Established more than two decades before South Dakota became a state, the University of South Dakota is the state's oldest university. It dates back to 1862, when it was established as the University at Vermillion by the Legislature of the Dakota Territory. In 1883, the university move to Old Main and had a total enrollment of 69 students. Today, Old Main is one of the university's four buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
