Property Ratings at St. Charles Apartments
Lived here 6 years and the building has never managed to have been maintained properly. Had a serious mold issue that took over a year for them to even address. Had the pest control company lock me out of my apartment by locking from the inside a door that neither I nor the office ever had a key to and resulted in my dog being locked up for 13 hours. Had a massive water leak in one of my closests that resulted in my partner's clothes, books, and art supplies living on my couch for 3 months- because that's how long it took them to get someone out to fix it. They just told us to not use that shower for the time being- while our other shower was only able to be used as a tub because they wouldn't ever come fix the diverter valve. For nearly ruining a closet full of expensive electronics and comic books, they gave us $50 off one month of rent. When they did fix the diverter, they fixed it with hot glue, so it failed again within months. When they did fix the plumbing in the closet, it failed again the next year and flooded the building manager's bathroom ceiling, so of course it was fixed in three days then! They lost a rent check that was dropped through the box and we had to tell them they hadn't debited our rent out. We let them know our AC unit flooded the bedroom floor with water, and it was never fixed. The mold is still present, and they've been moving tenants out to remodel other units where the mold and water leaks are so bad the basement is flooding. They towed one of my guests with no warning when they had a guest pass on their dash, but let broken down cars and trailers sit there for weeks. Building manager says she writes down everything that is discussed with the tenants, but when it becomes an issue later, you find out that she never remembers important conversations. We had to give her our forwarding address five times, and her excuse with the water leaks and mildew taking so long was that "she thought it was already done" when the maintenance man told us she hadn't even said anything to him about it in the first place. In 6 years, we only had one of two working bathrooms about 50% of the time, because either a toilet was leaking, a shower was broken, or we'd been told to not use them because they hadn't gotten around to fixing something yet. The window units are very old and don't make hardly any heat, so expect to freeze all winter too.
...The new management company is great, the apartments up for rent are newly renovated and very nice. (My unit is not renovated, but I picked the nicest one available at the time that I moved in- all the apartments are slightly different in terms of minor layout things, such as the closet organization and the kitchen cabinets (I have glass front china cabinets and normal cabinets and some just have solid face cabinets)). Smoking used to be a big problem in the building (I don't smoke), but the new owner has made it a smoke-free building and I'm very happy about it. Love the walking distance to everything, especially the Oakley Park and Callaghan's, very nice neighborhood for walking and skating.
I just leased an apartment here last month. They are newly renovated and wonderful. The manager is great and she said a new company just purchased the property. I really look forward to staying here while I finish school in Mobile.
