West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

Property Ratings at Spanish Oaks
Wendy, the apartment manager, sent a letter saying my lease is ending early, so I signed a lease with a new apartment complex. The response from my intent to vacate notice was that they sent the letter about the lease ending early by mistake. Now I am stuck with two leases, or paying fees approaching $3k to break their lease. Unapologetic about misinforming me and fail to take responsibility for the notice. Rampant crime including drug dealers and car theft. Flood lights illuminating parking lot are out. Perimeter fence is broken allowing crime in from other apartment complexes. Police seen multiple times a week due to crime. Leasing Office not staffed during 9-5 M-F operating hours. No receipts given for rent payment, and must be paid by check, or by credit card if you want to pay a $30 processing fee each month. Flea and roach infestation. Black mold in pool, and pool usually closed due to maintenance. Nonstop leak in tub is flooding apartment below and causing black mold. Gutters falling off roof. Missing security lock on door. Poor insulation (700 sq ft costs $140/month in electricity at 75° temp). Tub hardware falling out of the wall. Slow drain backs up water and turns brown. Repairs take unreasonably long despite the lease stating they must be completed within 14 days. When my A/C went out, I had to live with a friend for a week because it was close to 90° and I was worried my dog would pass out. Leasing Office was not locked at night, opening up personal information to ID theft and keys to burglary. Pool frequently not locked when closed. Noisy location off HWY 61, constant hum of traffic and sirens. Unprofessional, disorganized management lacks compassion and understanding. Built in 1972 without updates and you really can tell. I cannot call Spanish Oaks my home.
Spanish Oaks is a beautiful apt place to live. It`s a small community with lots of love and caring people. We have a nice salt water pool and lots of space for entertaining. Spanish Oaks is convieniatly located west of the Ashley, close to dwntwn and Citadel Mall. My apt. is spacious, great ac/heat and is wifi/cable ready. Pets are allowed.
