Belleville is a small suburban community on the shore of Edison Lake in Southeastern Michigan. A charming Downtown district along Main Street hosts a mix of locally-owned restaurants, bars, and specialty shops overlooking the lake.
Positioned just off of Interstate 94, living in Belleville puts you just thirty minutes from Ann Arbor and forty minutes from Detroit. The location makes it a popular home base for commuters who work in the nearby urban areas but who prefer the quiet lifestyle afforded by the countryside. The community is famous for hosting the annual National Strawberry Festival, which draws some 200,000 people every June.

Property Ratings at Southport Apartments
The office staff are absolutely horrible. Privacy and respect are things you don't get here. The actual complex is alright; the folks who actually live here are nice to each other, keep things quiet, the maintenance team is friendly. But really, please heed what I say. Test the office staff a little before you move in-- you'll see what I mean. Nobody needs someone with control of their housing to be so rude and ineffective in their roles.

We're deeply sorry to hear about your experience with our office staff. We sincerely apologize for any issues you encountered. Your feedback is crucial to us as we strive to improve our services. Rest assured, we will address this issue for better service quality in the future. Thank you for your feedback.
Lived here for 21 months. The office staff are extremely rude. Location was great. I filled out the “how are we doing survey” and has been harassed since. Tickets on my vehicle because I wasn’t moved every 3 days. I work from home and travel for work. I also live alone. Refused to schedule my walk through a week before I moved out. Charged me over $1,000 because the bathroom had mold so I clean so much the seal cracked around the tub, scratched on the counter top which you have very little countertop space and I had appliances sitting on there. That’s impossible and to replace carpet. No one answered my calls afterwards. I have video and photos of proof. Refuse to return my call and kept my deposit. Stay away

We're profoundly sorry to hear about your experience. It's clear some improvements in our services are necessary and we appreciate the feedback. We aim for better resident communication and dispute resolution moving forward. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We have lived in this apartment complex for nine years and the maintenance and the people in the front office have gone way down, especially since COVID. They are not keeping up with regular maintenance as they only allow us to submit requests now if it is an emergency. Also, during COVID they silently changed the parameters of the lease to require a 60 DAY vacate notice instead of the standard 30-day notice. Who knows 60 days ahead if you will be able to close on a house? While there have been many issues over the years (over a month to fix our AC during July, etc.) this for me is the final straw and has led to this review. Stay away from this and all Edward Rose properties if you don't want to get cheated.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback as one of our most loyal residents. We are saddened that you feel our maintenance service has declined, and we would like to speak with you directly about your experience. We would also be happy to explain the reasons behind our 60-day notice policy, so please call or visit the office whenever you have a moment to have a conversation. We appreciate your residency and this opportunity to improve your confidence in our team.
I have been living here for two years. Great location, great property. BUT, the walls here are THIN. My neighbors keep me up most days nights blaring their music. If you move here, cross your fingers that you have quiet and courteous neighbors. I would give it five stars if there was a clear way to file noise complaints.
Property Manager at Southport Apartments, Responded To This Review
Thank you for reviewing as our loyal resident. We are glad you value our location and community, but regret that noise has been a concern. We want you to be comfortable in your home, so will you please give our office a call to discuss this further? We hope to talk to you soon.
The work staff here was very rude. We went on the tour and fell in love with the apartment. That night we filled out the application and then the problems started. On the next day we emailed the necessary documentation and called to ensure they were received and get an estimate time the process would take.( on the day we viewed the apartment they stated it only took 24 hours) The following days we called to ask for an update being told it was in the processes of being reviewed. On the FOURTH day we received a call stating they IN FACT did not receive some documents. We happily resent the documents to ensure we could get the apt. FOUR days after we finally received a call stating we were approved and they demanded an exact move in date, to recalculate the rent. During our call the lady we were speaking to was rude to us when explaining the price change, we calmly asked to speak with a manager for further assistance. After being on hold we finally spoke with Barbara who was just as rude when we explained that we sent the documents needed on time. She then rudely stated that she was involved in our application process from the start and never received the documents until 4 days from when we applied. She also stated that she was on the phone with us as we filled out the application which could NEVER have happened due to the fact we applied several hours after their closing time. They were unwilling to honor the original price that was stated on the day the application was filled. We were aware that the rate change daily but were told that the rate of the day one applies is the one that gets honored. They blamed the higher rent price on us after they were the ones that had blown us off each other time we called to check our status, and had originally told us they had the documents. The whole staff there is rude, we were very excited to move in simply, called for an update and were treated horrible. Extremely unprofessional management if they treat future residents with this manner I don't want to know how they treat the people that live there. STAY AWAY.

I lived here for several months and my unit wreaked of cigarette smoke. I asked on multiple occasions for the issue to be addressed and was denied. I eventually had to move out and hoped they would understand the health concerns, but they were incredibly rude.

Hello Michael - As of this review and others that you have posted, we haven't received keys and notification of your move-out. We're sorry that you were troubled by cigarette smell in your apartment and we have been working with you regarding your concerns including forwarding them to the Regional Property Manager that oversees the Southport community. We're sorry to see that you have chosen to rate us unfavorably in all other categories for our community while we look to resolve your issues.
Southport was my first apartment on my own and I lived here for 2 years. While no place is "perfect" I really enjoyed my time here and would recommend it to anyone looking in the area. Pros: -Located near I-94 and I-275, making it easy to commute to work -Very close to downtown Belleville, with access to a lot of shops, grocery stores, and restaurants in both Belleville and Van Buren -Beautiful pond views with lots of wildlife in the spring and summer -Third floor has very high ceilings, extra natural lighting, and an open kitchen. -Bedrooms and living room are really spacious -Utilities included in the rent -Central heat and air conditioning, and washer/dryer in the apartment -Quick responses from office and maintenance -Good landscaping and upkeep on the buildings - many guests I had over commented on how good the apartment complex looked as they drove in A few cons: -You will hear traffic from the highway, but it didn't really bother me -Living on a pond means there WILL be some bugs and spiders. The trade-off for the view and wildlife is definitely worth it though! -Rent increased both years I was here. This isn't unique to Southport, but it was a main factor in me moving elsewhere. Overall I would recommend Southport as a great place to live. I ultimately left to find somewhere smaller and therefore cheaper (two-bedroom to one-bedroom)

Dear resident, what a great review! Thank you so much.
I would not recommend anyone staying here. I got my car broken into twice. I been having a lot of issues with my apartment as far as mold in my bathroom, behind my toilet, on the ceiling and tub. It’s now been two weeks and no one has been out to fix the problem. That tell me that there’s been a lot of issues with other people’s apartment or they just don’t take mold as a serious issue. Then I have a water stain on my wall and floor in the bathroom that has mold as well. Smh
The location is good and the pond is nice. However my someone tried to break into my car and caused damage. Also the office staff is incredibly rude and inconsiderate. I'm a nurse that works night shift and they said they would be doing routine maintenance work before I went to sleep. They came much later than promised, came into my apartment without my permission, and were very loud (slamming doors). Someone at the office called my roommate and said I was being "difficult" because I had asked for for them to be accommodating. I felt that this was very disrespectful. Our automatic rent payments weren't going through the first few months and we got a court notice. No one had bother to call or e-mail us about the situation beforehand. People do not pick up after their dogs. We have had problems with water leaking through the ceiling which took weeks to be resolved. I would not recommend living here.

We’re sorry that you feel this way about our community. An appointment was made on March 19 to repair your toilet on March 20 at 8:00am that was discovered during our preventative maintenance checks. As we arrived to your apartment for the scheduled appointment, you had posted on the door to ‘DO NOT ENTER’. Our maintenance technician returned to the office without doing the repair. We called your sister and she stated that she would call you to let you know that we would be entering your apartment to complete the repair as scheduled. When our maintenance technician arrived again, you continued to tell him to leave – however, based on the conversation with your sister, we were asked to complete the repair. After completing the repair, the maintenance technician left. According to the lease agreement, we are allowed to enter at any time, with notice, to make any necessary repairs to preserve the condition of the apartment. Based on the appointment we had set and the confirmation from your sister, we followed through with the repairs as scheduled. We never were informed about the problem with your vehicle and hope that you contacted the local authorities to report your concern. Each resident has access to the online Resident Portal where your ledger can be found to keep track of your monthly rent payments. Notifications for any late payments are sent in the mail.
Pros: Nice layout of apartment(s), all have a lake view. Convenient location to Metro Airport and I-94. Close proximity to stores and services in Belleville. Not far from Lower Huron Park. Friendly office staff. Timely response to maintenance requests (see Con below). Having washer/dryer is a plus. Neighbors are generally nice, quiet, and no excessive noise. Cons: Rent has been raised 3 times in 1.5 years, after being told initially that rent is rarely raised. Repairs are not always completed satisfactorily, or workmanship is poor. Some people in the complex don't pick up their own trash, and many don't clean up after their dogs. Apartments are starting to show their age, with cracks in the walls and ceiling, and nail pops. Had to do extra cleaning after moving in to clean light fixtures and tops of cabinets that were covered with sticky, smelly residue.

If you sign a longer lease, you have the ability to refrain from rent increases - however, with the apparent 6-month leases that you have signed, you run the risk of the rent being increased at the end of each lease term. Please contact the office regarding your concerns with maintenance so that we can address them with our staff.
Place is nice but the resident services are kinda a joke. As a resident, I've walked in to the office for questions or concerns about things and have been treated like crap every single time. Even if it was just to pick up a package, they could not be more rude there. Every employee sounds so nice when you're looking to lease for the first time but then treats you like garbage once you're already a resident. I also was charged extra for something that was not my fault and by the time they gave me a notice about it, it was 'too late to do anything about' and the charge was forced on me. Also had to put in multiple requests to fix the same things over again... Not happy

Thank you so much for sharing your feedback. We’re so sorry to hear that your time here at Southport Apartments hasn’t been positive; that’s not at all what we hope to hear! Our team works hard to try and make sure each resident can happily call Southport Apartments their home, but is always open to hearing more about how we can improve. If possible, would you be able to stop by the office to discuss with our team in person? Or, perhaps calling our office to directly talk with management? We’d love the opportunity to think through some solutions with you!
They state that they take care of the apartments and claim to clean out the heating and cooling units. Its just an excuse to look in to your home. They allow AT&T access to your apartment whenever they need to do any kind of maintenance (with a janky letter that barely tells you when they will be there). They do not make people responsible for dog poo and IT IS LITERALLY EVERY WHERE. They don't enforce anything. There are also some disgusting people who leave their blinds open with suggestive/adult films on their television (so if you have children don't let them play outside).

This was my first apartment on my own and I was very pleased with the price as well as all the amenities. However, I was not accepted with my own credit so I had to have another person on the lease. Upon having to sign a new lease after a year, I needed to reapply for the apartment I was going to be continuing to reside in because my "roommate" wasn't going to sign the lease again. Mind you, I have been the only person paying rent as well as residing in this apartment. After reapplying (and paying the application fee again) I was informed that once again my credit didn't make the cut. I am now being charged an extra $100 per month because I am on a month-to-month lease due to not being able to sign the lease how it was signed a year ago (with the other person). I find it absolutely ridiculous that someone who is already living here, and has made every single payment on time, and has caused zero issues for the apartment complex, can be turned away to sign a new lease because of "credit". Because of this, I will be searching elsewhere for a place to reside.

Thank you for your review. Per our company website, this property uses automated credit scoring to approve or decline applications. The credit scoring treats all applicants objectively because it is based on real data and statistics. An application may be denied for poor or insufficient credit, negative rental history, insufficient income or assets, and criminal history. We treat all of our applicants the same and follow Fair Housing Guidelines. Please feel free to contact me directly at (734) 697-8742 if you have any questions or concerns that I may be able to answer. Barbara-Property Manager
I cant stress this enough. Its great on arrival, but gets worse and worse as the days go on. If I could give it no stars I would. Upon moving here my boyfriend and I had no issues, but slowly more and more arrived. Maintenance is slow and takes days to weeks to respond. They have no respect for residents schedules. My boyfriend, who worked nights, was constantly woken up by maintenance when they would come over even though we had it notated in our account to call before you came over. They came in to our apartment to cut a hole in the ceiling of our shower to fix the drain in the apartment above us. Instead of fixing the whole they left plastic taped to the ceiling. We had mold growing in our apartment that we didn't notice until we moved because it was coming from the walls behind our furniture. There was also mold coming up through the tile in our bathroom that they said they could do nothing about because the whole toilet would have to be removed and the tile replaced. Are you kidding me? Then replace it all!!! They would even come in to do work while you were in there sleeping simply because you didn't answer when they knocked. I don't care who you are its just rude to come in someones home while they are asleep like that without permission. The heat exchange on the furnace was broke so we constantly had black soot all over the place and on the walls by the vents. And for some reason they had a huge issue with us because when we were moving out and would come to pick stuff up they always had a maintenance guy close by keeping an eye on us till we were done. We moved over the course of a week and would set things in the apartment a certain way and they would be moved when we would come back. UNACCEPTABLE! We may not have owned the apartment, but we paid to live here and our privacy should be respected. DON'T LIVE HERE!!!!!!!

Thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention and we are sorry to see such discontent toward our community. Regarding maintenance entering the apartment, residents may choose to request to be present for some service requests. If the request is considered emergency maintenance, it will be a priority and will be addressed as so. For routine preventive maintenance, we issue letters prior to ever performing any work. This is to notify residents that we will be going through and performing routine maintenance, such as furnace filter changes, in the coming days. We would like to discuss your concerns so that we can better assist current and future residents. Please reach out to provide direct feedback. I can be reached at 734-697-8742. –Barbara, Property Manager
This is my first month here at Southport, also my first apartment/place, I've had a great experience with Jessica (our leasing agent) and Barbara in the office seemed like a nice lady. Maintenance is pretty prompt with the important things, and come right away for the urgent things. Haven't had any problems as of yet living here except some of the noise from the neighbors and the dogs barking below, other than that this place is awesome! The view is great, love the included utilities, and the washer and dryer. Wish we had a carport by us, my building doesn't have any in front of it for some reason. I will update this further after our first year is up.

I have seen at least seen 10 incidents of cars being jacked up on concrete slabs and all wheels gone! And when you move out, dont expect your deposit reimbursed to you. They will charge you for one reason or another.
My wife and I chose Southport because we had it recommended to us by some close friends. We loved the vast majority of our stay here. The maintenance professionals were timely and courteous whenever we needed assistance. We loved the location and the atmosphere. But after we moved out we received a letter from Southport management stating that they were not only going to withhold our security deposit, but also charge us another $250 for pet damages and carpet replacement (a $550 total cost to us). The problem? My wife and I don't own a pet nor did any animal ever set foot in our apartment while we lived there. They claimed to have "evidence" of pet urine stains all over the carpet, which they had conveniently already replaced, and were threatening us by sending our bill to collections. We wrote letters disputing the charges trying to state our case, but we were simply threatened with collections. My wife and I were unable to fight the charges because we had moved out of state where we couldn't afford the time go to a Michigan court. The worst part is that we received a discounted rate on our apartment because it was one of the few that didn't get new carpet before we moved in. They wanted to replace it anyway! We loved our stay until this little fiasco after we moved out. I recommended Southport to everyone I knew who was looking for an apartment while I lived there, but I'll be making the opposite recommendation from now on.

SouthPort Apartments is a really nice place to stay. It's quiet in the scenery is beautiful. Minor maintenance issues such as the closet door handles and closet door is coming off of the railing but no other complaints. Maintenance is very good around about getting around to it maintenance issues. Overall a great place to stay
My husband and I chose Southport to live mainly because of the location. We were new to the area and we were not sure which city we would be working in. Belleville is in the middle of Ann Arbor and Detroit, so it was convenient. The apartment was really nice. I loved the washer and dryer. The living area was a great size and I liked that the kitchen was open.

Southport is a wonderful place to live. Very well-kept grounds, maintenance service is unbelievable. Most requests are handled within 24 hours. Emergencies are handled within an hour or less, depending on the problem. They only allow small dogs (and cats) so I feel safe walking my little dog around the complex. The view of the ponds is very relaxing too. Plus, all the main stores are only a few minutes away and close to freeway access.
Been here for 2 years, signing my 3rd lease shortly. Love living here. The grounds are beautiful, maintenance staff are great, respectful, friendly and quick to get requests completed. All the apartments look onto a pond with the ducks, etc. I feel safe here, safe to walk my little dog. They only allow small dogs which one of my main reasons for looking here. There's a nice mix of ages and everyone says "hi" or "good morning". I feel like I'm in a new family setting rather than an apartment dweller.
Lovely apartments, very spacious, and each has a waterfront view. Appliances and facilities are all in excellent condition. Rent is reasonably priced, and the neighborhood is decent. Maintenance workers are quick to respond and always helpful. On the other hand, sound proofing is not great. Hearing my downstairs, next door, and upstairs neighbors on a daily basis is common. There have also been some issues with water leaks. Also, rent went up by almost $100 after the first year.
Southport Apartments are awesome! The location is central to Detroit and Ann Arbor, and offers quick access to the interstate. The building grounds and landscape are well maintained and the leasing office staff is very attentive and available when you have questions. My favorite features are the open concept floor plans and the affordable rent (which includes some utilities).
