Located in central Topeka, Washburn University has one of the more unusual mascots -- they're known as the Ichabods, in honor of Ichabod Washburn, an early benefactor. Washburn University was established in 1865 as Lincoln College, but was renamed in 1868 in honor of Washburn. The university is best known for its School of Law, ranked one of the best in the United States. Graduates include Senator Bob Dole and television news anchor and journalist Bill Kurtis. Washburn University is bordered by SW 17th Street, Washburn Avenue, SW 21st Street, and MacVicar Avenue. Residential neighborhoods that surround the campus include single-family homes and apartment communities. A shopping district with a variety of stores and restaurants is located along SW 17th Street, near the intersection with Washburn Avenue. A few minutes south of campus, Big Shunga Park provides hiking trails, a bike path, and open green space.
