hold of, but once you did he was prompt to fix the issue. I was in the apartment second closest to the tracks and honestly the noise was never a problem. In fact, unless it was dead quiet in my apartment AND my neighbor was blaring music I cannot hear my neighbors. If you are willing to deal with management taking a while to get back to you and not get anything fancy with your apartment. This place is alright. Honestly the only problem I had my entire time living there was the neighbors across the street in a completely different town-home complex, who were always loud and up until very early in the morning.
Old and not maintained buildings. Everything inside is cheap and breaks. The range hood in my kitchen fell off -- one day I got home from work and it was just dangling by wires because the idiot who installed it didn't even use anchors in the walls. It looks like my cabinets will be the next to come crashing down. Maintenance guy is a loser. Don't even bother placing a call. He will belittle you and make you feel like crap for filling out a repair request. He's too busy smoking, drinking, and partying outside his apartment with his trashy friends. The hallways literally smell like bad pot smoke and GARBAGE. Previous reviewer talking about the kids stampeding is 100% spot on. It's rediculous. They make more noise than the nearby train that goes by a few times a day! They also use the hallways and common areas as their own personal trash can. It's disgusting. Rent is cheap and now I know why. Beware! There was a fire in one of the 3 buildings about 10 years ago. I understand why after being here 2 years. Most of the tenants here don't give a crap what they do -- and the management doesn't, either.
Marquette Highlands was my first home with my husband and we had a very happy experience. I always felt safe and the staff were professional and friendly, all the times we needed something we could count on them. The appliances worked fine and never gave us any issue. The property isn't new but is taken care of and the common areas were clean. Although it's near to train tracks, the sound wasn't an issue at all. The children have a safe and equiped park to go just a few blocks away, I enjoyed going for a walk or jogging there, even in the evening.
As the other person said the lady in charge NEVER answers her phone or returns calls. She takes hours for lunches or at least is never in the office. The maintenance man does come when he feels like it, makes you feel bad for even having him come and he also sits outside his apt every night with other neighbors as they are loud and drink and smoke all night. So if you enjoy that, move here. Kids STAMPEDING through the halls all day. People with trash all over their patios and balconies and the parking lot is also used as a junk yard with at least 4 cars that are immobile. A sketchy place to live and I would check elsewhere.
Price is great for the size although there are some downfalls of living here. Maintenance comes whenever they feel like it and phone calls are never returned so you never know when and if they will be coming. This place is old so things are always in need of repair. Washers and dryers don't work well at all. Washers break and dryers don't dry your clothes. There is a laundromat not too far from the apartment so I would recommend going there which I see a lot of people do. The apartments does live near train tracks so you will at some point either hear it in the morning, during the day, or at night. My biggest issue with the apartment is the ant infestation. It has been a problem for a long time. Had an exterminater come in twice but that didn't do the trick and now they are back again which is disgusting so beware. I hope this review helps!
