The name State College represents the city quite well. This suburb is home to the main campus of Penn State University, a prestigious university with a park-like atmosphere and historic architecture like Old Main, an expansive landmark campus administrative building dating back to 1930. State College is the ideal city for students, faculty, and staff of the university, as well as professionals and families. This suburb is home to an array of kid-friendly parks like Holmes-Foster Park, Orchard Park, and the Arboretum at Penn State. State College features abundant restaurants and bars off of East College Avenue in Downtown State College. Apartments, houses, condos, and townhomes range from affordable to upscale.

Property Ratings at Southgate Apartments
I lived here for 15 years. It improved over the years with new management team. They put new vinyl flooring and remodeled the kitchen with new counters and cabinets. Also new appliances. Nice and quiet here. Maintenance team does a good job when I need something fix. Good place to live.

I like living here. It’s a quiet community that has been pretty perfect for me and my pets. The townhomes are older but you can tell they’re trying to make improvements. Having lived in very small apartments, I really enjoy the luxury of having so much space. I have one roommate and we use the third bedroom for storage and workout equipment. I think that room is honestly a little too small, but it works great as a guest bedroom. It is also nice to have our own bathrooms. And a partial bathroom for guests downstairs. The maintenance is extremely responsive and quick, and I haven’t really had any issues. The parking is breezy. Ive lived in places where you have to fight for parking, but this is not one of them. We also get our mail without issue. The only thing that is not so great is the AC/Heat. The circulation in the house is not very good so the rooms upstairs are hot in the summer and cold in the winter. And our heating bill was like $300 a month in the winter because I don’t think the homes are very well insulated. Overall, great place to live. They are responsive, but leave you alone, which is perfect.
I’ve lived here for about two months and so far it’s been great! Management is really nice and maintenance is available when you need them. The apartment is spacious and newly renovated, except for the shower head and the tub.
The customer service from the management company is pretty bad. I called the office two days (try both online chatting and voice message in the first day, no response ever) for scheduling an on-site tour and the guy only replied 'all information is listed on our website' & 'you can schedule the visit online'. Guess what? I submitted the form online and no one ever responded. I cannot trust to stay in an apartment which managed by such awful representatives.
I currently reside in the Southgate townhomes and have so far had a pretty decent experience. It's a fairly spacious townhome with three bedrooms and three bathrooms (one shower only), and for the most part has been highly maintained. Also, having a washer and dryer directly in the apartment is fantastic! The only things I have to warn about are parking- only two passes are free with the apartment. The third is an extra two hundred dollars for a year. Also if you plan on moving in, you need to be okay with hand washing dishes because of the dishwasher not being so efficient. Luckily I don't mind doing that so much, so it hasn't been a problem. Maintainance slacks a little bit sometimes with fixing things when they break, but if you're adamant about having an issue, they'll certainly help out however they can. All in all, this is a great place to live. Then location is very quiet and pretty, but also young enough that having get togethers on weekends has never been a problem. The grocery store and YMCA gym are directly down the road, as is the South Hills School of Business & Technology. With the complex being only a few minutes from down town, this has been a perfect place for me to live. I feel like I'm part of Penn State, without having to constantly be directly on campus. I definitely would reccomend these apartments to friends. Happy searching!
You think it would be hard to find a great apartment in one of Pennsylvania's busiest college towns, but I seem to have found it. Its got enough grass for my dog to run around, its back away from the busy highway but in 2 minutes i can be three blocks over eating at Noodles and Company. There is so much to do in State College and with everything but electric included in my rent I can do it all. Gas heat. Free. Water and Sewage. Free. 2 parking spaces included? There are some strict rules like quiet time and no BBQing but for the price who wants to stay at home every day. Perfect for a college kid looking to get out for the night. Yet peaceful enough for that first apartment a couple shares.
