As one of Richmond's oldest neighborhoods, Shockoe Valley dates back to 1737 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Shockoe Valley contains several smaller neighborhoods, including Upper Shockoe Valley. Upper Shockoe Valley begins along East Broad Street, directly north of Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom. It borders the MCV Campus Virginia Commonwealth University and I-95 on its east side, with North 18th Street to the west. The Virginia State Capitol is adjacent to the neighborhood, just south of Broad Street.
Being on the east side of Downtown Richmond, Upper Shockoe Valley apartments are often within walking distance of all things downtown, including the Richmond Coliseum, the Greater Richmond Convention Center, the Dominion Arts Center, and the National. Within the neighborhood, you'll find shops and restaurants along 18th Street, including Shockoe Valley Market and the popular Shockoe Valley Pizza & Bar.

Property Ratings at Shockoe Valley View
I have had nothing but a great experience here at Shockoe. Staff is friendly and ready to assist with any issues. They’re a great team & I’d recommend to anyone getting started.
Our experience with Shockoe Valley View has been extremely disappointing and frustrating. We have been dealing with the leasing process since March, and it has been nothing short of chaotic and disorganized. Initially, we provided our income information, which was verified by their team as sufficient. However, despite this verification, the screening process was mishandled from the start. There was a significant lack of communication; I was not informed directly about any issues with our application. Instead, my roommate was notified that our income was insufficient, contradicting the earlier verification. The entire process dragged on for months, only to end in rejection. This not only wasted our time but also left us feeling blindsided and misled. The inconsistencies and poor communication throughout the process were unacceptable. We have decided to pay the fees to conclude our dealings with Shockoe Valley View. However, based on our experience, we will not be applying here again nor recommending it to others. This ordeal has left us with a negative impression, and we will remember this when writing further reviews and recommendations.
When I first got here management was great and then management changed and it has just been a terrible experience. First there’s “no parking” when it’s clear there is parking and the people that park in the parking lot don’t pay and management is aware of that but doesn’t take any action towards the issue. Now I have mice problems and I am getting little to no help on the situation. I would say spend your money where it is worth it and where the people actually care for you.

Although we appreciate all feedback, yours is deeply concerning to us. We value our residents and care about them deeply and are disappointed you feel this way. Please reach out to us directly when you can so we can take care of these claims properly. Thank you and we hope to speak with you soon.
I was very happy when I first moved in and with the management. The only complaint I had was that the walls were too thin so you can hear everything that happens outside of your walls. After some time, management changed many times and everything just went from bad to worse. If you want peace of mind when living in Richmond and can spend an extra couple of bucks I would consider somewhere else. Don't come here to get packages stolen and tampered with, you'll lose your mind here.
I agree with every negative review. My car has been broken into despite their "patrolling", I am kept up until 3am every Thursday-Sunday due to people screaming and singing having parties in their apartments and in the streets, I had major leakage from sliding doors and was only fixed 8 months later, the rain keeps me up every night because it wasnt built right and there for loud drips echo the apartment, my apartment smells like cigarette smoke always because the people below me smoke and it rises through my air vents and laundry room - making my clothes smell, the printers are NEVER working, loud neighbors, aggressive dogs, awful sewage smell often coming from the pipes that the have to "fix" every once in a while and so much more to be added if there wasnt a limit on how long I could post here. I have only lived here almost a year because my contract binds me here until May. I am getting out ASAP and never looking back. Don't buy for the price, so much better out there worth it to pay a hundred more.
The location is pretty much as one would expect for an urban setting. My apartment has a balcony that affords probably one of the better city views around. Although it is not far from I-95 it is fairly quiet except for that tractors trailers ‘jake breaking’ and occasionally the VCU helicopter idling for extended periods. Reeks of stank stale pit smoke in the stairwells. Some trashy residents that seem to lack the energy to place trash in the dumpster but instead seem to fling their trash in the general direction of the dumpster. Agree with previous post about turnover of managers. The folks in the office are nice enough but not very responsive. Machines in gym frequently broken and covered in sweat stains. Water fountain in gym has been broken for over a month now. There was talk about fencing parking lot ($50 additional/month) but nothing materialized despite 4-5 cars having their windows broken. I experienced some significant water leaks around sliding glass door. It was eventually ‘fixed’ but the workmanship was shoddy at best and they trashed my unit walls in the process. The place seems to be pretty poorly constructed and they are in the prossess of trying to remedy some of the problems that have existed since the original construction. Finally, the first 2 reviews here are so glowing and general that I’m a bit skeptical about their authorship.
I've lived many places from Northern VA to Petersburg and I've never had a more attentive staff than at Shockoe Valley View. Maintenance is prompt and very courteous and the office staff are always willing to help. The amenities cut costs such as a gym membership and you're literally a few minutes from downtown.Definitely one of the better communities in Churchill. I highly recommend!
My roommate and I have lived here for unfortunately a year due to the lease. This is a horrible place to live. The park down the street is amazing but is crowded with parties all the time with people who don't care about their surroundings. They shoot off guns and parade up and down the streets screaming. None of the residents pick up their dog's waste so you are constantly stepping in it. Their business center is never up to par due too never any ink and the computers fail to login every time. We were promised a completely different unit than what we got, and they didn't give us any notice or reasoning why. They never keep their grounds clean, there's trash everywhere. Staff is unfriendly and unhelpful. Our apartment was constantly having bug issues, and the doors leaked. Our windows don't open so circulation was not a thing. Loud neighbors. This place is a horrible place to live and we were not pleased at all.

Just perfect. Pool, full gym, pool house with 2 pool tables and a 60 inch TV. Incredible views of the city. Apartments are very modern and spacious. The living area and perimeter are beyond well kept. Staff is courteous and always willing to assist. It is also within walking distance to downtown restaurants, shops, parks, and the local market. This truly is the perfect place to call home.
Shockoe Valley View - the living is great, but there's been 5 different property managers since I have lived here (1 year). Community is great, very friendly, gym is terrible, clubhouse and pool is nice. The view is GREAT, rent is reasonable.
Ive been a resident here at shockoe valley view since the beginning of the summer. My fiancee and I are actually pretty pleased with the unit. Its just us so our 600 sq ft unit is not too small. It comes with all of our appliances also and everything is updated with granite counter tops as well! Its a nice luxury community in the heart of downtown Richmond! Our only complaint is sometimes the washer doesn't run when you start it, but its a simple fix, like starting the cycle over again. We are in the middle of everything! Parks, VCU, a lot of thriving small restaurants to discover and shopping close by. They are doing updates to the parking lot so the parking situation is a task, but not overwhelming and you can often find a spot on the street with no problems. Our unit has a great view of the entire downtown, and a nice skylight in the middle of the unit and it conserves energy as well! Our management is very hands on with residents and take your problems into her own hands often! We are extremely satisfied with the complex!
