DC-area commuters love Arlington’s Ballston/Virginia Square community for its close proximity to Washington and its relaxed neighborhood atmosphere. The rental market ranges from charming single-family homes on tree-lined suburban streets to high-rise apartments and condos in the thick of Arlington’s urban action, attracting a healthy mix of residents to the area.
While the neighborhood is mostly residential, the area between Fairfax Drive and Wilson Boulevard is packed with office buildings, shops, and restaurants; this is also where you’ll find the popular Wellburn Square Freshfarm Market, a local favorite for fresh produce, as well as the stylish Ballston Common Mall.
Most of the streets in the area are fairly quiet, giving folks the ability to get around on foot or by bicycle. The community provides easy access to Interstate 66, which will get you into DC within minutes; multiple Metro stops in the neighborhood also help make commuting a breeze.

Property Ratings at Richmond Square
My stay here at Richmond square was shadowed by the amount of fees and hidden policies that management has. Any chance they get to make money off you they will, and have terrible customer service throughout the entire process.
Property Manager at Richmond Square, Responded To This Review
Thank you for your review Jacob. I understand your frustration and disappointment. I'm sorry that there might have been some misunderstanding with your lease revision process. Please give us a call at 703-908-0900. We will be more than happy to discuss it with you and clear up any confusion. We look forward to speaking with you!
This review comes from someone who was happy to pay the lease termination fee before moving out. The apartments at Richmond Square are comically uninhabitable, run by an incompetent management team and property management company, Rent Dittmar, who you will only hear from once there is a possibility they lose money. Firstly, every floor but the community lounge is smoker-friendly. This may not be noticeable in an apartment building built in the last 25 years with standard insulation, however Richmond Square has aged very poorly. If you are lucky enough to be living on the same floor as a tenant who smokes, your furniture, clothing, and entire living space will smell of cigarettes. This should not be taken as an excited overreaction - this review comes from someone who is a regular at smoking-friendly bars and has friends who smoke, but someone who will not tolerate living in a smoking lounge. One should also keep in mind the lack of unit insulation also translates to noise pollution - my apartment faced a side street on the building's 18th floor, and street noise woke me up every morning. Secondly, the management team is alarmingly unqualified and apathetic. My attempts to make management and Rent Dittmar aware of this inconvenience were either left ignored or dismissed, up until I gave notice of termination. Requests as simple as asking for a door skirt were met with the standard "there is nothing we can do because this is a smoker-friendly residence" response. Please take note that you will not see this admission on Rent Dittmar advertisements or lease agreements, while competitors such as Avalon advertise smoke-free residences. There are far too many other apartment options in the area within the same price range to consider this place. I would think long and hard before you give money to a company, in a very competitive industry, that shows little regard for their clients.
This apartment building is extremely convenient to the Ballston Metro stop and the Ballston Common Mall. It's an excellent location for the area, and the management company offers great perks: a low parking rate, in-unit washer/dryer, and flat rate utilities. The management is really careful to keep everything in good working order, clean, etc. Finally, the website claims they've soundproofed the walls - compared to every other apartment I've lived in, this definitely seems to be true! My apartment is a multiple bedroom, and we often can't hear each other calling across bedrooms. Richmond Square is a great place for young adults and others looking for convenient living!
I have had a wonderful experience living in Richmond Square. You really can't beat the convenience - you have 3 drycleaners, a tailor, 4 barbershops, 2 convenience stores, a CVS, a grocery store, two dentists' offices, an iHop, and the Metro all within two blocks. Close to Clarendon and Pentagon City as well. The apartment itself is comfortable - fixed fee utilities, dishwasher/washer/dryer in the unit, walk-in closet, AC, in-house gym. Parking is cheap - only an extra $50/month, which is ridiculous for this area. Friendly staff (with the exception of one particular concierge). The drawbacks -- one, the rent. New building, lots of space, but in a very expensive area, especially for not being in the city. Additionally, if you want to live in/near DC, it is quite a trek to places you would really want to be, with only one bus running into the District and long metro rides to any of the hotspots - AdMo, U Street, Eastern Market, monuments. On the weekends, your Uber expenses really add up. Finally, you have to give 60-days notice for move-out, as opposed to the usual 30. Great experience overall. I'm going to miss it.
I have been living at Richmond Square apartments for a year and have had an overall positive experience. You can't ask for better convenience in terms of location. The building is right across the street from the Ballston metro with easy access to Washington DC and the nightlife of Clarendon. We have had some issues with our A/C leaking and damaging our carpet, but the staff were responsive and quick to help fix the problem and repair the damage. Our apartment is roomy and spacious with a great view and great amenities. Overall, I would recommend if you are willing to spend a bit extra for the location and amenities.
I lived at Richmond Square for a year with a roommate in a 2bd/2ba apartment on the 13th floor that had a balcony and GREAT AC/heat. My roommate and I had lived at previous buildings before and enjoyed Richmond Square the best. The price isn't low but it isn't too high as well, it's all about the market at the time. If you're looking to rent, make sure to ask for 13-14 month deals which will bring down the rent. The staff in the building are extremely nice. The manager Marsha was always helpful and very pleasant to work with. You're located in a hot bed of activity, like other happening places you'll have wonderful bars with a few less desirable bars (A-Town, I'm looking at you..). All in all, I'd advise any potential renter to really look into this building. Nice staff, good value, and wonderful neighborhood.
