West of the Appalachian Mountains, Elizabethton is a small rural college town filled with American history. The area is affordable and surrounded by an abundance of lush greenery ideal for outdoor activities. Hike or birdwatch at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park, the first permanent American settlement outside the 13 original colonies. Feed ducklings as you stroll along the Doe River Covered Bridge, the oldest bridge in the state. The bridge serves as a picnic, park, live entertainment, and festival space.
Every year the town gathers for the annual Covered Bridge Celebration in downtown. Vendors sell antiques and handmade crafts, while musicians perform on a stage near the historic bridge. River View is in the perfect location. It feels isolated for that peaceful vibe, but it’s walking distance from shops and restaurants.
On February 27, 2023, I noticed that several small holes, along with one larger hole, had formed on my wall. I thought this was concerning and called the front office. I explained that they popped up overnight and thought I saw bugs or legs inside the hole. Justin and the maintenance man came into my apartment for less than 4 mins and stated that "it was probably just a spider or waterbug." I asked about the smaller holes, and the maintenance man stated that "the spider probably kicked the holes out when it needed to use the bathroom." I am not an exterminator, but I was positive that a spider doesn't eat drywall. The maintenance man then promptly filled in the holes and painted over it like nothing ever happened. Two days later, the holes reappeared larger.I covered the hole with duct tape to make sure that nothing would happen. Later in the day, when I went to check on it there was A TERMITE that was stuck to the tape, like I had suggested two days earlier. I put the bug that was STILL ALIVE in a plastic bag and carried it to the office. Justin was mortified, but the maintenance man asked me why I didn't kill it. I said to provide proof that it wasn't "just a spider." He then gaslighted me by trying to tell me there was probably just a single or dozen termites. He also stated there weren't multiple holes, but just a single. He began to raise his voice and argue that there still weren't termites in the apartment, even after I physically laid a LIVE termite on the man's desk. Justin allowed him to do so without defending a loyal property resident who wants a bug-free home. I asked Justin if an exterminator would come today, and he told me he wasn't sure. I said if they continue to ignore an issue that can cause SERIOUS damage to the property and bodily harm, then to end my lease.I understand that termites aren't preventable, but if an issue is presented, then don't try to sweep it under the rug by painting over it. There are several other issues at this complex, like the resident who almost had her apartment broken into during the middle of the day, which the office did nothing about. It is entirely unprofessional to argue with a resident when there is physical and breathing proof right in front of you. Beware to all future residents as termites SPREAD, reproduce, and start coming out of the walls. I doubt that any normal person would look at someone and try to convince them that a "spider using the bathroom" would cause holes in the wall.
