Less than twenty miles west of Washington on Interstate 66, Fairfax is a small suburban community that has become quite popular with DC-area commuters seeking a quiet home environment. Families love the quaint atmosphere, excellent public schools, and friendly neighbors. Local community festivals celebrating everything from Irish heritage to the arts to chocolate are always popular with the locals, and the city’s public parks, playgrounds, and walkable downtown district give folks ample opportunities to spend time outdoors.
The student body of neighboring George Mason University is actually larger than the entire population of Fairfax, and many students, faculty, and staff members call the city home—consequently, locals enjoy access to the attractions and resources of the campus as well as a unique blend of amenities catering to the college.

Property Ratings at Oakton Park Apartments
Oakton Park Apartments and their parent company, Dreyfuss Management, have a serious communication problem that should be taken into consideration before you apply to live here. I started emailing Oakton Park on April 25th about issues with cigarette smoke from new downstairs neighbors. I emailed again on April 29th, May 9th, May 10th, May 11th, May 16th, and May 24th before finally receiving a response on May 25th about the issue claiming internet outage issues after almost a full month of sending emails. I emailed again on May 25th and June 24th after an aggressive incident from neighbors, and received a response on June 25th. I’ve then emailed August 1st, August 2nd, August 20th, and September 6th about the continuing issue. We began also having issues with marijuana odors in our apartment and continued to email their staff on October 31st, November 2nd twice, November 7th, November 10th , November 12th. I received a response on November 12th after stating I was not satisfied with their communication. After still having issues I emailed again November 17th and November 24th and received no response to those communications. Notices about changes aren't timely - we received a notice telling us the AC was turning off and the heat was turning on. It is dated October 19th but this notice wasn’t posted until October 22nd which is after the change had already gone into effect. This is after air conditioning had been turned off several days before with no notice to tenants. However, turning off the air conditioning doesn’t turn off the overall system, so I came home after work to an incredibly warm apartment due to it still being turned on and blowing air warmer than outside into the apartment. Staff communication isn’t the only issue here. Many residents of this complex don’t care about community living or their surroundings. Near the end of our lease the exit sign in our stairwell was badly damaged. That sat on that stairwell for days before someone even picked up the mess and was unrepaired for a long time. It’s not uncommon to find cigarette butts on the ground, broken railings, and trash on the ground. We have neighbors around our building who let their dog out unsupervised and unleashed constantly to relieve itself, who throw whole pieces of bread all around for wildlife, and who play music loud enough regularly to be heard buildings away. It’s not all residents, there are plenty of pleasant folks but it’s enough to affect living here.
Overall management is the worst they never corporate Even the head office management they don't understand what they are doing, my advice don't rent with them. Local office management are rude and mean every other day I see police in the area and they never mail or email us to let us know what is going on so we can watch and keep or families save. Trash is everywhere a lot of times around the trash area.
Property Manager at Oakton Park Apartments, Responded To This Review
While we appreciate all resident feedback we receive, we're very disappointed to read such a negative portrayal of our team. We care tremendously about the comfort and satisfaction of our residents, and we do our best to stay in clear communication about events in the neighborhood as they arise. However, some matters must be addressed in a timely manner and are of a sensitive nature, so we sometimes are not able to send notifications for certain occurrences. We would be happy to address the remainder of your concerns in person, so feel free to stop by the office at your earliest convenience. Thank you.
This apartment complex has paper thin walls and windows. You can hear kids and adults alike (mainly kids) running up and down the hallways and stairs at anytime of day or night and if you get a unit near the playground KISS YOUR SUMMER SLEEP SCHEDULE GOOD-BYE. Kids play out there from 7am till well after dark with NO parental supervision and are allowed to scream and yell and kick their soccer balls into your window as they please. We fied multiple complaints with the leasing office but they basically said "sorry tell them to be quieter." They are so lazy and incompetent that they are completely unwilling to do anything about the kids. This past summer it was so bad that there were 6-7 kids no older than 8 outside without parents for so long one went missing. Following that some playground rules were posted but ARE NOT ENFORCED AT ALL. I have called CPS twice now because of these kids being left alone unsupervised. The apartment itself is pretty decent. I would like it a lot more if they didn't shut off the air on the last day of August and don't turn the air on until June. On top of that about once a month either your water or electricity gets shut off for "repairs" for entire days. Honestly find somewhere else to live. This place is by no means worth the money.
The staff were very good to me, i moved into one apartment, didnt like it, and they moved me to another the next day. They were very helpful and even when I gave my notice they were understanding of my reasons. The apartments are spacious and well cared for. I loved the combined washer/dryer. Parking is OK but if you want to have guests they will not find a spare guest spot ever. I moved out because of noise. Its basically a family complex, there are a lot of kids, the apartment doors slam shut really hard. So i could never use my living room because of the kids running in and out the apartments and the building shaking each time. The air conditioning in my apartment was very loud and my bedroom would vibrate. Sadly this was because the people below me had it on maximum running 24 hours a day. Another apartment may not have these problems, maybe i was just unlucky. I would have stayed if wasnt for the noise.
The value in these apartments are: 1) rent price, and 2) all utilities (other than cable and internet) being included. That is where it ends for me. I find the staff to be unprofessional and unresponsive to maintenance requests. Moreover, I find the atmosphere of the apartment complex to be low-brow and unflattering with a large number of young children often left to gallivant about stairwells and courtyards without parental supervision. Other disappointments include the lack of a fitness center, tenants not being communicated with via email, and there being no online portal for paying rent. If you are looking for an inexpensive place to live, then this apartment complex may be for you. If you are looking for an apartment that you enjoy living at, then based on my experiences, you might be best served to consider other options.
If you're looking for a quiet place , don't move here there are screaming kids everywhere and you can't even enjoy the pool with all the kids . Second , office staff are rude. Location is ok because it's literally right next to I 66. The washer and dryers here in the laundry room and pretty expensive . Maintenance is ok .
