Long School, a hilly, attractive neighborhood in northeastern Omaha, features an unusual name and a fascinating history. The first settler to arrive, Eben Knapp Long, came here to work on the Union Pacific Railroad in 1868. He served on Omaha's school board for 14 years, which was why a school built in 1893 along Franklin Street was named in his honor. Long School was designed by renowned architect John Latenser, Sr. It featured eight classrooms for students kindergarten through eighth grade. The school was the major attraction to the area, hosting events in addition to regular school activities. Eventually, the neighborhood around the school adopted its name. Long School was closed and demolished in the 1980s.
Today, Long School is working hard to preserve its history while developing as a modern neighborhood. Historic locations include the Charles B. Washington House, built in 1905, and St. Benedict School, built in 1928.
