Development on the Sandalwood neighborhood began in the spring of 1960. Designed to provide inhabitants with the ideal balance of work and play, Sandalwood sits approximately half way between Jacksonville city center and its nearest beach, which lies roughly six miles east of the neighborhood.
Developer Pearce-Uible's primary Sandalwood concept contained 500 houses. To give the neighborhood an exotic ambiance, Sandalwood's original streets were all named after Pacific Islands. Mindanao Drive, Hawaii Drive East, and Kusai Drive are three of those original roadways. Two more streets, Majuro Drive and Luana Drive, were added to the neighborhood in 1969.
Nearly half the houses in the modern Sandalwood neighborhood are quite new. The original 1960s properties reside in the northern half of the area, whereas newer houses extend to the southern part of the neighborhood. Several educational establishments call the area home, including Sandalwood High School, established in 1971.

My husband and I moved here about 6 months ago, and we have loved living here! Units are beautiful, maintenance team is great, staff is lovely, and the walking trails throughout the property are great especially if you have a pet. Both pools just got updated, so we are excited to try them out once it gets a little warmer :) The new weight and cardio rooms are also SO convenient.

I have lived at Monterey for about 2 years now and things have only progressively gotten better. They are doing a ton of renovations - I cant wait to see what comes next. The gyms are remodeled with brand new equipment. They have 2 fitness centers now. I love the new color on the buildings. Plus, everyone is so sweet in the office, I always feel at home when I go in there. Cant wait for the remodeled pools to open next month!!

Property is in need of Major repair. The potholes throughout are awful. They damage your car just to drive in and out . Cheap patches that are just bad and new ones pop up the following week. Asking way to much for Rent . Only 1 pool only 1 trash area - is on a well system I think . . I don’t recommend. Also Internet is always going out . So if your a remote worker . Good luck . 2 stars because the apartment itself is ok . Needs updated.

The apartment was great at first, and then new people came into the complex and tried to do "renovations" that have continued for way too long and caused us so much distress. The walls are extremely thin, the entire complex is pothole ridden. Like driving on a gravel road. Don't do it.

We started the repairs here in January 2022 by replacing roofs, pressure washing, replacing any rot or damaged siding, and then followed with new paint on all buildings. Next up, we will be installing new gutters around the property, completing 2 pool remodels, and office and amenity renovations. Monterey is a great place to live! It’s close to just about everything you’d want to do in Jacksonville. It’s surprisingly affordable due to how nice the neighborhood and units themselves are. Alyssalyn was amazing when helping my girlfriend and I get situated. She would respond to us almost immediately, while it took other places weeks to even see our e-mails or voice mails. She is by far the kindest and friendliest person I’ve met while looking for apartments in my 7 years of doing so.Her great attitude and and her helping us every step of the way made it much easier for us to call Monterey home.

Recently bought by a new owner who has really jacked up rents even for renewal much more then the standard max of 3 to 7 percent. . They no longer care . It’s just about getting the most they can get . Most of my neighbors who lease is up are leaving due to this and I’m seeing a lot of people moving into a space. I hope that this next year they bring renewals back to a reasonable rate as that would provide stability for a very much needed example by a management co . It remains to be seen . All I can say is that, You won’t receive a price break and be prepared to pay whatever the highest market rate is when your lease is up . I love it her unfortunately I probably won’t be able to stay once my lease is up . It use to be a family feel . It’s all business these days .

What’s a great staff have a great place to be here. Israel has been very helpful along with AlyssaLynn. These two have made it very helpful for us to be here and to stay here for a long time. The staff goes above and beyond for the residents and create a comfortable place to live at.

I lived at Monterey for a couple of years and I cannot express how amazing the staff and maintenance folks are. They have by far been the best staff in all of my rental years. They are very quick to respond!!! The apartments are centrally located and so easy to get around Jacksonville. I would recommend these apartments to anyone! Budget friendly too!

I have lived in Monterey Condominiums for approximately the last 5 years (from 2012-2017) in a one bedroom unit [the smaller one bedroom]. I am only moving because I have been accepted into a graduate school program in Kent, Ohio and need to relocate for the position. I absolutely love and definitely recommend living at Monterey. I have had friends that live in the larger one bedroom and the two bedrooms, two story town-home. All of the units have been nice and I particularly like the town-home units because they have fireplaces. The neighborhood is quiet and has a variety of tenants. There are some college students here, some families, and some retirees. The neighbors are very friendly and I have had all positive experiences living here. The neighborhood is also very pet friendly (I have a 50 lb lab mix) with many residents having pets of some sort – lots of dogs. Additionally, the office staff is friendly, helpful, and diligent. Christina and Jessica currently work in the office (2017), with Christina as the property manager. Sue was a former manager and I did not have any problems with her either. They are very sweet and quick to help with any problems or questions. There is one maintenance man on staff and one painter who often helps with some minor maintenance requests. All of my requests for maintenance have been completed within 24-48 hours - for serious problems such as with air conditioner issues they are always fixed the same day. I am surprised at how well the neighborhood is able to complete requests with only one man there. The community is managed by a management company (Bayshore Grove - I think) and they have an after-hours messaging service. On one occasion my A/C went out at night and they were able to get someone out to service the A/C IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT (it was around 11:30 PM during the summer). I can only think of one negative to the community and that is the cost. For my own budget, it is at the top end and my rent has increased in minor amounts every year since living here. They only offer 12 month leases so you do not have the option to lower your rent with a 24-month lease (during the time I have lived here). Pros: -Friendly office staff -Quiet community -Diverse residents -Pet friendly -Good maintenance: quick and efficient -Nice apartments -Washer/Dryer & Dishwasher -After hours service Cons: -Cost, minor increases in rent since I have lived here
