The Fairlington/Shirlington neighborhood of Arlington Countyis a center for professionals who work in Washington, DC, and its surrounding suburbs. The residents enjoy the convenience of urban amenities in a suburban location. Fairlington's red-brick Colonial Revival-style buildings sit on tree-lined streets and lure residents with its close-knit sense of community. Meanwhile, in adjacent Shirlington, there’s upscale residential housing, retail, restaurants, and entertainment.
Shirlington lies in the valley of Four Mile Run, a tributary of the Potomac River. The Fairlington/Shirlington community sits just off Interstate 395, less than five miles southwest of the Pentagon and less than 10 miles from DC.

Property Ratings at Shirlington House
On 12/17/2024 at 5:32 PM, I received an email notifying residents that pest spraying would occur the next day, 12/18/2024. This extremely short notice was unprofessional and inadequate. I witnessed spraying along the baseboards and on the carpets in the hallways, and when the technician entered my apartment, they indicated they would spray behind the oven and refrigerator. However, I was shocked to see them spraying my plants, furniture, and even my Christmas tree and tree skirt! I immediately told them to stop and leave my apartment. Following this incident, I sent an email requesting information about the substances sprayed on my belongings. It is now 3:00 PM on 12/19/2024, and I have received no response. This lack of communication is unacceptable, and I will be contacting the local health department or environmental protection agency to report this matter. Additional Concerns: Move-In Process: There are no Sunday move-ins, which is inconvenient for weekend movers. When I moved in, my apartment was filthy. While building cleaners were sent after I complained, the apartment should have been move-in ready. Package Handling: Despite paying for a package service, none of the scanners work, forcing tenants to manually enter 8-digit codes—an unnecessary hassle, especially with multiple packages. Temperature Control: Many tenants, including myself, face unreasonably high temperatures. My apartment has reached 82°F since the air conditioning was turned off in early October. The discomfort lasted for two months, and I dread what March and April will bring. Parking and Accessibility: The distance from the parking garage to the apartments is excessive. As an out-of-state mover, I was not informed about this inconvenience beforehand. Safety and Cleanliness: The surrounding area feels unsafe, with frequent sightings of dead squirrels (possibly poisoned) and bird droppings from large flocks of crows. Additionally, public housing next door exacerbates my concerns about walking my dog at night. Unit Quality: I pay approximately $2,450/month for a one-bedroom apartment with parking, but the building's age and poor renovations do not justify this cost. Specific issues include: Peeling flooring Dishwasher requires multiple cycles to clean dishes. Old, inefficient ventless dryer that takes hours—and days to dry a single load. Given the way the pest spraying issue was handled (or not handled) and the numerous ongoing problems, I have decided not to renew my lease.
I lived at Shirlington House for 3 years and enjoyed my time there. Building is older, but updated in many areas. Apartments are good size and electricity as well as gas are included in your rent (Water bill is the only variable cost you are responsible for and billed with your monthly rent.) Rarely heard my neighbors above or beside me as this is a concrete building. I was in a studio with no washer/dryer but laundry rooms are located on each floor. Due to shared vent systems throughout the building, occasional cooking/smoke smells would enter the apartment. This building uses a boiler/chiller system so AC is only provided after May 1st through the beginning of October and heat is the only option from October 15th through April. The AC did break a handful of times while I lived there, so be aware! Maintenance is quick to respond to requests and very friendly. The leasing office turned over about three times during my time, but most everyone was friendly and able to help with the minimal issues I had. Lot parking was $75.00/month (garage parking is available) and Trash fees were $20.00/month. Building does offer a freight elevator for move-in/move-out that can be reserved as well as a convenience store located on floor 3 which has everyone one may need. Great/Safe location with easy access to I-95 as well as shops and restaurants within walking distance.
Property Manager at Shirlington House, Responded To This Review
Hello Thomas, We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at Shirlington House Apartments and found the location convenient. We appreciate your feedback and will take note of the issues you mentioned regarding the AC system. Thank you for choosing Shirlington House! Warm regards, Vendy Sneed, Community Manager Shirlington House
This property is located in a beautiful neighborhood and very convenient location. Many things to do near by. The property is old and a lot of things break often (elevators / air conditioners) The worst part is you dont control ypur own AC and the temperature of your apartment home and when you get heat or cold air conditioning. Is managed by the property. And they turn it on at a certain time of the year and turn it off at a certain point in the year as well. This is hell right now with temperatures around 80-90s degrees and no air conditioning. When you ask when they are going to turn it on, they are disrespectful and wanna seem very smart and jokesters and say “Sometime during the first weeks of May”. Imagine me telling them I’ll be paying my rent sometime soon during the first or second week of May….
Property Manager at Shirlington House, Responded To This Review
Dear David, We're disappointed to hear about your experience at Shirlington House Apartments. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by the issues with the air conditioning and elevators. our building has boiler and chiller system that doesn't allow heat and AC at the same time. Per Virginia building code we are required to maintain a heat until May 1 no matter of the temperature outside. It is a long and difficult process to switch between the two and we are dependent on help of our vendors and their schedule. We were able to turn our AC system on May 2. Please feel free to contact us at (703) 578-7870 or shirlingtonhouse@bellpartnersinc.com to discuss your concerns further. We are here to help! Warm regards, Vendy Sneed, Community Manager Shirlington House
Just a terrific place to live. Great neighbors, great neighborhood, great location. You won't find a better value in the area.
It is not a bad place to live. The staff make it easier to deal with some of the issues an older building like this has. They are attentive, professional and responsive. However, with the rent algorithm putting me in a situation where I am paying far more for an apartment of this quality than I think I should be paying, it will be hard for me to renew my lease.
Great place to live! Beautiful views and I never Hear my neighbors it's great !!
Shirlington House is a great place to live. I feel safe and secure in the area. The staff is very kind and is available to hear your concerns. Rachel, Troy and Theresa are available to express your needs to and will give you the courtesy you deserve. Thanks team, you all are amazing!!!
Very helpful with fast response to maintenance requests.
I'm very happy in this place, because everything is close for me, because I don't drive, and I walked all around!!
Great place so far. Staff is extremely professional and courteous.
Shirlington House has been a bright, beautiful place to live. The pool community is nice and it’s almost never crowded. The high ceilings in the apartment units and the fact you can’t hear your neighbors makes the space feel very private and huge. The neighbors are all very friendly and the staff has thought of everything to make living here as convenient as possible. They really do go above and beyond to make everyone’s living experience great here. Also the location to Shirlington Village is unbeatable.
So far we love everything Shirlington house has to offer, the rooms are updated and extremely roomy. The problems are fixed quickly and efficiently and the rent is reasonable.
The apartments are large and get lots of light. Shirlington house is in a wonderful location near every amenity - transportation, entertainment, bank, post office, library and grocery store. It is a very old building and has problems. Sometimes the heat or air conditioning does not work. The old pipes often leak. We have a mouse problem. Never the less, I have lived here for many years and have looked for something with less issues, but cannot find anything with a spacious apartment in a nice location that is affordable. So I find the benefits out way the problems.
Definitely the hidden gem of Shirlington. Convenient location, quiet, great for pets, nice amenities, several floor plans to choose from. Walking distance to grocery store, library, theatres, and restaurants, along with fantastic public transportation.
I sure enjoy living at Shirlington House! It is located in a very convenient area for shopping and dining. Many restaurants available. It's a short distance to Washington, DC by bus and metro. I'm happy to report that any maintenance requests, etc are usually taken care of in a timely manner. Also, always glad to receive regular information/updates about any items we should be aware of. Thank you! Jean J.
While the gym and pool are great amenities and the units appear to have the aesthetic of "updated", there is no central AC/Heating in this building, the water pressure is poor, and the noise levels can be extremely disruptive. There is also an ongoing mice issue.
Ive met lovely people here. Love my space and location. Any complaints that I have made have been quickly addressed by the staff.
Shirlingtonhouse staff are friendly and responsive. If you don't mind an old quirky building, this is a hidden gem in a fantastic neighborhood!
So far, living here has been good. A few cons like shower temperature, initial cockroach issues in my apartment (I had to buy a bunch of pest control items) and an odd smell outside of the apartment. Aside from that, utilities included in the rent like gas and electricity is a huge plus. Due to the Studios not having the laundry in unit the laundry rooms are smaller and are mostly empty which is great as you don't have to wait for anyone. Convenient store is convenient but you pay for it in the price (a bit expensive). Unit have new appliances.
Largest apartment for the price in the area. Close to many restaurants, a library, live theater and public transportation.
I dont know whats in the water at Shirlington House, but everyone (neighbors, staff, maintenance and the valet store owner) is so nice and polite! I have felt welcomed from day one. Special shout out to Teresa and Troy!
Maintenance is responsive to issues, as well as staff, promoting a satisfactory living experience.
The Shirlington House is old building but nicely done, not everywhere, but mostly the apartment is nice, with wood flooring, nice kitchen area. The main best thing about this building is the staff - the leasing office, the front desk and the maintenance team are the sweetest people. Always responsive and helpful.
Shirlington House is hands-down the best "bang for your buck" apartment complex in this and surrounding neighborhoods of Arlington. Updated and open-floor-plans; extremely clean and pleasant common areas, including the trash room which is cleared out consistently. Even the outdoor premises are clean and well-groomed, considering there are multiple dog owners in the building. Most importantly though, the staff are extremely accommodating. I have had multiple interactions with Troy, specifically, who is constantly a pleasure to talk to and is always helpful, above and beyond.
I have enjoyed the 9 years living at Shirlington House. When I first came here, I liked what I saw and since then, it was upgraded a few years ago which has made it even much nicer. Everything is kept clean and orderly. It is equipped with a swimming pool, gym, barbeque area and dog park. In addition, there is a convenience store for groceries, dry cleaning and shoe repair. The location is ideal as well. Just a bus from the building to Pentagon . From there, you can take any metro line to DMV. If you're interested in renting, this is the place for you.
247 Shirlington house is fantastic to live at. Peaceful with great people in the staff. Nice and helpful. So far, I'm comfortable and very happy to live in this community
Overall great experience. Community & apartment space are nice
Shirlington House personnel are responsive to all issues of tenants and keep us informed of rules and regulations. A Convenience Store is a welcome addition as well as a food cart appearance once or twice a week. The grounds are well cared for and maintenance did a great job of cleanup of pool area in preparation for the summer season. The location of Shirlington House is a great incentive to move here because of proximity to Shirlington Village, a bus station, post office, Harris & Teeter Supermarket, Library, the Hilton Garden Inn, several restaurants and small shops. The bus station transportation takes you to the surrounding areas of Crystal City, the Pentagon, Ballston, and DC (just to name a few) should you wish to be car-free. There is also a large Medical Building nearby housing professionals, i.e. doctors, dentists, a sports clinic, etc. all a great inducement for living at Shirlington House. I definitely recommend living here at Shirlington House.
I love the location, the amenities and the management is very friendly
Shirlington House isn't just an apartment, it is a home. The neighborhood is wonderful and the Shirlington House staff takes such great care of everyone. I love living here!
In recent years, the on-site management has been excellent. This is much improved over the first years I experienced with the management company. I appreciate the work Racheal and others have put in to make this a better place.
The proximity to shops, restaurants, super market, and movie theaters makes this a great community to live in. The location in reference to the highway as well as to DC makes this apartment building ideal.
We came in last week and was greeted by smiling faces and clean spacious amenities. Highly recommended this gem!
As a General Manager in the property management field I am a tough one to please but the experience I have had over the last three years have been very good. Knowing what to expect being in the business makes me realize the difficulties of this business. The staff is professional and always willing to help despite challenging residents as I have witnessed. Through it all, they stand tall and provide the utmost customer service.
I've lived in several apartment complexes across three states, and shirlington house apartments are by far the best. The staff is awesome, complaints are handled quickly, maintenance is great, and apartments have a ton of natural light. It's really hard to pick out any complaints. I love it here.
Shirlington House is convenient to the bus transportation system, post office, library, shops, and restaurants located in the Village of Shirlington. Shirlington House also has its own convenience store if you need something in a pinch. The in-house Fitness Center and outdoor pool are also desirable features for residents. The staff at Shirlington House is responsive to the needs of its community and maintenance is always on hand in event of an emergency. All in all, I would recommend Shirlington House to any and all prospective renters.
Ive been at Shirlington House Apartments for a month and so far so good. My initial process of moving was challenging but Shirlington House worked with me and was very much understanding and communicative. I really appreciated all the help I was given. My home feels that much special because of it. The overall awareness of the community including amenities and actual unit was exactly as mentioned on the website. The units/resident overall are gorgeous and neighbors/staff are friendly.
Very convenient place to live. Staff close to the tenants and always ready to respond to requests even if sometimes it takes time. friendly staff
If you love it being 77-80 degrees in your apartment then this is the place for you!! If you love everything like the water and power not working then this is the place for you!! If you love paying a lot of money and nothing working then this is the place for you!!! Ive been here for a month and the power has been out 3 times, so if you love all that then definitely come here!
Good place to call home.
It' a great place to live. Very convenient and the management is very good and responsive!
Maintenance is the absolute BEST! They always have been!
We love shirlington house. We moved from the citizen and couldnt be happier! Plus Alex is awesome and so helpful!!
I feel the newly renovated apartments, common areas, amenities and an onsite convenience store makes Shirlington House a serious contender when considering a place to reside.
Shirlington House is a genuine, peaceful community!
I have lived here for 2 years and have had a good experience. The remodel effort was great and the building looks more modern. Any issues I have had have been addressed very quickly and the staff is always nice and very professional, even when I was angry when reporting them. The rent is comparable to the area and I would recommend living in the community. The people in the building are very nice and very friendly and the location is great for walking as well as close to major highways. Overall I love living in this community.
Shirlington House has been responsive to all my resident's needs. I would recommend this community to all.
The Maintenance Dept. is great!
Maintenance requests have a quick turnaround time, the pool and sun deck are much larger that your typical apartment complex, and the gym features a variety of equipment you dont normally see in an apartment gym.
Shirlington House is in a great location. The apartments are spacious. There are many barking dogs in adjacent apartments. The concierge is often not available.
