Property Ratings at Runaway Bay Apartments
Where do I even begin? If I could give it a 0 I would. I would write more but there is a character limit. I can't put how long I've been here for anonymity, but just know it's been a sufficient length of time to see the good, bad, and ugly. The good: - The beach is the best feature, but you can only have one guest per UNIT. - The pool is ok when it's open - There are Grills at the pool and the beach - They have a basketball/tennis court, but it was closed for the majority of the time I've lived here for crime reasons - The gym is open 24/7 just good luck finding anything to disinfect with and several of the machines are broken. - The corner store nearby is phenomenal and has just about everything you might need in a pinch. The bad - Maintenance is the least responsive thing here. - The electrical in these buildings is old. If it's too windy expect your power to flicker or go out completely. Just about every socket is wiggly and the internet ports on the wall are painted over and many are broken. - You're stuck with basically one option for internet services - There is very limited parking unless you want to pay extra MONTHLY. - The unrenovated units are the definition of landlord makeover. Our floor has a dip in it, our bathroom door doesn't latch, our laundry room door doesn't even stay closed, our counter has a huge gap between it and the wall supporting it that they just filled with caulk (which peeled off), and the paint shows every mark. -When we moved in there was pink mold in the bathroom - Way overpriced for what you are (and aren't) getting. - There is no grace period for paying rent. The ugly: - We didn't have heat for months because they took so long to come fix it. - Our AC was out for almost the entire summer not that it is great at keeping it cool to begin with. - The towing company is predatory. They tow for: a pass being slightly obscured, tags being expired, parking in the same spot for more than a week (yes I'm serious), and if you are parked anywhere that isn't a parking spot. Yes you are stuck parking far away and needing to walk. - If the leasing agent tells you that you can do something that goes against the lease make sure you get it in writing + signatures because they do not stick to their word. - OH fun fact: they have bugs (found them in 3 different buildings) despite forcing everyone to get treated every couple of months.
My partner had moved in a couple of months ago. When he moved in the apartment hadn’t really looked like what we toured but it was fine. We figured what we toured would look nicer anyways. However, the one shower didn’t work, the sink leaked and is causing the floor to cave under it, and the bathtub in the other bathroom is also doing the same. When the AC finally went out, a request was put in as an emergency since it was over 80° out. The apartment got hotter than the outside even when we tried getting fans and keeping the blinds closed. We called maintenance multiple times a day with no answer every day for a week. We also left VM with no responses. He could not stay there as it was so hot. It’s been frustrating to say the least especially since no one is doing anything about it. I read reviews maintenance was bad but what makes it worse is you don’t get any sort of response from anyone. Unfortunately they are only open a limited time so we couldn’t go in during works and there’s no maintenance during the weekend.
Staff is rude and inconsiderate, apartment buildings smell disgusting, valet trash pickup is inconsistent, maintenance delays work orders, and when they do “fix” the issue it’s messed up again a couple of weeks later. Oh and the amenities are not just for the tenants apparently there are random people from all over Columbus enjoying the pool, beach, and basketball court when it once was. Car and apartment break ins are frequent.
As a resident since may, I have not had my air conditioner working, and staff will not address and fix it, despite my constant complaints. They won’t communicate with me and refuse to address my concerns. Avoid renting
Very cozy area. Feels like your nestled in a green space oasis. Love the lake. Wonderful office staff.

Thank you for your excellent rating of Runaway Bay. We sincerely appreciate you recognizing the effort we put toward making this community one of the best.
I've needed my sink repaired for over 5 months. I've attempted to call them, left voicemails, left emails, used the stupid app (that no one ever responds to), and talked in person, yet they do not reply to ANY calls/messages and in person they assure you that they will get right on it. 5 MONTHS. And what's even worse is the response is always the same, just take a look. It's copy/pasted explaining that they care about their renters and they want to make it right, just call this number and explain what's going on. In other words, leave a voicemail that you won't hear about and keep paying rent even if you can't use your sink.
Do you like overstated amenities? Do you like copious late fees? Do you like feeling like an inconvenience when you interact with your rental office employees? Do you like maintenance requests that go unaddressed for an annoyingly long time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then have we got the dream apartments for you. I lived here for two years and my opinion is that this is a just-okay place to live; I've lived in worse places. They have some great features, but I am extremely dissatisfied with many aspects that relate to how the place is managed. They will hit you with late fees, and sneak in as many fees as they can when you move out.
I have been increasingly impressed by the kindness and professionalism of both the office and maintenance staff. All have been very welcoming and responsive. The grounds are kept clean and the pool and beach are wonderful amenities. I have greatly enjoyed living here. The staff go out of their way to get to know each tenant and their pets personally. This is truly a special community.

Thank you for taking the time to share with us why you love calling Runaway Bay Apartments home. We appreciate the special shout out of our team members for their great service. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out to us, if you need anything going forward. Thanks again!
You can't beat the price and ammenities but a lot of issues. Careful of the dog park - people constantly have their aggressive dogs in there or leave the gates open. People will take large aggressive dogs into the small dog area. Looks nice but it's not safe. Constantly smelling weed. Constantly cliff jumpers behind my apartment. Constantly garbage laying everywhere. "Private" beach is not enforced enough good luck finding a chair on weekends. Leasing office staff are about useless - complaints do nothing. There is never anyone to monitor any of the ammenities. Moved in and apartment (esp carpet) was FILTHY!!! My feet left black marks in my tub. Vacuumed debris up for weeks. Orange stuff on my bathroom wall. Dryer was broken upon move in.

The apartment, community, amenities and maintenance team are amazing, however the leasing office is a joke. I left 6 messages on their voicemail (good luck getting them to actually pick up), and never received a reply when I had an issue with my carport. Upon trying to re-lease, I’ve had to email and message them 6 times, called twice and stopped in face to face 4 times and still don’t have a lease to sign. I’m not sure what else to do at this point aside from leave. I have a friend trying to move in that has been waiting a month to find out if he has been approved, and they will not answer his calls or emails either. Don’t waste your time if you plan to ever ask for help with anything, even face to face, because it will not be done

Maintenance orders go days before being processed just for the same problems to happen a week later. Cannot wait to move out. Would not recommend renting here.

Cheaper rent advertised than other places but don't worry they include a list of "hidden" monthly fees so it is no bargain. Unit smelled like smoke upon move in. Advertised basketball court is in awful condition, no nets, stupid paneling used for playing surface that has come apart and causes slipping which will lead to injuries. Strict limits for your guests to the pool are a joke. Guest parking is a joke. Will tow your own car without remorse for even one night of not having your permit (was in a car accident and picked up a loaner car while they were closed). Could go on and on and I have only been here for 2 months. Garbage management and organization. Can't wait to be out of my lease. Do not rent here if you have other options
When i first started my lease, the new management was just getting started. The leasing manager was extremely rude, I was promised a specific unit I never got, but she was quickly replaced I have been very pleased with my experience. I’d give Runaway Bay 9.5/10 as far as price, quality, management, amenities, and location go. They are constantly improving and renovating the properties (landscaping, unit renovation, keyless entry into buildings, etc.) Once the initial leasing manager was replaced early on, every encounter I had with the staff has been pleasant. If you want a painless experience while looking at Runaway Bay, ask for Dorothy. She has helped me multiple times, and is always very friendly/eager to assist you. My lease ends soon, and am strongly considering re-signing. Only cons- -Parking Lot speed bumps - large and annoying! -Don’t lose your plastic key fobs, either one is expensive to replace ($50 for some plastic)
We were told all buildings would be locked. Ours was never locked and we live by McKinley. The only time the door was locked, maybe 4 times the whole year, half of those times the door was broken and I had to get maintenance to come let me in. Our building also smells like cat pee. Move in - the cleaners left behind trash that we had to clean up. They "cleaned" the carpets aka the carpets were SOAKING when we moved in. They were so wet we had to put all of our stuff on the counters. A week after move in - "brand new" dishwasher broke. After MULTIPLE REQUESTS THROUGH OUT THE YEAR, they came to fix it....A WEEK BEFORE WE MOVED OUT 2 months after move in - AC broke. They didn't come to fix it until the following spring. YES MONTHS AFTER IT BROKE. They did fix it, yet they were at our apartment, multiple nights in a row, until 11PM ON A WEEK NIGHT. Apparently the leasing didn't know they were staying this late...how do you not know that? May, half way through our lease - After our AC was fixed our water pressure was almost non - existent. We were unable to shower if we were running the dishwasher or the washer. We couldn't even wash our hands after we flushed the toilet. We noticed the pressure difference around Memorial Day weekend. Was it fixed before we moved out in August. NOPE. We put in a maintenance almost once a week to get this fixed and even went into the office multiple times to talk to them in person, and the water pressure wasn't fixed even when we moved out IN AUGUST. DON'T BOTHER CALLING THEM - they won't answer or will they call you back "Security" - they do have a guard, but they just sit on their phone the whole time. I have left the gym to walk back to my apartment and have seen too many times to count, a group of guys drive into the complex and go to play basketball at the court 10 parking spaces from the "security guard". They clearly don't live there and the guard didn't even look up. Kimberly - If you speak to her, I'm sorry. The way I was treated by her was in no way acceptable for a professional or any one honestly. Your job is help your tenants and fix the problems of the complex, not yell at them and make them feel incompetent We turned in out notice that we were not releasing and one the 1st day of August they charged us the whole month because they didn't have record of us moving out, despite telling us they received our HANDWRITTEN LETTER or that they told us someone was moving into our exact unit a week later.
Back in November, I submitted a work order about having cockroaches. The old management company didn't respond. When the place was taken over by new management in December, they responded to the request and took the appropriate steps to remediate the issue. However at this point, the problem had gotten BAD. I had to move everything out of my kitchen and pull all my furniture away from the walls for about two months. The new management company got pest control to come but they made the assumption that I was the one who brought the roaches in and told me that it wasn't that bad when they didn't even look. The conditions were not livable. There was roach poop every where and roaches seen in all rooms. I ended up buying out my lease because I didn't want to deal with arguing with them about the problem. The unit was super run down and not worth was I was paying for it. I'm definitely glad I got out of there. Would not recommend, there are way better options in Grandview.
The new management is the exact same as the old management! Customer service is still last priority! They lied about everything, they told me the last owners shredded everything, but somehow new my past issues. So which is it? The head lady lied to my face about everything in our conversation. They think they don’t have to deal or answer to the previous problems the other owners left behind, if you buy a property or company, you are now responsible for the aftermath. They are trying to act clueless so we don’t give them a headache about the old company. Clearly you’re going to fail just as they did. I would pay someone monthly not to live in this apartment complex. Get everything in writing!
I lived at Runaway Bay for a year and of all the other apartment complexes I've lived at, this one is by far the worst. First off, I have been battling them for over a year for a $400.00 check for referring my stepsister and her fiance to sign a year lease. I have spoken to individuals in the office and at the corporate office where I get tossed between various representatives and no one helps me out. I was later told that due to paying rent late a few times, I did not qualify for the $400.00? There were no terms and conditions mentioned or signed other than successfully having someone sign a year long lease for them. Not only did I not receive my $400.00 but the individual who referred me to live at the complex , whom never paid rent late, was never awarded her $400.00 either. The referral is 100% a scam so do not get fooled into thinking you'll get anything in return. Furthermore, I had a gas leak issue that was not addressed for over two weeks that I had to beg them to handle. There were constantly water leaks from surrounded apartments that would cause groundwater to flood into my apartment. They will lie to your face so don't move here expecting any integrity. There are plenty of decent places that at least honor their agreements (Olentangy Commons, Fox and Hounds, Polaris Crossings, The Quarry across the street from Runaway Bay etc.). You are better off renting from OSU properties on campus instead of this place. I will also be contacting the Columbus City Code Enforcement regarding their gas leak issues that they neglect. Luckily through my family, I am very close with an individual who works there and will follow up regarding the issues at this complex immediately.
No only is it a complete dump but they scam you out of your deposit. The manager, Liz, told me to my face that it doesn't matter what we do to the apartment when we move out, they are still going to eat up the deposit however they can. After moving out, I was informed that ALL last month water bills are sent to collections NO MATTER WHAT. The bill was paid with our deposit and they still charged me a second time! Then I started getting harassed by the collections company for A PAID BILL. Now, it is affecting my credit and I am being charged A THIRD TIME! DO NOT MOVE HERE!!!
Ok so first of all the fact that this has a 4 star rating confirmed what I had heard.. which is that the employees write reviews for this place to make it sound great. I had heard horror stories before I move in here, but shook them off and thought "how bad could it be". Don't do it man, they will tow your car, charge you fees after you have already moved out and will not contact you or let you know. The maintenance is a joke. Oh and the staff is a bunch of con artists who need to be thrown in jail. there are plenty of nice places in cbus so bite the bullet and spend a little more. Just don't give a dime to these scum bags.
I am a current resident, as of August 2017. Positivies: Allow dogs with no breed restrictions, very dog friendly, there are dog bags posted all around the grounds. Allow short term leases. Negatives: They do not repair much, the place was in god awful condition when we moved in, carpets were still soaked from the cleaning they did, neither toilet worked, (this got fixed less than a week later, but more than a day), half the lightbulbs were out, our dryer did not work. Our garage, which we were paying for, was not ready. The outside lights have not been functional since we moved in, it's quite dark outside Staff is not very helpful, and springs requests on you with like 2 days notice. This afternoon, they gave us 48 hours to have satellite dishes, which were installed prior to our arrival moved to the designated areas. Our key fobs to access the business center, pool, and fitness center were only available after I nagged the staff repeatedly. Cabinets are the cheapest quality, walls are thin, the entire building shakes when the outside door slams. The staff, especially the maintenance people, are friendly, but the front office is pretty much useless
We have lived at Runaway Bay for about 9 months now. Within our first week we had to put in work orders for the heat not working, washer leaking, and disposal leaking. Our dishwasher even leaked into the kitchen after the first few uses. Each of these workorders were taken care of within a decent time frame, no more than a couple of business days for each issue. However, 8 days ago our A/C stopped working. At first it was slightly working so we left the system on and put in a work order. As of now it is not working at all. I have called the on call phone and left messages twice and called the main office about 5-6 times now. Four days ago someone told me they would speak with the maintenance supervisor and call me back, no returned call. They were closed the following day and the on call phone goes straight to voicemail. Yesterday I called and was promised by the office manager that the work order was in hand and would be fixed YESTERDAY. Today, the A/C is still not fixed, I have called the office once again and was told the exact same thing as yesterday, we will see if it actually gets fixed. It has been well over 80 in our apartment, very uncomfortable, and our dog has not stopped panting. We have had to purchase fans to keep on our dogs cage, his panting and breathing is becoming a concern. I am anticipating a very large energy bill due to running the system while it was hardly working. Each call to the office has been a short, "oh yeah it will get fixed" with no results. Aside from these issues we have enjoyed our time living here, but are not sure we will continue our lease due to our comfort and the safety of our puppy.
Property Manager at Runaway Bay Apartments, Responded To This Review
Hello, The Runaway Bay maintenance team works diligently everyday to accomplish work orders in a timely fashion. We apologize for your experience. There could be multiple factors why this has possibly happened. Please stop by our office at your earliest convenience to discuss how we can make it right for you. Thank You!
I lived here for two years and planned to renew my lease, but in the last year the community came into new management. They bumped my price from first year to next and when I went in to renew they wanted to quote me for market rates. When I asked if I could negotiate the resident manager said, "You can take it or sign a notice to vacate". So I did. The below reviews are accurate, my building keypad hasn't worked in a year and a half and every time I called about it (there were several occasions of strange people sitting in my hallway) they said they were in the process of fixing all the doors. There are regular car break-ins. The grass is not mowed as regularly as it should be and the trash dumpsters are always overflowing. The maintenance is sub par except for Jared, he is awesome. In two years I have had to have my entire AC system replaced as well as my water heater and the bottom of my tub. The ONLY upside to these apartments is the amenities and location. The pool is new and gets very lively with drinking and music on weekends. There is a lake as well as a dog park and uber trips down town are around $10 one way. That is the only thing that kept me there (and AJ at the front office, she is a sweetheart). If you are going to pay these prices go somewhere worth it. They care more about getting new residents rather than keeping their current ones.
First the good things: balcony with outdoor storage unit, real fireplace, the quarry can be beautiful and fun, decent gym and pool, close to a bike trail, and on the COTA bus line. Now for the bad: this place is dumpy and trashy. It seems to attract loud, careless students and other young people. I've seen hallways literally filled with trash. Hallways look very dumpy and old. The front door's keycode wasn't working for months, and once they got it working someone partially ripped the door off its hinges so it was dangerously hanging there. Our neighbors are sterotypically bad; the ones across the hall constantly smoke weed and play loud music while the people upstairs stomp around at all hours. The apartment itself has many things wrong with it and things are "fixed" in the laziest, most apathetic way possible. Carpet looks old, bathroom faucet is falling apart, there have been leaks from upstairs, door handles are falling off, the dryer hardly works at all. Every inch is painted white, from the walls to ceilings to doorframes. I can see how this place appeals to college students because it can be fun, but you will be surrounded by people who throw trash everywhere and have no consideration for others.
Make sure to ask for AJ in the leasing office... She has been extremely accommodating! We've been living in Runaway Bay Apartment for 2 years; while the previous management were difficult to deal with, the current management is great. The property provides great amenities such as a swimming pool, a gym, a tennis court, a volleyball court, pet park, and lots of parking spaces (including shaded and garages). What we like the most is the lake, where we can swim, fish, kayak, paddle-board and host gatherings. In short, the property management had its downs, but they have been proving and giving the place the energy it needed!
Plain and simple, do not live here. Yes, the area is great and it's a short drive to pretty much anywhere thanks to it being extremely close to 670, but there are many other locations that are, one, closer to Grandview (or wherever you're looking to be near), two, cheaper, and three, are not run by an incompetent rental company. All problems that I had in the year I lived there stemmed from the over-arching company and the various managers (and their staffs) that ran the property. And even then, everything comes down to the lack of communication, or even the company's refusal to communicate, with its tenants. Shortly after having moved in (in mid-July), the AC unit broke and "emergency maintenance" never once responded to a phone call (actually, they never once, EVER, in the year I lived there, responded to a phone call. Ever.) and every maintenance request I put into the online system was closed and marked "completed" although the AC did not work. I literally had to sit in the main office for two hours until they figured out what to do to fix the unit. And even then, it was not finished until the following day. But, the absolute worst thing was moving out. I was told I was going to have to come back and pay my last month's utilities. That's fine, I understand, and on 9/1 I went back to the property and paid the bill on its due date. The following week I get a phone call from a collection agency saying that Runaway Bay had put that bill into collections on 8/31, the day before it was actually due. Since then, I have called the property multiple times to ask them about how incompetent someone in their office can be so as to let something as damaging as this happen. IF I get an answer from someone at the actual company, I'm usually put on hold or transferred to a voicemail. If I don't and my call is transferred to someone off-site (leasing office, I believe?), more messages are left and still no one calls me back. Luckily I was able to resolve the collections issue (having had a cleared check from my bank, showing that Runaway cashed it) and I've given up ever getting some sort of response/explanation/apology from them for over-paying to live at a place that employs people that are so inept that it should be a crime. Plain and simple, don't live here. The "perks" are just not worth it.
My boyfriend and I were very excited to move in to Runaway Bay due to the awesome location, amenities and a large amount of play area for our dog. But we quickly realized this was not an apartment we would stay in. When we moved in, we found various appliances broken and large gouges on the walls, gum in the carpet, etc. When we asked for these things to be fixed, we were given the run around because they did not send a representative with us to go over the apartment at move in. The gouges on the wall and the disgusting carpet gum was never fixed by them. During the course of our lease, we have needed to call the emergency after-hours number, due to water leaking through our ceiling (which was never answered) and have needed a broken dishwasher fixed. The dirty dishwasher (that now has caused the entire kitchen to smell like rotting food) is STILL going on 3 weeks without a single person coming in to look at it, and after we were told that this issue was labeled an "emergency" and someone would be right out. The obvious carelessness of the staff outweighs any positives about this place in my opinion. When you pay for services you should be receiving them, not hunting down the staff so they will follow up and do their job. This place goes through management company after management company (we have seen 3 in 9 months time) for a reason. Renters stay away!!!
I have been living at Runaway Bay for just over 6 months now, and I couldn't be happier! Some of the fantastic amentities include: A newly renovated pool, complete with a bungalow style lounge area, multiple gas grills, and plenty of space. A quarry, great for swimming, boating, fishing, or just floating around and relaxing the summer days away. There are tennis courts, a volley ball court, basketball hoops, and a dog park for four legged friends. Utilities are also currently being updated, and the apartments are very spacious. The employees, from the office staff to the maintenance crew, are always quick to great me with a smile and a positive attitude. Also, The location is just a few minutes from downtown Columbus, which I love. I definitely recommend checking out Runaway Bay!
Amenities are awesome (pool, lake, gym, tennis courts, basketball hoops, sand volleyball, etc.) Rent is priced very well for the area. Parking is easy (and they have more options if you want a garage or car port) They have been very helpful at the front desk whenever I had an issue.
My apartment is in the process of a renovationa nd new staff. I'm looking forward to seeing how everything comes out nexy year!
These apartments are in a good location, and when they are in good repair, they are average quality for the price. Unfortunately, they are rarely in good repair. The front doors on multiple buildings have been broken for weeks or sometimes months at a time, on many occasions, rendering the keypad security useless. The lawns around the buildings go weeks without being mowed, and are covered in dog excrement. I had a leaky hole in my ceiling for nearly 10 months, despite repeated requests for maintenance. The new office manager and staff are rude and more interested in getting new residents than keeping the existing residents happy, which is why they have an extremely high turnover rate on apartments and are constantly advertising and updating the public areas like entry way landscaping and the office, while the actual apartments are falling apart.
Prime location on the edge of the Columbus, OH suburb of Grandview. Great restaurants and shops, accessibility to bike paths, as well as easy interstate access. The apartment itself is somewhat not up to date, but you are paying for the location and amenities here. There is a large quarry for swimming, boating, kayaking, etc., as well as a renovated swimming pool, workout facility, basketball and tennis court, and outdoor sand volleyball court. The complex is very pet friendly and has a fenced in dog park. The main cons are that the rent increases dramatically each year ($100 ave for us so far without any updates to the apartment), the management has changed 3 times in 5 years and is somewhat incompetent, and repairs are not timely.
I've lived here for over 6 years and the rental management co. keeps changing. The latest company is the first to do any upgrades to the property. However, none have been done to the apartments themselves. In addition, my rent has gone up over $300/mo. in this time.
Property Manager at Runaway Bay Apartments, Responded To This Review
Dear Resident, Thank you for your response and I sincerely apologize for any negative experience you've had in the past. JRK has managed this property for 6 years however managers do change when it comes to promotions or changing locations, just like any other field. Please reach out to me directly in order to discuss any issues you may have pending. No renewal rates should've went out at a 50% increase, so please feel free to reach out to me so I may address this issue.
Runaway Bay has all the amenities you want in an apartment complex. There is an updated gym, pool, basketball court, and lake that give plenty of entertainment during the week or on the weekend. It is the best price you will find in the Grandview area and is a quick drive to many bars and restaurants. Overall, Runaway Bay is the most affordable place you will find in Grandview with these amenities.
