When it was founded in 1902, Fort Hays State University (then known as the Western Branch of Kansas State Normal School) was located on the site of a former frontier outpost known as Fort Hays. The fort operated from 1865 until 1889. In 1904, the campus shifted to its current location, which still includes part of the former fort. Today, Fort Hays State University is one of the fastest-growing universities in Kansas. The picturesque campus covers 200 acres with Big Creek winding through campus.
