In the 1890s, the most fashionable neighborhood in Los Angeles was Bunker Hill. Filled with elegant Victorian homes and sophisticated stores for the socialites and trend-setters who lived in the neighborhood, Bunker Hill was filled with LA's sparkle and glitter. That changed in the early 1920s, when the neighborhood's location -- perched on a hill in the city -- began to be seen as an impediment to growth rather than an asset. In addition, the elevation of the entire neighborhood was lowered, a tunnel was built through the area, and the neighborhood became overcrowded due to the ever-expanding city.
The neighborhood was nearly forgotten until recently, when it began to emerge as one of LA's trendy neighborhoods once again. The neighborhood escaped much of the city's redevelopment, so many of the older structures still remain. This trendy neighborhood is home to some fantastic venues, as well, such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Broad, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

Property Ratings at Skye at Bunker Hill
After a long process back and fourth, I was denied and the reason is because they said I sent in BLANK DOCUMENTS. How is that even possible? I make 5x the asking rent. I’m a business owner with the proper business bank statements and supporting business documents to prove my income and I was denied with a lie saying I sent in blank documents.

I have lived here for two and a half years, originally by myself in a one bedroom and now in a two bedroom with a roommate. The apartments are beautiful and rent-stabilized, great amenities, parking is good (although guest parking is almost never available, despite it being in the lease), and the maintenance is fast and easy. However, since January (when I moved into the two bedroom), the quality of the complex has declined SIGNIFICANTLY in terms of safety, which is what I originally liked about living here when I was alone. Since then, there have been almost daily package thefts and consistent break-ins from evicted tenants, some of whom who *sawed off* the lock on their old apartment door to get back in. There have been car break-ins in the garage, and a guest of mine who had to do street parking b/c of no guest parking had his car broken into as well. Then, earlier this month, tragically there was a homicide two floors up from us — they're saying it wasn't random, meaning the victim knew the perpetrator and thus it didn't have anything to do with the building's safety per se — but we had to find out on our tenant Facebook group, local news, and homicide detectives showing up at our door what was actually happening because the Essex staff were so delinquent in actually informing the building what was going on. To top it off, they've been going through different security companies, one of which had the most hostile and useless security guards we've ever had. My roommate and I are absolutely not renewing the lease, and we've added extra safety measures on our own dime to our apartment out of extreme caution. I'm so glad I'm not living alone anymore because I would be even more paranoid living here. Just know that if you choose to live here you will be dealing with the most ineffective, rude, and non-communicative rental company (there's not even an office on site anymore, so I've never met our "community managers," who don't respond to emails anyway) while also fearing for your own safety.

To whom it may concerns, as there was no name left on this review. We are sincerely sorry for this incident occurring on site, however this was an isolated incident. We have been working with law enforcements and the detectives to help with their investigations. The entire management team is well aware of this incident and has sent out a couple of updates regarding this, although we can't go into detail we do however provide the best updates we are able to. I will be more than happy to address any of your other concerns on site, please reach out to the community email at SykeatBunkerHill@essex.com Thank you. Sandy R. -General Manager
Don’t expect the apartment to be clean when you move in and they will take money out of your deposit without justification unless you demand a walkthrough before moving out. Other than that, living here was fine. Maintenance promptly resolved issues and the complex was in a pretty convenient location.
Applied and then I cancelled my application back in March, said they are returning my $300 deposit, it’s been 2 months and I still didn’t get it, although “you should receive the check in the next couple of days” has been their mantra
I'm a fairly new resident, but I must say, that this is a very lovely property. It's centrally located and has great amenities that make my life so much more convenient. I can't even compare it to my previous apartment. Haven't been here long, but I'm extremely satisfied.
Bunker hill is amazing! Great view, nice people and the staff is wonderful!
l believe that having a view and bright natural light is essential to having a better quality living, this is exactly why I found bunker hills apartment. Prior to living here, I had trouble going to sleep, but the serenity and beauty that is offered by this apartment really puts my mind at ease, not to mention that I am facing all of the big corporate banks!!! This is great Feng shui (facing the money, money comes in). This is truly luxurious living and I believe the best view in downtown!
Always construction going on at this building. And It will be that way for at least the next 4 years. There are loud drills going all day long. The building and amenities are nice. Views are spectacular, especially if you are in the South tower. However if you are planning on being home between 9-5 M-F this is not the place to live.
We have been living here for almost 2 years now and I love this apartment. We are tight in the heart of downtown LA but have the advantage of being a little more isolated than most of the apartments so its a little quieter. We are still walking distance of all the activities in downtown. It is also one of the last few apartments with reasonable rent. They are doing a lot of remodeling to make it even nicer, which can be inconvenient if you are home during the day but the renovated apartments look amazing. It is also pet friendly and has a private dog park along with a nice BBQ area. They have proposals for a pool. Covered parking and a guest lot.
The apartment itself isnt bad. We have an amazing view of downtown and the Hollywood sign. It's also all window so there's plenty of light. The construction made it unlivable and they added a parking space to our lease without our knowledge. When we tried to get our money back, since we didn't use the space, they told us that since we could have seen the extra space on the lease that we can't be refunded. So basically they stole 1250 dollars from us. They try, but there's something that's just not working. Also, if you're not in a renovatd place, things are a little run down. We had mold coming out of our air conditioner and a leak for a year. The piping is being replaced now but I've been here for two years and it wasn't a concern. Overall, 3. I enjoyed the actual apartment but all the other things wrong detracted from that.
