It's the birthplace of the United States. It's a World Heritage City, the first in the country. It's Philadelphia's Old City, and it isn't just for tourists. This terrific neighborhood still features cobblestone streets, and the landmarks are amazing: Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, Penn's Landing, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge, and the Betsy Ross House. Elfreth's Alley is the oldest residential street in the nation, dating back to 1702. The museums are also impressive: the Museum of the American Revolution, the National Museum of American Jewish History, the Benjamin Franklin Museum, and the Independence Seaport Museum.
But while you'll have endless destinations to take out-of-town visitors, living in Old City provides a wealth of charm, walkable streets, terrific shops and restaurants, and an outstanding farmer's market. The neighborhood is bicycle-friendly, and bicycle rentals are available at Indego stations.

Property Ratings at Sugar Refinery
I don’t leave reviews. I hate complaining publicly like this but I feel obligated to warn anyone who is considering this place. Do not live here. Each of our utilities broke at least once and each incident took weeks and sometimes months to repair. We had a broken shower for two months. Broken washing machine. Broken dryer. Broken dishwasher. Broken air conditioning. Broken sink. Broken everything. We were paying for all of these appliances for months while they were unusable and management did nothing unless we relentlessly badgered them. We placed countless calls and orders over the course of our lease and it was pretty frustrating. Then, the mice came. We looked the building rep who showed us the place in the eye and asked if they had mice and they assured us they’d never had a problem. But there were hundreds of mice in the walls. Literally hundreds. They never stopped coming. An “exterminator” came and basically explained that nothing can be done, and he also told us that he’d been in the apartment many times with different tenants over the years and that the building had lied to us. The exposed brick, location, and low rent are super appealing but it’s cheap for a reason and it’s not even worth that. Do not live in this building. Just don’t. There are so many mice. It’s horrendous.
I've lived here nine months. For over three of those months, my dishwasher has been broken. I put in three different service requests, called multiple times, and the dishwasher remains broken, with not even the slightest attempt at remedying this issue. If you want functioning appliances or marginally reasonable service, do not move here.
Located down in Old City Philadelphia, The Sugar Refinery is an OK apartment building. While I love my apartment unit, and the view especially, my biggest issue is with the hot water heater...it is so small you can't even fI'll a bathtub with hot water. The common areas of the building are generally dirty and the front door toothed building is usually left propped open. We have had several packages stolen out of the lobby because of this. That said, I would probably recommend the building as an affordable option but you are getting what you pay for.
