Harlingen is located on the southernmost tip of Texas, in the heart of the Rio Grande Valley near the United States-Mexico border. While Harlingen is a small town, it has plenty of charm in addition to numerous amenities. It was also named the city with the least expensive cost of living in the United States by CBS News in 2013.
Should you choose to rent in Harlingen, you will have the opportunity to see the Gladys Porter Zoo, catch a performance at the Harlingen Performing Arts Theatre, score deals at the Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets, stroll along historic Jackson Street in Downtown Harlingen, visit any of the nine World Birding Center locations, admire the large wall murals scattered throughout town, and take a short drive to South Padre Island to enjoy the beach.
Accessible to I-2 and I-69 as well as the Union Pacific Railroad and Valley International Airport, getting around from Harlingen is a breeze.

Property Ratings at Sierra Apartments
Nice apartment layout. Threatened with rent increase because I got married. Made no sense so I moved out.
Beware of roaches. There is a serious roach problem and I am not the only resident that has serious issues. They spray with in the unit and it does nothing. There is a roach infestation that needs to be seriously addressed more than just spraying, it is within the walls. Also they do nothing to address people picking up after their dogs.
There are many positive aspects to the Sierra Apartments. Grounds are very well maintained. They are well managed, at least during the time I was there. Price is about right for these apartments in Harlingen. Ample Parking, Relatively safe area and my apartment came with dishwasher, and a washer-dryer. I really like the landscaping. Negatives are the interiors are stuck in the 1980's, and not in a good way. Refrigerator sounded liker a freight train, but I'm not one to complain. But the a/c was a different story all together. Extremely noisy. After calling maintenance for the a/c a couple times and no difference in sound,, I just stuck some newspapers around the inside parts of the a/c. That quieted it down. The unit needed some kind of major work as well as the refrigerator, but I doubt "corporate" would have done much. When I left they kept the entire security deposit, even though I cleaned the place from floor to ceiling, even with the water shut off to the apartment periodically and unexpectedly. I never got my deposit back for the keys, or the mechanism that controls the gate. Was too tired to argue. What turned out to be a fairly good experience was colored by the way I was treated when I left. Don't expect to get security deposit back, or the money you put down for the gate opener. They look very pretty from the outside. Next time I will be more careful keeping my receipts.
Hello there my wife and I have been living here for a while, and we love it very much. Great area to live great people and great service as well. I will tell my friends to check this place out and why we love this place. My wife and I are looking forward to stay here forever. We love this place.
Been here over 4 years. Maintenance staff always helpful & professional. I moved into a loft apt.; I liked the layout. However, carpeting was disgusting, management refused to replace it even when I offered to pay for a high quality replacement carpet. Dishwasher was ruined by a RAT eating the wires, they replaced it with an OLD DW that sucked! Oh, and the RAT,,, he never paid rent so after Two months of complaints to MGT. he was evicted! Structure is OLD & cracks are obvious throughout. Landscape was always poorly maintained..again, the manager ignored my complaints. Besides that, neighbors were always pleasant/respectful...Good luck keeping your vehicle CLEAN as the Agriculture fields surrounding the complex will dirty it in a matter of hours from all the DUST & pollution from those nasty neighbors across the border!
I love these apartments. have lived here for 5 years and have never felt so safe or comfortable. I work a lot and have a stay at home wife with two young kids and I never worry about them here. They have a on premise officer and a fully staffed maintenance team. when ever I have any issues i just submit a work order online and its taken care of by next morning. biggest love is they have washer and dryers in each apartment, no have to go to laundry mats. highly recommend this place.
Rented a 1 bedroom apartment for 3 months. Shown a beautiful staged iapartment with stainless appliances and newer kitchen cupboards and counter tops. Told I could not see the exact one I would be renting as it had a tenant. Mind you, I had an appointment for the viewing. Signed a lease. Walked into my apartment with older appliances, poorly painted kitchen and bathroom counter tops and rotting wood cabinets. When I stated my complaint to the office person, who showed me both apartments, I was told it was "better than paying more for a nicer apartment". I wish I could upload pics. Would not recommend!
This is a nice place to live at if you never ever intend to move. I spent many years here and loved the place until circumstances required me to move. The office staff became a total nightmare. Every where I turned there was another fee they were slamming me with, all while threatening to make sure no place ever rented to me again. The once kind staff became my nightmare, causing me endless trouble and causing me to lose a chance at many new places despite my agreeing to fulfill all of my requirements. I advise you to be cautious.
I've lived at Sierra Apartments for 3 years while working in a hospital nearby and I'm moving just because I got a new job in another city, otherwise, I would not do it since I love my apartment, I love living in here. The location is good, quiet neighborhood, near a hospital and a good school, near restaurants and convenience stores. People are respectful so I had no issues with noisy neighbors or anyone using my reserved parking spot. I don't have a pet, so I can't tell how that works, they have their own entertainment space and I have never found 'surprises' on the sidewalk if you know what I mean. Plenty of green areas. Two swimming pools, a medium and a small one, good maintenance. There is a small but nice gym which I should have used more often. I got a 1 bedroom/1.5 bathroom apartment, a two-story unit with high ceilings and enough space to accommodate all your needs and most apartment complexes around can't offer that much space. I kept a very good relationship with everyone in management, Elena, Pete and most frequently Flor, they always receive you with a smile and they are prompt at addressing any reasonable need; the maintenance team is a bunch of cool guys too. When anything was not working at my place, you just place the maintenance order and things are fixed usually in 24-48 hours (if it's weekend it may take a little longer). Now rent duties are more than fair, the price is highly competitive. Once again I really liked and I will miss living in here. If life brings me back to Harlingen I will definitely come back. Very recommendable.
My husband & I lived at Sierra Apartments for 3 years, & we had to leave because we moved to a different city. When we were first looking to move out together for the first time, we were a little scared, because we wanted to make sure we found a place that was going to be good to us and for us (being our first time moving in together & all). I am happy to report that Sierra was this place for us. Pete, Flor, the maintenance staff, & Elena (the current employees in the leasing office), made sure we felt safe, secure, & happy. As long as you maintain a courteous, polite, & civil relationship with them, everything should flow nicely for you & your loved one/s. We rented a two bedroom, 1 1/2 bathroom unit & it was enough space for the both of us. If you are a 2 person family, you may want to consider this as your living quarters. Some of our favorite things about our apartment was: The unit has a washer & dryer already included, the division between both bathrooms was a sliding door- which saved a lot of space, the storage closet was spacious, & it had dry bar. Some of our favorite things about the property itself was the following: The property has clean exteriors & landscapes, plenty of parking, quiet residents (for the most part). It also has a gym (recently expanded with new equipment), a basketball court, two pools, & for those pet owners you get a doggy park with lots of pop baggies stations all over the community. Lastly it has my all time favorite service which is quick maintenance. Maintenance had a turnaround rate of 1-2 days. Nothing went without fixing for more than a day or two. Overall, we had a positive experience, a fair rent price, & most importantly comfort & safety. As I mentioned we left because we had to leave to a different city, otherwise we would have stayed living there for many more years. I will say though that if you plan to move out make sure you give the leasing office a 60 day notice & prepared to pay what needs to be payed if you decide to break the lease. We want to wish the leasing office folks at Sierra the best of luck in their business. Anyone who says any different is just a disgruntled ex-tenant trying to lower Sierra's true rating. They run a very smooth ship & we would definitely move back in if we ever come back to Harlingen.
My family has lived here a few years. Units are OK but some old appliances from the 80s are still being used. Our unit flooded from a broken water heater that should not have been used for so long. Staff is alright. Elena is rude and hard to like. I checked reviews before moving my family here but only realized how bad she was once we moved in. The current tenants have a lot of problems they have had with her. She has been known to ask tenant for gifts or discounts at stores they work. The playground is old and broken. The mulch is everywhere but where is should be. I will not allow my kids to play there until they decide to update it. The grass is mostly dead or dying and patchy.
Scariest place I have ever rented from! pictures are nothing like the actual property. The property looks nice from the street, but once you get inside the gate it's painfully obvious how neglected the property is. We have been robbed multiple times while living at this property. I am scared for my safety living here. Dog park gave several of my neighbors' dogs parvo and the baggie stations are always empty. Not pet friendly at all. Staff is OK, except for Elena, who is very unpleasant and rude. Flor is pleasant as well as the maintenance staff. Would not recommend renting here. There are plenty of lovely alternatives nearby that you should consider instead.
Harlingen has plenty of other options that are much more friendly, cheap, and safe.Several documented burglaries, car thefts, and various crimes have occurred in only a few months here. The photos are misleading and incorrect. Grass is mostly dead, flowerbed lining is torn up and trash covers the grounds. Drugs and crack pipes have been found on the children's playground along with trash. Broken fences, lights, and stairs. Tiles fall of the buildings and are rarely or never replaced. Please do not move here if you care about your families safety or well being. Staff refuses to address major safety concerns, discriminates and steals from tenants. Water heaters and major appliances are not replaced, and several are more than 20 years old. Mold has been found within AC units and under carpeting. Pool water quality is poor. Company offers money/rent incentives to leave fake positive reviews.
The pictures are deceiving! It a nice place but these pictures are not how all the units looks. There are still some that are old and not updated to the pictures standard. Make sure to ask what you will be getting. Some have cheap laminate in kitchen and cheap cabinet tops. Maintenance workers are great! Not a bad place, people keep to themselves. Just be better if all apartments had updates :)
Hello, I'm writing this review to let you all know that here at the sierra apartments is great place to live my family and I really like it here we've been renting for the past twenty-four years moving from place to place and we finally found someplace we can call home it is wonderful.
