Lansing is the capital city of Michigan, neighboring one of the state’s most notable universities, Michigan State University. This institution’s sprawling campus borders Lansing to the east, and a hefty portion of the student population calls Lansing home, giving this city a college town vibe. Though Lansing is the state capital, rentals in the area are surprisingly affordable, offering apartments, condos, and houses.
Downtown Lansing is a charming historic district along Grand River, featuring must-visit historic sites like the Michigan State Capitol and overlooking shops, cafes, bars, and more along South Washington Square. Local entertainment options appeal to residents and visitors alike, such as the Cooley Law School Stadium, the proud home of the MiLB’s Lansing Lugnuts and the Impression 5 Science Center. Small businesses keep Lansing’s charm alive, so be sure to check out the Lansing Brewing Company on Shiawassee Street after you find your affordable apartment.

Property Ratings at Motor Wheel Lofts
New to the area we toured 6 other major apartment properties, and Motor Wheel Lofts far exceeded the other properties offerings! Motor Wheel Lofts was by far the best in quality, safety and style and so many more areas. From the minute we walked in the door we were welcomed and comfortable. The overall aesthetic and friendliness of everyone we have met is genuine. They care about their community.
MotorWheel has done an excellent job at maintaining the cleanliness of all aspects of the exterior and interior of the building in a timely manner and I can tell that they take pride in the landscaping around the building to compliment the architecture. The security measures that were implemented in make sure I had nothing to worry about made me feel good about making sure nobody would be a concern to my wellbeing. Most importantly Justin who did my maintenance a few times for the fridge and to replace a bathroom vanity, was professional in his manner and came back to make sure what he installed was working properly. He does excellent work in his service. An all around great place to rent at for the premium location with access to Downtown and Olds Town being about .5 miles away.
I lived here for a year and was very interested in the building at first sight- it is a restored motor wheel factory and I'm a big fan of such projects. The lobby is quite nice and units have polished concrete floors, high ceilings, giant pillars, and large windows. The area is safe, quiet, and bikeable to downtown. A couple amenities offered here that stand out to me that I don't think many other buildings offer: EV Charging: there's currently three level 2 chargers that are available to tenets for free which is a great bonus if you drive an EV. It also seems there's additional accommodations for charging if you choose to pay for a spot in the underground garage (which I did not but it would've been a luxury since it stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter) Recycling: Maybe not a big deal to some but it is to me- every other apartment I've been in has had 0 options for recycling. Here you can recycle all normal types of materials including large boxes if needed. Trash & recycling never piled up or smelled. There is also a trash chute on each floor which I found very convenient. Overall a cool building, good value and location.
Great layout, tall ceilings and huge windows. Enjoyed my time staying here.
I've really enjoyed my stay so far at Motor Wheel Lofts. After a long day, I feel like I have a relaxing space to wind down and the community is super friendly. The place is relatively quiet, and the staff that works with you is always very helpful, reliable, and responsive. I have a beautiful view with large windows and the pictures that you see online are on par with what you get. In my experience, other places that advertise their spaces have really outdated pictures so I know just how disappointing that is; Luckily, with this place, you don't have that issue. :)
I've lived in many apartments in East Lansing and Lansing. Motorwheel lofts by far had the best management and ambiance. I would recommend this place, the units are maintained well, the online payment system is easy to use and clear, and management is in regular communication with residents. 5 stars above and beyond.
I loved living here. Management was super helpful and cooperative. Very clean place overall. Also a good spacious studio for one person and even more! Very highly recommended
Motor Wheel gives me everything I need in a home: safety, convenience, excellent staff I can rely on and a beautiful building with great character and history. I moved in 12/22 and it has been incredible. I love the character in the building and the gym that located on site is a bonus. I moved into a 1st floor apartment, but a week ago I moved to the second floor for more space, and it simply got BETTER! If you are looking for a great place to live, that will get you anywhere in the city in a matter of minutes, this is the place! I am looking forward to being here until I have lived on all three floors! :)
MWL for exceeded my expectations and is the coolest place I have ever lived. Not only were the aesthetics unbelievable but the cleanliness was unmatched. I recommend MWL to all of my circle. Location is huge for me and is by shopping and my gym, M43 Fitness.
My girlfriend and I lived here for one year and we loved our place, had a view of the sunset/downtown Lansing, and had many friends over who loved our place too. The gym and parking garage are bonuses as well!
The view of the city / sunsets were my favorite part about living here. The units never felt small with the high ceilings, and of all apartments I’ve ever lived in, these lofts are by far the quietest with their soundproofing.
I loved my time at Motor Wheel lofts! It was very quiet, clean and excellent location just a short walk to downtown! Beautiful industrial windows with high quality appliances. Sheila and Harry were both excellent to work with, speedy to respond to any questions and both take pride in this beautiful building. Maintenance team was also phenomenal to work with if and when there was ever a need. I would 100% recommend this place and would have stayed had I not relocated for work! You most certainly get what you pay for in my opinion!
I Travel for work and spend 1-2 yrs in many cities across the US. I generally stay in higher end apartments. In Lansing MI this is the best place available. The building is almost sound proof, all the apartments are modern, comfortable and energy efficient. The building and grounds are well maintained. Indoor heated parking is 100% worth it in MI winter! The building owners are very accommodating and on top of everything. My stay here was awesome and I couldn't be happier!!
This place was not worth the money. No amenities besides a very small subpar gym. The management is very poor and is extremely rude. You cannot break your lease. When I had to leave they made me pay a $475 remarketing fee and I had to continue to pay rent until they were able to lease my apt.. which they never did until the actual end of my lease. In fact, I'm not even sure they showed my apt because I had someone check on it in May months after I moved and there was a package sitting there from December. The communication with management was also poor, I was told to communicate by email and when I did I never received responses or the response came weeks later. Also when I discussed with the owner what would happen if I left without paying rent anymore he threatened they would take me to court and they "always win." I also questioned why there were none of my type of apt listed on their website as available (thinking theyd leased it without telling me) and he told me not to pay attention to the website.... Dont waste your time or money living at Motor Wheel Lofts.
Property Manager at Motor Wheel Lofts, Responded To This Review
This tenant lived in the building for 3 years, resigning a lease every year, so it couldn't have been too bad:) We are very sorry we were not able to find a new renter. Covid has come with its challenges and moving in the middle of covid let alone in winter isn't easy for anyone. We tried to release the obligations the best we could. And yes, we knew this person had a box in the unit and contacted the carrier to reach out, we try to maintain privacy which is why we contact the carrier. Here is what we do expect...that when you sign a lease you uphold your commitments. We are forthright about the process involved if you do not pay rent on a signed agreement. We reserve the space and commit to you as well. We are a small business and we've built Motor Wheel Lofts ourselves, we are not a big rental agency. Concerning the gym while not a club it does include several newer treadmills, ellipticals, and weight machines, it's cleaned daily, we maintain it so everything works and there are TVs. It's enough to get you through a workout when you don't want to go to a big club or helpful to tenant wanting to get in something quick and/or close by. Again, we are very sorry we aren't able to help everyone out but we do care, this is our place we've built and we care about our residents more than they will ever know.
the building itself is beautiful, but it's in a terrible neighborhood and the management is a nightmare to deal with. I've been over charged rent 2 times in the past 10 months and they won't return the money, only charge it to my account as a credit. they wont answer phone calls and emails take days
I had a wonderful experience living at Motor Wheel Lofts! All of the staff were very friendly, consistently around and attentive to any needs I had. Maintenance was prompt, professional and easy to request services from. The property manager is very involved and genuinely concerned about the experience and satisfaction of the residents. The building and grounds are kept super clean, with beautiful landscaping and flowers. The loft itself was beautifully designed and very roomy and open, with a ton of floor space, huge windows with an amazing view of downtown Lansing and high ceilings. I would highly recommend living here if you are looking to move to the Lansing area!
I've been a tenant with MWL since 2009 and the reasons are simple. First, the living space, surrounding structures and amenities are unique, first class, and unmatched by other apartment complexes in Lansing. Second, the maintenance staff is prompt, kind and very competent. Finally, Harry and his staff (Steve and Addison} have been fair and attentive to my needs throughout my tenancy. They are friendly, kind and treat their tenants with respect. I've made many referrals to MWL and encourage any prospective tenant to take a look at what MWL has to offer!!! frank o'donnell
I was a resident at Motor Wheel Lofts for well over a year and loved the experience here. I stayed on the first floor and had a very nice view of downtown Lansing. The underground garage was very clutch in the winter time, I never had to shuffle snow off of my vehicle. I really had no issues and was even given a free Roomba when the lofts upgraded their Roombas in the hallway. I moved from another state and Addison gave me a tour via iphone Facetime, which was very helpful. Id recommend this place to anyone, especially if you are young, straight out of college.
Last week I was on the hunt again for a new apartment, but was not completely set on where I wanted to live. A friend of mine recommended calling Motor Wheel Lofts for a tour, so I did just that. Adison, who helps with the leasing and management of the property, gave me a tour of multiple apartments/condos as well as all of the facilities on the premise. Not only was I thoroughly impressed with the professionalism and knowledge that Adison had, but I was blown away by how clean and organized everything was. There is heated underground parking that is only accessible with a key card (very nice feature). Also, they have a full indoor basketball court within only a few hundred feet from the Motor Wheel Loft building. After touring I decided that this is where I wanted to live so i signed a lease and moved in the very same day! Now I have lived here for a week and couldn't be happier. The sense of community here is far greater than any prior experience I have had and I recommend living here. Motor Wheel Lofts has been a sensational experience and Adison was most helpful throughout the entire process.
My loft is located on the second floor and I couldn't be happier. It has large windows in the living room, a nice dark bedroom, high ceilings, a large walk in a closet, and beautiful finishes.
