Nestled next to Downtown Des Moines, Sherman Hill is the city’s oldest neighborhood and is known for its gorgeous Victorian architecture and close-knit community. This historic district has several stores and restaurants, but Sherman Hill is best known for housing Hoyt Sherman Place, a 19th-century art gallery and performing arts theater. Friendly neighbors and city ordinances also contribute to the neighborhood's vibrancy. Maintaining a quaint charm of simpler times, neighbors here are tight-knit, attending community events like Halloween on the Hill throughout the year. While searching for your new home, you’ll find old-fashioned houses along with modern apartments for every budget from affordable to upscale. Sherman Hill also boasts a stellar location. Proximity to Downtown Des Moines and the East Village attracts professionals and nightlife lovers to plant their roots in this historic community.

Property Ratings at Pleasant Court
The location of these apartments is wonderful. You won't find a better price on apartments in this area for what you get. You're close enough that you can walk downtown. The apartments are good sized and I've had no issues as far as appliances or utilities go. The landlord lives in the complex which is convenient if you have any issues. My apartment was clean when I moved in and someone cleans the common areas on a regular basis. My neighbors have all been very quiet. Laundry is coin-op. My biggest issue is there seems to be a total lack of building security. I've had packages stolen, found homeless people in both the stairwell and (what is supposed to be locked!) laundry area of the building. I feel sympathy for them but I do not pay rent so that I can live in a homeless shelter.
We have lived at pleasant court for over 4 years and found the experience total enjoyable. The landlord Dan is very laid back and always available if you needed help. Our apartment was a large two bedroom and you would be hard pressed for find a better price. The neighborhood is minutes from downtown and yet quite, safe & offers lots of green space.
I have now lived at Pleasant Court Apartments for a little over a year now and I can honestly say I'd be hard-pressed to find somewhere else in Des Moines where I would be happier. The Sherman Hill neighborhood is a beautiful place to live with historic homes and a great coffee shop and gourmet grocery store within walking distance of the apartment. You can avoid the daily hustle and bustle of downtown life, by living right on the edge such that you can easily walk or bike to many of Des Moines' downtown attractions. It truly is the best of both worlds. While my one bedroom apartment isn't huge, the price of rent and fact that I have so much green space outside (even a community garden!) more than makes up for it. The kitchen in particular is small, but even an avid cook like me has found it to suit my needs reasonably well. Dan, the landlord is friendly and responds quickly to respond to residents if a problem arises. If you are looking for a place to live in Des Moines, or more specifically in Sherman Hill, I would definitely recommend Pleasant Court as a reasonably priced, well kept apartment in a superb location!
The apartments are spacious, the neighborhood is quite and historical. You dont have a choice in the service providers for tv or internet however after you get everything set up every one is very helpful.
