It isn't often that a city's downtown neighborhood is also its most beautiful, but it's very true for Albany. Downtown Albany is perched along the Hudson River and is home to cobblestone streets, elegant historic architecture, and tree-lined sidewalks. Located on Broadway, the State University of New York (SUNY) looks like a gothic castle, complete with spires and turrets. The State Capitol building is an equally impressive monolith and is flanked by parks. Head across State Street and you'll discover the Egg -- a uniquely designed, ultra-modern performing arts center. The history of the downtown area is fascinating -- settled during the 17th century, much of the current architecture in this National Historic District was built around 1800.
There's much more to Downtown Albany than its beauty -- it is home to award-winning restaurants, fantastic shops, major businesses, theaters, museums, and a riverfront park with views that will inspire you to sit and watch the day go by.

Property Ratings at South Mall Towers
My husband and I moved from a private home into this Senior Housing Apartment Building. A private home was a bit too much upkeep at our age. This building is wonderful! Easy access even with handicap equipment (wheelchairs, walkers, canes, scooter, rascals, etc.). It includes two elevators. The one bedroom's are spacious and have a lot of closet space. There is a BIG walk-in pantry (for everything including food, supplies, cleaning equipment, etc.) a foyer closet, a hall closet and a bedroom closet! The floor plan give a lot of room for living and sleeping. The bathroom is a decent size and has multiple handles EVERY WHERE to aid those who need such assistance. Probably the only complaint is a small galley type kitchen with limited counter space and there is no built-in dishwasher (though you can buy and use a portable full size dishwasher). The electric is included though an a/c unit cost $9 a month and a freezer is $6 a month additionally. There are also parking spaces available for $18 a month. Rent is based on 30% of your income (which, for Albany, is relatively inexpensive). There are people on staff 24/7. Emergency services are available through a pull cord system in every apartment (great for those who have health issues) and there is administrative staff available Monday through Friday from 8 AM till 4 PM. There is also a community room with activities throughout the week including bingo, and Wednesday and Friday there is "Meals on Wheels" which guarantees individuals at least two meals of nutrition. There are also special events throughout the year including special holiday dinners and events of interest to those over 55 years old. Voting is done right in the building and there are special busses that bring you to local shopping 3 times a week! I had not lived in an apartment in over 25 years and was surprised how easy it was to acclimate. The building is located in the downtown Albany area which has great brownstones, all the state buildings and plenty of great shopping and window shopping for those who love to walk around. It kind of reminds me of Park Slope in Brooklyn or even the East / West Village area of Manhattan. This is a building you should definitely consider if you are over 55, disabled (especially a veteran who is disabled) and have limited financial resources.
