A vibrant gem in the heart of the prairie, Des Moines is named for the river that snakes through the city. This is Iowa's capital (and the county seat of Polk County), and it is filled with things to do. From concerts at the historic Salisbury House to the collections at Des Moines Art Center, and from the 81 miles of hiking and biking trails to the Greater Des Moines Botanical Gardens, Des Moines offers so much that it was named one of the top 10 cities in which to live by US News.
Home to such companies as Meredith Corporation, Wells Fargo, Voya Financial, and Principal Financial Group, Des Moines is considered one of the nation's wealthiest cities. But you'll also have fun after moving to your Des Moines apartment -- the city offers amazing shops and restaurants in East Village, the nearby Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino, the family-friendly Adventureland Park, and the fascinating Living History Farms.

Property Ratings at Prairie Woods Apartments
Pairewoods apt are a great place to live... Very kind people... They took my house insurance as a monthly payment until I get my home back... When something breaks there in to of it, usually there the same day to repair what is broken... They spray every 3 months for bugs although haven't seen any, there very prompt in everything they do... It has been a very quiet place to live for me... Thank you pairewoods for all you have done for me... I always recommend pairewoods to everyone that I see that is looking for a good place to live...
I've been a long time resident and I think this is a great place to live. The staff are very friendly and most know me by face and name. Buildings and grounds are kept up and KEPT CLEAN. Maintenance issues are addressed promptly and always to my satisfaction. The complex is steadily working to improve facilities and renovate as time and money allow. Management is always there and helpful but not overly intrusive. My appliances are maintained and repaired quickly if needed. Driveways and parking lots are cleared of snow in a timely manner. An effort is made to landscape the property to make it attractive. There is a reason I have lived he for many years and that's because I would have trouble finding better living quarters for the price and satisfaction.
I’ve lived in these complexes twice. The first time back 2013 and I had little issues. Its why I moved back here. Big mistake! This time it has been nothing but issues. Very thin walls you can constantly hear the noise going on in the hallways, doors slamming and constant smell of cigarette smoke. My apartment literally shakes because of my neighbors! I get you’ll have apartment noise but my apartment shouldn’t shake everyday and night because of my neighbors or their kids. I can hear my neighbors across the hall from me, next to me, the people above me are always yelling out the windows to each other and my down stairs neighbors like to scream and yell at each other slam their doors and cupboards. I was told before signing the lease it was a very quiet building because a staff member lives here. I have the option to work from home but I can’t because of the noise here, it’s that bad people on the phone can hear it. So I asked about transferring to a different unit since I had just paid moving in. It would be $250 fee plus another deposit and I would be forfeiting the deposit I just paid! What really? Then to get out of the lease it was going be close to $2400 and a 60 day notice. Then this very morning my car was towed for parking lot “maintenance.” They painted lines that’s it. I NEVER received any notice on my door and of course they aren't going to reimburse me the $120 it took to get the car out of impound. They said they tried to contact me, I received no call because THEY had the wrong number. (But yet they called me back any other time?) oh but forgive me I accidentally slept through them knocking on my door (not a legal notice in Iowa FYI) Oh well it’s your problem is what I was told. My air conditioner went out in August and it took me threatening to get my own in order for them to replace it. Which they replaced it with a rehabbed unit they sprays dust and gunk all over my living room floor. My tub which I was told was new is peeling and I already put in an order and they did nothing when they came. Too little to late now, as soon as I find some place else I’m out. I don’t deal with shady rental companies this is supposed to be someone’s home! I’ve never lived anywhere where my car was towed or where my whole places shakes daily! My personally owned property was taken from my home that I am paying for! Do NOT rent from here.
First off, you can park your car in front of the building at no extra charge. However, the oversized speed bumps in the parking lot will eventually mean a repair bill for your car. Heat and water are included in your rent, although they don't always arrive in the shower at the same time. In other words, some mornings you can wake up to a warm shower and other mornings the cold shower will wake you up! But maintenance does their best to keep everything working. They have promptly made any needed repairs. Just remember to pay your rent on time, as the office staff do their best to collect past due rent. There is a washer and dryer on each floor, but you have to buy a special card to use the machines. You load money on the card using a machine inside the fitness center door. Debit or credit Visa or MasterCard only for the machine; it doesn't take cash or American Express.
When renting with these apartments, make sure you read through everything and notify them on time when you’re going to vacate. Otherwise they will make you pay for an extra month of rent while you’re not even living in the apt. Also the SOME of the office staff are extremely rude. Also make sure to check your apartment for mold. I became extremely sick after moving in here. Price is good but the pictures they show you on apartments.com and on the tour are not what you actually get.
Lived here for seven years. Always paid the bills on time, respected the neighbors, followed their rules perfectly. I didn't even complain about how they increased the rent every 6 months without updating the place at all. What did I get in return? A notice they are ending the lease and I have 5 weeks to find a new place and move out. After calling asking for a reason they are doing it so suddenly (I am now facing homelessness in the middle of February) all I got in reply was "we don't need a reason to tell you". : -COCKROACHES: if you do not like bugs do NOT live here. Our place is clean and they "spray" for the bugs every month but somehow they still are everywhere. One crawled into my soda can when I wasn't looking. - BED BUGS: one of our neighbors brought bed bugs into the complex we are inside and they spread to our apartment. It took MONTHS for the office to actually get an exterminator to deal with them. We told the office multiple times and had to continue to badger them until they helped (meanwhile I am sure they spread to more apartments and I feel terrible) -COLD: The windows here are terrible when it comes to containing the heat in winter. We literally have solid ice and snow built up on our windows, that's how little the windows keep the place warm. -STRANGERS: Be sure to lock your doors always. We have had several strange people just open our door, and some have even walked inside when we have no idea who they are. I am not sure if this is because maybe they were on drugs, or just very drunk. But strange men who come waltzing in when you're alone is quite scary. -FALSE BILLS: one person I know who currently lives there didn't have credit built up. What they didn't know, is the apartment charges you CRAZY fees for if you have no credit that they don't mention until after you get the place. They doubled their rent for the first month and the deposit and they lost all their savings. They're great at not mentioning hidden fee's until you're already facing them.
This place is god awful. It has bugs, there’s never any parking, and if you get home after 10pm there is no hot water. The company is shady and traps you into a higher rate (even if you signed a lease) and the office people won’t work with you on anything. Do not live here.
I've lived here at Prairie Woods Apartments for 12 years. I am very happy living here. The office and maintenance are quick to help me whenever I need something. My view of the grounds is great especially at night when the sun sets! I recommend Prairie Woods Apartments for your home too!
I've been living at Prairie Woods Apartments so almost a year now, and I LOVE IT. Every time I have called maintenance, which hasn't been a lot, but they are always come in a hurry and fix whatever problem I've had. And the ladies that work in the office are absolutely wonderful! They have worked with me so many times when I've had issues with rent. Apartment hallways are always clean! I would live here for the rest of my life and be happy! -Makayla Mcneeley
I've have been living herefor13years. The staff is very friendly an so is maintenance. I enjoy living here very much.
The neighborhood and grounds aren't great, had my windshield broken after my first couple months of living here, no cameras in the lots or buildings. A friend would routinely use his credit card to open the security doors and get into the building. Hallways frequently smell like weed and you can hear people coming and going, I lived on the top floor but with friends on the ground floor of a different building I can say you hear quite a bit above as well Maintenance guys are nice and fast to respond, I just wish I didn't have to call them as often as I did. Office staff on the other hand have been an ongoing source of frustration. My truck was almost towed on two different occasions even though I had been living there for over a year, while other cars in the lot that didn't move for months at a time went unnoticed. No help from management, I had to leave it somewhere else when I left town out of fear of it not being there when I got back. They stopped accepting packages earlier this year so you're out of luck if you want things shipped to you. My lease has been up for nearly a year, I've only stayed because I was planning to relocate closer to work and waiting for a place to open up. When I went to give my 30 days notice as required I was told that because I did not give a full calendar months notice I would be required to pay rent for the entire month of December even though I will be moving into my new place on December 1st, and my deposit won't be returned to me until January. This was all according to a form that was part of my move in, which I did not receive a copy of, nearly two years ago. Again, no help from management, instead assuming that I had lost over half of my lease. I know this is part of renting to a generally more shifty crowd of people, but you would hope that as someone that has quietly paid their rent on time for two years that I would at least get a reasonable attempt to meet me halfway and work out a solution.
We've lived here in Prairie Woods Apartments for approximately 9 mo. We are extremely pleased with office, maintenance and grounds personnel. They are courteous, efficient, thorough and quick to respond to our requests.
I moved from a house to an apartments about a year ago. My kitchen is great I have tons of cabinets and my rent is super low for the size of my apartment. My kids are in love with the pools and the huge playground and basketball court. I enjoy the fitness center which has save me lots of money as I do not need to pay for a gym. I defiantly recommend Prairie Woods and look forward to living here for many more years.
Horrible management, tried to call higher management multiple times and got sent right back to the office.. rude staff.. Air conditioning only cooled the living room. extremely loud neighbors, the walls are like paper. there is never anywhere to park. maintenance is crazy slow, if they show up at all.. Seriously DO NOT LIVE HERE. SO OVERPRICED for what you receive.
STAY AWAY FROM THESE APARTMENTS--VERY POOR MANGEMENT. While I lived there, there was 2 episodes where 5-6 policy cars there taking handcupped person where removed from my building alone. Front door into the apartments is to be locked as a secure building, but these were always broken. Washer and dryers always broken and not working. Had 2 episodes there some one was trying to break in to my apartment while I lived there. I was attacked twice. Gun shots hear at times. During the winter the snow is not scooped or the snow in parking area not scooped. Internet does not work in about 3/4 of the apartments. Exercise room always locked and can not get into. Only open 8 AM to 5PM. Management staff only there to get a pay check and not to help residents. I could not awit to get out of there as soon as my lease was up.
I currently live here and i started in the summer. The apartment is not small but then again its just me summer: hot inside and out. The AC unit only cools the livingroom regardless of what they say. Small kitchen in my 2 bd room. Im on 1st floor its very very very very noisey. I do t complain to office im not like that. THERE IS NOT I REPEAT NOT ENOUGH PARKING WINTER. I have been without heat for most of winter. My heat went out 6 different times and the office doesnt want to help. They say we will fix it. Its currently on at the moment heat supposed to be hot. Its -7 outside and im freezing i have 3 pants on i have 3 coats and hat on but yet my heat works?? Ill never suggest this place to anyone. It gets the job done.. better than nothing.
My wife and I moved here awhile ago. The place is very basic and appliances are old. Isn't too bad just old fashioned. The horrible thing is that the place has roaches. Its been reported to management numberois times and they have only sprayed twice since we've lived here. Its disgusting to have to keep on lookout to make sure there aren't bugs.
I'm from Minnesota and waiting to move to Iowa. Was shocked by how good of an offer these apartments are and how well maintained they are. The customer service was wonderful. Place is well taken care of, greats offers here too!!!! Very very pleased
