West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at Preserve at Essex Farms
After countless times of contacting them about returning our deposit, I was told that they had sent it to an old address and we would have to wait another 30 days for them to reissue another one. I have already waited over 30 days to get it back only to find out they sent it to an old address. Even after I had verbally and by email told them of an updated address. Disorganized place can't imagine how they handle the residents issues. Glad we didn't move there.

I had such a great experience living here and I HIGHLY recommend it! The community is gorgeous, I have always felt safe even at night, and it's very quiet and peaceful (I've never heard the traffic from the parkway). The people who live here are very friendly and respectful of their neighbors. The apartments themselves are spacious and sunny with lots of windows. There's also lots of storage space in the closets which I loved. All of the appliances are great too -- I lived here almost 2 years and never had a problem. Once or twice I had to order maintenance for smaller things like lightbulbs, and they were fantastic! The maintenance team is so nice and very responsive to all of your needs. Last but not least, the management team really cares about you and goes out of their way to make the complex a community (especially Trisha!). They host fun community events like bingo (with prizes), pumpkin carving/painting, and easter egg hunts, just to name a few! If you're a foodie, they also bring in delicious food trucks and the office gives out chocolate for national chocolate day, pie for national pie day, etc. Management is always looking to hear from residents about what events they'd like to see, and they make it happen. The leasing process is very easy, as well as the moving out process (I needed to relocate to a different city for work -- otherwise I would've loved to keep living here). I would rate even higher than 5 stars if I could. I highly recommend the Preserve at Essex Farms!
Great place to call home. The apartments are spacious, up to date with a washer & dryer in the apartments. The buildings are nice with your own 1st floor entry even if your in a 2nd floor apartment, not the breezeway style entry. Landscaping looks great & maintained weekly. The office staff is friendly & made my transition smooth. Rich & his maintenance guys are top notch, if I had any issues they fixed them right away. The grounds are kept clean as well. I believe top customer service is what keeps a resident & this maintenance crew does that. Car wash is a great perk but if I had one complaint it would be the car wash was broke down twice but it was from other residents not taking care of things. I would rent at preserve again if I was ever going to need an apartment but now that I'm a 1st time home buyer I plan on staying in a house. Highly recommend preserve to anyone looking for an apartment in the west Ashley area. 5 Stars!
The Preserve at Essex Farms is great in so many ways. I was given a tour of the apartments in April of 2019. My initial reaction was that the rent would be out of my price range for what I was shown. I assumed I would have to politely decline to put in an application for due to the upscale look of the complex. I was shocked to find out how affordable rent would be. The landscaping is immaculate and the apartments are modern and elegant. It is smaller than other apartment complexes, but that is something that I love. It is a welcoming and quiet community to live in. The pool and clubhouse are one of my favorites to enjoy in the summertime. This is by far the best complex I have ever lived in and I will without a doubt be signing another lease when it comes time. I'm happy to call The Preserve at Essex Farms my home.
Fleas everywhere. Take your dog outside to pee, come back in and he has 10 fleas on him. Rinse and repeat, fleas everywhere. Front desk Staff is terrible, rude, and overall unhelpful only worried about making money off extra hidden fees added left and right. What about safety? The place has car thieves roaming nightly breaking into people’s cars. The police are called out there almost every other night looking for these thieves and bringing k9 dogs to search for the people. Generally a unsafe area for thieves. But they never find the thieves because they are a organized ring of 4 or 5 males that roam at night and can easily run away into the woods to surrounding apartment complexes unseen. What about maintanence? The maintanece manager is a rude, aggressive, and confronting man. He will get in your face and threaten to add extra fees for anything he sees wrong or if you leave your trash bins outside. The hidden fees, fees for leaving trash at the compactor, fees for walking your dog, fees for keys, fees for the gate, fees for normal cost upkeep. Fees, fees, fees. Ended up owing $600 on cleaning fees and trash fees when I moved out after owing NOTHING in back rent. All of these reviews on here are fake by the employees of management. Avoid this place like the plague. I am giving honest, and true feedback on my experience living here. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE!!! OVERPRICED AND NOT NICE!

I love living here! You cannot find a better apt complex & the rent is very reasonable. Best office staff around! Always helpful & caring. Maintenance staff responds quickly & they are very professional! Beautifully landscaped & welcoming. The Springs is close to the interstate yet nestled in the woods in a quiet gated community. Many clubhouse activities & fun events are offered each month. The pool, fitness center & dog park are great amenities! Whether you’re a college student, retired or work in the Charleston area, you will be happy to call The Springs your home!

Absolutely amazing experience. Travis was our leasing agent, and he could not be more helpful and courteous. As he was walking us around the property, he knew EVERY passing resident by name! These people really take the time to get to know every resident. They also keep their community clean and brand new. AMAZING experience, and I cannot wait to move in come July.
These apartments are brand new and are located just a short commute away from the downtown Charleston area. A 15-20 minute drive will put you right into the heart of Charleston strolling along the charming streets filled with shops and restaurants. The actual location of the apartments in West Ashley is safe and near Walmart, Food Lion, Kohls, Marshalls, several food joints such as O'Charleys, Chik-Fil-A, and so on. The apartment complex itself is serene and relaxing. It is never loud, people are never causing a scene, and everyone is friendly. My bike has been parked right outside my front door for the 3 months that I have lived here and it has never been touched. I feel very protected here. The complex is a gated community. We have a wonderful pool area with plenty of lounge chairs, a grilling station, and an outside sitting area under the roof with comfortable seating and a TV. There is also a 24 fitness center with great equipment and a clubhouse with kind staff and free drinks/snacks for all tenants. The community is beautiful and has trees and sidewalks all throughout. My apartment is a studio and is a great size for just me. I have a great kitchen island/bar area with ample counter space and a lot of cupboards for storage. The bedroom area has its own nook and is perfect for my bed, night stand, and dresser. The bathroom is large with a large mirror and very large shower. There is a walk in closet with shelving and a lot of hanging space. One of the best features is that inside the closet there is a washer and dryer. I love living at Springs at Essex Farms and I hope that you will come take a look and see what comfortable apartment living is like!
