The northern Austin suburb of Highland has seen a lot of recent development in the last few years. What was once an area of mid-century homes and a mall has become a community of diverse housing options and is home to a vibrant community college campus. Solar panels are a common site on renovated ranch-style homes, as are a number of new apartment complexes.
You’ll find plenty of dining options on North Lamar Blvd., including poke, ramen, and the country cooking at Threadgill’s. The Linc is a popular open-air mall on the eastern border of the area that houses an upscale movie theater, big-box stores, and some popular local eateries too. The Highland campus of Austin Community College helped revitalize the area and adds to the area’s already highly-rated school system.
Highland has become an increasingly popular community due to the recent developments as well as the commute times. The drive to Downtown Austin takes just around 20 minutes with the I-35 and Airport Blvd.

Property Ratings at St. Johns West
Move to SJW if you're ok with: rampant theft, cut and paste template responses to issues, no access to trash chutes, and loitering from the walking dead that convene near by. 0 stars.
Strongly advise anyone reading this to not move to St Johns West. After car break-ins, noise complaints, and vagrants entering the property at all hours due to lack of PROMISED security, management refused to email/call me back despite multiple attempts at contacting them through email, phone calls, and going to the office in person. They ONLY communicate when they think you owe them money, and pay absolutely no attention to resident issues and concerns. With absolutely ZERO move-out communication, I was slapped with a final statement of over $600 worth of move out charges, and my emails questioning the charges were ignored for weeks. They pretend to care about residents when we are standing in the office, but there is no follow-through or communication EVER. Again, any other apartment in town is better than this. I will never live at an Equity Residential property again.
The first year we lived here was awesome. Things have gone downhill since Equity Residential took over. They did away with Fetch and now there is a free for all package room that is stolen from daily. Cars are broken into and stolen. Someone tried to break into our apartment a few months ago as well as neighbors’ apartments. The garage gates and elevators are always broken. Climbing four flights of stairs in the heat is AWFUL.
I lived here from late 2018 - 2022. Someone was KILLED in the stairwell and management took no action. People that chose to leave after this were forced to break their lease and pay the penalty despite the fact there was a MURDER. Management changes yearly as new companies buy/sell the building. The most recent (2022) management is awful. They are slow to respond to maintenance issues, questions, and anything that would cost the apartment money. On move out I was charged with a handful of obviously frivolous cleaning fees for a modest amount and management seems to be avoiding my questions to explain these. It's an obvious small amount that's meant to be easier to pay than go to court about. Sadly the apartment is nice and the location is convenient, but the management, all the hidden charges, and unprofessionalism is NOT worth the headache. AVOID and DO NOT LIVE HERE
I moved out June 25,2022 due to a high rent increase. It is now October 2022 and I have yet to receive my deposit and account balance from this property management. I have been told by four different people that payment has been sent to my forwarding address but I have received nothing. Even corporate has been nothing but incompetent. I will most likely be taking legal action at this point because no one has been responding to my calls/emails. THis company is 80 days past the 30 day required deadline for Texas landlords to send security deposits back. Tenants beware and know your rights!
From the outside it looks high end... it's not. If you have an unit facing the street prepare for a lot of noise and not just bus / street noise. They use metal exhaust / vent covers on the outside which while they may look good will smash against it's metal frame during high wind and bang all night long. Since it's connect directly to your vents there isn't much you can do do silence it. When brought up to management they say there is nothing that can be done without even trying anything. A rubber / felt lining might reduce the impact noise. Someone was killed in the stairwell but they wouldn't release any more info after the police investigation was over. You're forced to use services like Fetch (packages are now stolen from your door instead of a surveilled mail room, so no camera footage), valet trash (even if you literally live right next door to the chute) and shared internet service without any instructions on how to set it up (You can see everyone else's smart devices / computers rather easily). They don't even enforce the rules they set. No one is ever towed from the garage for parking in Disabled or EV spots when they aren't disabled / EV vehicles. I've been here close to a year and can't wait to get out.
First off, the comments I'm about to leave below are a shame because the units themselves are actually very nice. I love my apartment UNIT, it is nicely finished, fairly quiet, and laid out well. That is the only reason I am leaving 2 stars instead of one. So, if you're willing to overlook all the things I'll say below then you may enjoy living here. The most important thing to note is that, since I moved in last winter, the neighborhood in which this complex is located has deteriorated SIGNIFICANTLY. There have been multiple shootings in the immediate vicinity, including one right in the street outside and one at a nearby nightclub. There is also a large amount of drug activity further down St Johns close to I-35. I often feel unsafe even driving in that area. However, none of this compares to what occurred today. Someone was KILLED in the building in the communal stairwell. I personally feel the stairwells are unsafe as they are not controlled access from the garage. I'm sure the complex would argue that the garage is gated so the stairwells don't need to be controlled access, but I disagree as a pedestrian or another vehicle could EASILY follow a resident's car into the garage as the gate is slow, and the gate to the building one garage is broken often. Also, there is no cell reception in the garage so if you are attacked or witness a crime you cannot call for help. There are other safety concerns also, including FREQUENT car break-ins (I see glass on the ground almost every week at this point it seems) and package theft from the controlled access mailroom. I understand the building cannot control what happens in the neighborhood but they seem to have taken no precautions to up the security of the building as the area surrounding it has become less safe. In terms of the management themselves, I have found the new company to be okay. However, I have noticed that the cleanliness of the hallways and common areas has deteriorated since they took over from the previous property managers. Also, they force you to enroll in valet trash that is an additional cost when 1) there is literally a trash room on every floor and 2) the hallways are carpeted so having people leave their trash out causes stains and a terrible smell. If you can't tell, I would NOT recommend this complex unless you don't care about your personal safety or feel confident in your ability to defend yourself. Would also say you should only live here if you have a car you don't care about.
