When Kentucky State University opened in 1886, it had three teachers and 55 students. Today, this historic university features a 882-acre campus and more than 2,000 students. Of the 43 new buildings created in the past 30 years, the campus includes an agricultural research farm (311 acres) and an environmental education center (306 acres). The university is one of just 107 HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) in the country.
Located in Frankfort, KSU is located off I-64 between Louisville and Lexington. The campus is located off Main Street near Langford Avenue. The capital city of Frankfort offers a great location and a rich history. The city was established in 1786 and was named for Stephen Frank, a settler who worked on one of the Kentucky River's many fords. In 1780, Frank was killed during a skirmish with Native Americans; after the incident, the other settlers referred to the area as "Frank's Ford." Over time, the name morphed into Frankfort.
Today, historic Downtown Frankfort is picture-perfect, with brightly-painted historic architecture, brick-paved walkways, period lighting, and sidewalk cafes. The city is home to several terrific destinations, including the Kentucky Military History Museum, the Old State Capitol Building, and Liberty Hall Historic Site. Fort Hill, part of the Capital City Museum, is a large, historic park along the river that once served as a Civil War battleground. The park contains two Civil War forts, the Sullivan House, hiking trails, and picnic areas.
