A vibrant gem in the heart of the prairie, Des Moines is named for the river that snakes through the city. This is Iowa's capital (and the county seat of Polk County), and it is filled with things to do. From concerts at the historic Salisbury House to the collections at Des Moines Art Center, and from the 81 miles of hiking and biking trails to the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens, Des Moines offers so much that it was named one of the top 10 cities in which to live by US News.
Home to such companies as Meredith Corporation, Wells Fargo, Voya Financial, and Principal Financial Group, Des Moines is considered one of the nation's wealthiest cities. But you'll also have fun after moving to your Des Moines apartment -- the city offers amazing shops and restaurants in East Village, the nearby Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, the family-friendly Adventureland Park, and the fascinating Living History Farms.

Property Ratings at Old Main & Drake Apartments
Old Main Apartments are located in perfect area. Can get anywhere in the metro within 15 minutes. Management is great and Pierce is always available and willing to answer and questions and help with any issues. The pool is also a great bonus for the summer time.
Pierce is an excellent and easy going property manager. He makes every step in the renting process simple and easy going. Any question or concern to be had was handled in a timely and respectable manner. Any maintenance request was handled quickly and efficiently by the head maintenance staff, Sam. He is thorough and knows what needs to be done. All in all a great place to rent. 5 stars.
I had few issues while renting for 2 years through Old Main (lived in Drake Court). The biggest issue came in moving out of the apartment. We were told we only had the option to pay to get the carpets cleaned and provide them with documentation that it was done by a professional. We opted to have them clean the carpets to save us one step as it would cost about the same as having a professional come in and do it. When we received our deposit back, we were charged $75 for the apartment to be cleaned on top of the $85 charged for the carpet cleaning. We were not told that they would charge to clean the apartment after I spent 2 days cleaning the apartment top to bottom. Kathryn (the landlord) was very deceitful and rude when I called to ask why we were charged, and could not provide me with any documentation that the apartment had actually been cleaned. I feel cheated and scammed.
Property Manager at Old Main & Drake Apartments, Responded To This Review
My lease paperwork states we will be charged for anything above normal wear and tear. We signed off on it when we moved in and were also given a move out procedure list which states the same thing. I have many friends at this property and we all received the same thing upon move in and move out. We were informed many times by Kathryn of the procedure and she is in no way deceitful or rude. She treats others as she is treated by them. We had no issues living within her community and received all documentation we asked for to include an invoice for a damaged charge upon our move out. Great community and professional staff!!!
Old Main houses a lot of students. It is a 5 minute walk from Drake's campus. Across the street, there are a host of restaurants and fast food, including Fernando's and Jimmy Johns and the staple Mars Cafe. Also around the area is the police station, post office and a bank. A church can be heard in the distance playing bells on the hour and many ambulances, firetrucks, and police cars can be heard flying by. Don't go any further East, you are just asking for trouble. The parking and grounds are fenced in. The four buildings surround a pool and patio with grills and picnic tables. If you are on the street you get a lovely view of a 10 foot brick wall. Apartments facing the pool have a patio or balcony. The apartments have hotel style air conditioning and heat. Plenty of storage. Each floor shares one coin operated washing machine and dryer, which often have clothes in them for several hours. Cable and Internet included. Large bedrooms. Lots of bugs and some mice. I have an oven from the 70s, but a new refrigerator and dishwasher. The drains clog often. The walls and ceilings do not leave neighbors actions to the imagination. The maintenence man and landlord are usually available quickly, nights and weekends you are on your own. The area is patrolled by arrogant security who never get out of their car, except to kick people out of the pool before it is scheduled to close. All in all the place is fine if you are a student who wants to be close to campus.
