Uptown is where renters choose to live if they love entertainment. Throughout the neighborhood you’ll find everything from walking tours highlighting the hangouts of Chicago gangsters to the city's hottest nightclubs and theaters to the best shops and restaurants around. Uptown Chicago stretches along Lake Michigan and includes the popular summer hotspot Montrose Beach. For those moving to Chicago with a pet, Montrose Dog Beach is also a very popular destination. In winter, Cricket Hill is one of the city's favorite sledding spots.
What is it like to live in Uptown? It’s historic, walkable, and distinctive. Uptown is home to some fantastic landmarks, such as Aragon Ballroom. The ballroom opened in 1926, and legends about secret tunnels and Al Capone abound. During the Big Band era, the ballroom hosted some of the biggest names in music, including Glenn Miller, Lawrence Welk, Guy Lombardo, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington.

Property Ratings at Somerset Place Apartments
Stayed here for several months and dogs were barking from multiple apts on our floor all day, every day. I've had 3 dogs and love them, but this place is out of control unless you have a dog and love barking. Management unwilling to take any action.
I've been living at Somerset Place for a little over a year now, just recently renewed. I absolutely love my apartment!!! Its chic, modern and beautiful, as well as the building. The Somerset staff is wonderful; I can't say enough good things about them. Plus this location is great! Sure Uptown hasn't always been great, but you can see the changes that are happening around the neighborhood and I certainly enjoy being a part of the community.
Somerset Place is a very nice building. For the most part it seems the renovation was done rather well besides a few steps here and there that seem to have been skipped as they were rushing to open. Included in that rush was a newly transplanted management staff who were trying to figure everything out as they went it seemed. There were tons of new rules constantly being posted through e-mail and letters dropped off at your door seemingly on a weekly basis. It seemed a little overkill, but as with a new building and a management staff brought in from Indiana there are of course some kinks that need to be worked out. Hopefully now after some time has passed and the removal of one of the staff members things are working smoother.
Somerset Review I'm now coming to the end of my 1-year lease so I have a lot to share. The building and units are very beautiful; probably the best in the uptown neighborhood. However, this neighborhood is very dangerous, especially Argyle street between Sheridan and Broadway. My car was broken into a few weeks ago. Busted the windows out! Glass everywhere. The front door to the lobby was bustedThe out a few days ago. I have had to walk around homeless people sleeping in the double door section in the front door area. There have been several shootings in the area and pan handlers are very aggressive! So, my advice would be to avoid the neighborhood. The apartment complex seems to issue new rules every few weeks with threats of fines. Such as no longer being able to wear swimsuits on the sun deck, can't bring dog on sun deck, guests can't touch the barbecue, cant wear shorts in the fitness room, guests can't bring their dogs, guests can't sit in lobby furniture while waiting for you to greet them in lobby, etc. each of these new rules has been issued by a separate written notice slipped under our doors with threats of steep fines and warnings that they are watching us on the cameras. We and most people I know won't be renewing our lease. That's why there are many vacancies. The building seems fully occupied, but the turnover is very high.
Property Manager at Somerset Place Apartments, Responded To This Review
Somerset Place is located in the up and coming Uptown area. The Alderman and several interest groups are doing a great job with improving security in Uptown and are continuing to improve everyday. Uptown's "Street Scape" project is scheduled to be completed this Summer and Somerset is located at the heart of it; we have no doubt that this will add value to everyday living. Regarding the rules and regulations mentioned; we are too busy to watch cameras all day. If you would like to wear your bathing suit by all means please do. Dogs are not allowed on the Sky deck because it's a common area and not everyone enjoys your pet. Somerset does ask that all guests check in with the front desk; this is for the safety of all residents and should be appreciated. Somerset's Management strives to provide peaceable living for all of its residents not just one so sometimes rules regarding dogs or using Somerset's grill have to be put in place for this purpose.
Worst management EVER!!! When you have a place where 7 out of 10 tenants you talk to have no intention of renewing their lease after just one year you need to question that. Unprofessional, incompetent, nonchalant, and irresponsible-asocial-ignoramuses. As they expect most tenants not to know their rights or have the resources to legal advisement, they'll use scare tactics and retaliate if you complain about certain part of the building being unfit to be occupied. We have a neighbor upstairs who's been so inconsiderate making noise from 10:00 pm- 2:00 am for the past 5 months we called the police over 5 times after verbal and writing complaint to management they've done nothing to remediate the situation, the best part is that they're still asking us what is the issue, SMH. We were so disappointed we made it clear to them that would not renew our lease, almost 180 day notice. The apartment is sub-par, charlatans-built, don't get me wrong yes, inside looks great, but that's about it. Picture a yummy looking-food with no flavor. Not recommended for $1370/month to $1500/month. Not in uptown! Although there's only one reasonable person over there, very professional I'm not going to give her name due to privacy clause, but she's the first one you're going to talk to anyway most likely. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!
Property Manager at Somerset Place Apartments, Responded To This Review
Please note this is not a valid review. After offering this gentleman every opportunity to discuss the supposed issued he was having with his apartment home he decided to continue with bad reviews rather than find solutions. Also, the police were called on him twice for harassing a neighbor not the other way around. It's unfortunate that his distaste could not be discussed in the professional manner he was seeking but Management did go above and beyond to try and determine/solve his issues.
The property owners did so well by this historic building... the renovation is superb and the interiors are gorgeous. I can't say enough good things about the staff. Attentive and very friendly, I would recommend this building to anyone.
This is place is very nice. The apartments are all newer rehab with great appliances and individually controlled AC. The location is near public transportation so it is easy to get downtown, or pretty much anywhere in the city. No complaints. It is secure and clean.
I have lived here for 3 months now and as far as the apartment and the look goes it gets a 3.5 rating. Very cheap building and a lot of things are backwards and inconvenient. But the main issue with this place is all the rules. I get a new email every day for the past two weeks about another thing we can't do here. The most recent one was if we don't follow these rules we get fined and after the second fine we have 5 days to vacate the building. We can no longer take pets up to the skydeck or have them on a leash longer than 48 inches, we can't wear swimsuits in the sky deck or shorts or tang tops in the gym (appropriate clothing at all times) or our privilege, that I pay for, will be taken away, guests can't just sign in they have to give there license to the doorman for him to take down that persons information....for what? To fine me for something? And to top all of this off the property management is so mean! They are very unhelpful and every time you talk to them and they tell you "sorry there is nothing we can do" in the most disgusted tone. Yes there is something you can do. I pay you to live here and expect my apartment to working and comfortable to live in.
From the moment you walk in the lobby, you feel the luxury from the mahogany card catalog stylish mailboxes, light fixtures, modern seating, friendly doorman and motion artwork. Great thing is that the style is keep throughout the rest of the building! The neighborhood is filled with great cuisine especially the gem of a brunch spot, Tweet. This all with a stone’s throw away from your choice of 3 beaches and an amazing lakefront path where you will find tennis courts, 9 hole golf course, driving range, soccer/baseball fields, botanic gardens and a Zoo.
Here's the thing, they lure you in with a gorgeous apartment and a pretty decent apartment, but once you are moved in BAM! The construction is cheap, the trim on the walls and windows gets scratched up so easily. Mine has dings all over. The granite countertops in the kitchen weren't sealed properly, so water leaves stains all the time. But all of this isn't even the worst of it. Management is the WORST! It's like living in a college dorm, literally every week there is some new friggin rule we are stuck abiding by. They also love to be giant creeps and watch the cameras all the time, and basically tell you they do it. They are a bunch of noisy Nancy's who need something better to do with their time. Also, the parking situation is pretty much the worst. There is a new construction project that they didn't tell us about that has tied up parking to the point where it is essentially non-existant. My final thought, if you don't mind being treated like a college freshman who is constantly being watched by big brother and being told what to do and you are not tied down to a car, then this is the place for you. Otherwise, if you are an adult who knows you make more than the people telling you how to live your life, you might want to look elsewhere.
I love living at Somerset Place! My apartment is brand new and beautiful and the amenities are wonderful! I recommend living here to anyone!
