Property Ratings at Salem and Gloucester
I have lived here for 8 years. This was my first apartment after moving away from family and it has been a wonderful experience. Any time I had any issue (which were always small and rare) I was always able to call Gus and he would get it handled the same day. It’s a beautiful, safe place and close to the Berlin turnpike which is very convenient. I would live her forever if I could. It’s a nice place to take my baby for a walk around the parking lot. It’s truly a nice place to live!
They never respond, or get back to you when you call! Terrible way to run a business!
If you’re looking for a quiet, well maintained apartment look no further! My husband and I lived here a year and a half and have no bad things to say. The owner and maintenance director Gus is fantastic. He’s friendly and always very responsive to anything you need! The community and other residents are all nice and respectful of each other. The apartments are clean and well maintained. Not to mention the location is great! Right off the Berlin turnpike you have access to almost everything, and the 7/11 across the street is certainly a plus. We would have stayed here for quite some time if we hadn’t bought a house. Such a breath of fresh air after the last place we lived at. This place is great!
Gus was extremely helpful anything I needed he was always there. Apartment complex has nice and quiet people. Very clean. One of the best places to live in the heart of CT!
I had the pleasure of living here for a year but had to move more towards the south of CT. While living here, the neighborhood was always quiet and people were friendly. Gus was incredibly nice and if you had any issues, he would quickly work to resolve them. The location is definitely one of the best positives, everything you could possibly need is only 2-10 minutes away including restaurants, household supplies, groceries, laundromat (I preferred to go to Top Kat instead of using the basement's machines), car wash, auto shop/repair, etc. One con was that the walls were thin so you could hear neighbors next door, but they weren't loud all the time only sometimes so it wasn't a big deal for me. Parking was always available in front of the apartment too which was a big plus. The price was a bit high in my opinion for the quality of the apartment as it wasn't as high end as I'd hoped it'd be, but I still recommend Salem Village for the comfort and location, I enjoyed my year there and would definitely look to move back in the future if it's convenient for me to live in Newington again.
A little more two years ago we moved to Salem Village; my husband and I love living here, the place is always clean and very nice, next month we will to a townhouse. Family atmosphere is breathed.
Great location, super convenient. Close to everything.
I've been here for 5 years. Ups: awesome location right by Target, 7/11, gas station, Bob's Furniture, ice cream shop, Moe's, Joann's plaza, etc. - all close. Very nice place by the Berlin Turnpike (an array of stores and restaurants), and at a pretty good price. Area can be quiet, but kids playing and cars driving by make it not too quiet. Even when most of the town loses electricity, this place usually doesn't/has Target with its generators across the street running. Gus, the superintendent, is very helpful. He can fix almost anything, and is very friendly. Pretty spacious closets, and the inside is decent and matches the price. Heating works well. Neighbors are good overall. However, definitely lots of cons. Even though there are lots of great kids, there's no playground for them. The walls are thin. The air conditioners (one upstairs, one down) don't always do the job. The laundry facilities haven't been cleaned for a decade, so they're dirty and the machines barely work and often eat your coins. You're not allowed to have your own laundry machines, and you're expected to pay to use their crappy ones. There also aren't enough machines. Gus does a great job with cleaning the snow, but poor guy seems to do just about everything. You'll see him out on a snow day for hours with no help. I never see the managers/landlord around here, and you have to talk to them through Gus almost all the time. He seems to be the only super, so when he's busy, you're left waiting, which is more on the managers than him. They've gotta hire more people and be more present. There have been mice and bedbugs in neighbors' condos, and because they're all connected, the bedbugs especially can spread, and the managers don't do much about it. My neighbors had to hire exterminators since the managers would not help them. The managers are okay at first, but go on to be less present and unaccommodating. I wouldn't say they're scary, but they aren't at all helpful or understanding. Some family friends live in their Avon condos, which seems to get much better service, so I think they put these Newington places in the back seat. Overall, awesome location if you like a mix of busy and quiet, pretty good financial deal (and hopefully you won't have to deal with mice, bedbugs, or other issues like that), great super, good neighbors, but the managers are the lowlight.
I lived in a townhouse here for a year and had some ups and down like with normal places. The good things: The location itself is truly wonderful. There would be ducks wandering around, chipmunks and squirrels living it up around the complex, and the units right off the turnpike are impressively safe. There is free heat and hot water. The space is very reasonable and tenants are decent. Winter snow management is very well handled by the maintenance guy, Gus who is in general very friendly. Pricing is very good for what you get, you can have a grill (awesome), and location also allows you to mosey around to Target, 7-Eleven, etc. Some negatives: The manager is a complete jerk (not the words that I would traditionally choose). If you try to find reviews on this well known complex you will not find any (questionable--who knows this may even be erased). The building is somewhat cheaply done for a $1350 townhouse. My unit had a mouse problem one spring and I'm pretty sure the manager just forced Gus to handle it instead of trying to get a professional-Gus and myself discovered holes in a closet, by the over, and under the heaters that led to the basement likely where they were coming in. And one thing that left a huge distaste in my mouth was that we were locked out once at 4pm on a Thursday and Gus told me we would have to give him cash or a check for $25 to him personally--upon reading the lease, it stated $10 fee, and when I asked the manager, Steve, & he said the lease was out of date and that was the after hours fee.. I pointed out contract flaw and how it was not after hours and Steve pretty much foot in mouthed it and was done talking to me.
