The management at Summer House seems to have an overinflated idea of what they have to offer. Summer House apartments are smaller than what you would expect at this price point. Location is great, but much of the rest of the description, including 'spacious balconies' and 'spacious closets' made me laugh out loud. Unless you're in a three bedroom corner unit, barely two chairs fit on the balcony. One bedroom unit closets are not walk-in. The finishes are moderate at best. The garden tub and surrounding tile is a plastic insert. The kitchen has very little storage or counter space, and the granite countertops in kitchen and bath were installed in a sloppy manner. Bicycle and beach chair storage is available, but for a monthly fee. The pool/grill area is nice, but the pool is not 'large'. The pool/courtyard area closes at 10pm year round, so don't plan on lounging there for long if you work all day. To top it all off, the new management has enacted a new parking policy. Residents may no longer have visitors stop over without paying for their parking. Each guest will add $5 per visit to your monthly rent. This may be to open up more parking spaces for the general public, as Summer House has begun to rent parking spaces for 'Beach Parking' for $25/day. Summer House has, unfortunately, become less resident-friendly under new management. Be forewarned.

I have to admit an apartment was the last place I wanted to consider living. In 23 years of marriage we had never lived in this kind of community and I was concerned that I would feel like a sardine even if it was considered a luxury style apartment. The size was modest for the price but the location was dreamy, a block from the beach. Having moved toward the beach the year before I found myself adopting a healthier lifestyle just because there was so much to see and enjoy right at our fingertips! We made the change during the winter months and one would expect the winters at the beach to be the worst time to move, but with the unusual snowfall there were adventures on the beach one would never dream of unless in that environment. Off season is a special time of year for locals! Dinner deals and happy hours at scads of awesome restaurants. Quiet streets give you open access to exploring the hidden gems and seeing the dolphins play in the open surf. My sister and I met for an hour to paddle board with the dolphins in the open ocean before I went to work. I will say, working from home was a little harder than in the past; you feel like you're on vacation when you come home. You loose your car over the weekend because you walk to dinner, bike to play and grab groceries on the way. Pinch me, this is my life! The second best thing about the Summer House are the people who live there. I made amazing friends of all ages and reconnected with ones I hadn't seen in years. There is a community spirit there where people look out for one another and include you in the goings on whether it's planned or on the fly. And there is a lot that goes on at the beach so you can always find someone who will join you for a drink, a concert, a cause or even church on the beach! So what's the downside? Sadly, the owners of the Summer House are not about retention. They feel they have such a good thing going that they increase the price outside industry norms and they are not bothered in losing good people. That hurts community and creates an environment where people feel like they were loved well in the beginning and then ditched for the next best thing. No one wants to leave on those terms. The owners undermine the leasing company causing a puppet regime of sorts. It's sad because the staff has great people but they have no real authority to act on behalf of the community to make lasting changes. Most of the issues are small, but unresolved over time creates frustration.

I lived there for a year and a half; outside of the location which is excellent...the worst place I have ever lived. The apartments are put together extremely cheaply and would expect higher quality for what you pay. In addition; the MANAGEMENT is incompetent and good luck getting a truthful answer out of any of them...managers and office staff come and go and DO NOT STAND BY THEIR WORD. If you are looking for location; great. IF you want a place to live without drama and want honest and reliable office staff; this is not the place.

I decided to sell my house about a year ago so that I wouldn't have to mow the grass and deal with upkeep anymore. As soon as I put it on the market, I searched the Hampton Roads area for a perfect community. There are many apartment communities in Virginia Beach, but none are in comparison to The Summer House. All of the new communities are exactly the same, nothing memorable or special. This is a brand new unique luxury high rise style building at the oceanfront, steps away from the sand! I have met so many new friends since I moved in, we have drinks every Thursday night at Chops (by far my favorite resturant in the building) At The Summer House I can walk to so many shops, resturants, and events. I reall I can even walk to the grocery store! I love the beach lifestyle and I feel like I have been on vacation for 5 months now!
