Newark’s dominant landmark and cultural hub is undeniably the University of Delaware campus, where the student body nearly matches the city’s population of permanent residents. Accordingly, many of the community’s resources are tailor-made for the collegiate crowd: an eclectic mix of restaurants and nightlife venues lines Main Street on the north side of campus, and affordable apartments are easy to find anywhere in town.
Despite the fact that it is primarily a college town, Newark maintains a diverse population with rental options available to suit any lifestyle. The sprawling nature preserves that border the northern end of the city provide gorgeous settings for hiking, camping, canoeing, and simply enjoying the great outdoors. Just thirty minutes from Wilmington, Newark also makes an excellent home base for commuters.

Property Ratings at School Lane Garden Apartments
If it weren't for the landlord/ manager terri I would give this complex 5 stars. However, simply due to her attitude and personality in general I give these apartments 1 star. Would probably give a lower rating if I could. She is unbelievably rude, impatient, and it seems like she seeks out any means possible to irritate the residents and get them to pay extra fees. It seems she has no social awareness- one time she unlocked our apartment door at 8am on a MONDAY MORNING, while everyone in our apartment was sleeping. She yelled into our apartment to ask if anyone was home because she had a question for us. She could have EMAILED or CALLED like a normal, humane person but instead goes to the extreme every time to be as obnoxious as possible. Horrible, horrible, horrible. Stay away from school lane if you can!!!!!
The unit is pretty close to the campus. Design is really nice. Utility is not included. However the main problem with this unit is the lady who is the manager. She literally tries to annoy you. You sign a contract with her but she always add lots of new things to the contract through out the notices she hands out occasionally. My boyfriend can not visit me whenever we plan, because getting visitors parking permit for him is another problem and she always thinks wrongfully that people are going to take advantage of visitor's parking lots. I used to recommend this unit to my friends. But now I really DO NOT and WILL NOT RECOMMEND it to people any more!
Previously, I lived here for almost a year and finally I can move out now. Actually, I want to move out in the third month since when I live here I find the utility included water, gas, electronic is pretty high, almost $260-$340 a month. However, in the lease, they do not allow you to sublease, so if you sign the agreement here, then you are locked in the lease. In winter time, you need to pay $340 a month since the AC is on. In autumn or spring, you need to pay around $260 since AC is off. The water fee is pretty high, specifically over $50 a month. Once my friend lived here, he paid $100 a month. So ridiculous! The expensive utility fee is mostly related to the condition and the design of the apartment. Moreover, the attitude of the property manager is pretty rude and impatience. You will feel very uncomfortable when you talk with her or ask her to fix something in your apt. She only smiled at you or talks to you politely when you just pay the application fee and decided to live here. Once you signed the agreement, she will change her attitude in a huge way. Once my friend want to pay the rent at 3 pm and knocked the door of leasing office for more than 10 mins. Nobody responsed to her. So she open the door by herself, she saw the property manager was sitting there and impatiently told her "you come here too late, I need to go." Hi, guys, it's only 3pm! Her office time should ends until 5 pm. So if you have other choices, please never come this apartment to live. Other wise, you will regret in the following days!
This apartment complex has pretty much everything that you would want, especially if you're a student. The rooms are a comfortable size, the AC/Heat functions very well, and the plumbing is great. The staff are very helpful and repairs are done quite quickly. Having a washer and dryer in the apartment is amazing! I would highly recommend School Lane to anyone!
