Peoria is a jewel hidden in plain sight. Sunlight reflects off the Illinois River and Peoria Lake, and flashes of green from parks and golf courses break up the monotony of the cityscape. Surprisingly cosmopolitan for its size, the city maintains an active arts scene, and its high proportion of students brings a youthful energy to the area.
West Peoria stands about three miles west of downtown, slightly removed from the universities and businesses. Its roads twist and turn, creating quiet enclaves of subdivisions, while unassuming commercial districts line the main thoroughfares. This area's rustic character attracts those looking for both small-town congeniality and the conveniences of urban living. Best of all, this blend of sophistication and country charm comes at a modest price.
Access to highways and interstates simplifies travel to neighboring mid-sized cities. Drive 42 miles east to Bloomington, 74 miles south to Springfield and 133 miles north to Rockford.

Property Ratings at St. James Apartments
Much of the building(s) are wildly out of date. You have no option to buzz in guests to the building. We were informed this was to keep us safe at first, and then told by other staff members it was because it was too expensive to maintain or update the system, so they just removed it all together. They will also enter your apartment without 24 hours notice. They will post on computer paper general windows of time that they plan to be in the apartments over usually a two week time frame (from 9:00-5:00) so you really get no notice or privacy at all. They will enter whenever they feel like it. They also publish newsletters that they will force under your door each month (or whenever they plan to publish it). This will usually include some threats about how they aren't responsible for items they break that are in their way when they enter the apartments without proper notice (which they are by the way) and will threaten to take things from students that they technically aren't allowed to have. For example, if you had a pet in your apartment they will not threaten to evict you (as per a lease you will never actually see says you can't allegedly, they just have you sign a general one sheet document) they will threaten to remove your animal (property) from your apartment. Which they may not be aware of, but that is theft and any student that has that happen should immediately report that to the police, because even with intent to return, removal is against the law. They don't respect students, they will treat you like children but then tell you all these responsibilities you have because you are an adult. They pick and choose what they want to have control over, no wonder they don't fill like they used to. The quality of the apartments and staff severely dropped when Bradley University took over. You have better options, I suggest exploring them.
After two years in the college dorms, I absolutely LOVE living in a "big kid" apartment! I live with two of my best friends and we are conveniently centered in the middle of our school's St. James apartment complex, meaning we are just two buildings away from any of our other friends! The area is well lit in the evening and is just an extra four minute walk to campus. The apartments are furnished, well laid out, and get lots of natural light. The only thing I wish it had was a garbage disposal in the sink. When college life gets overwhelming, it is incredibly reassuring to know that I get to come home to my own living room, kitchen, and most importantly, my full size, cozy bed.
