Property Ratings at Summer Ridge Apartments
I have lived here for 2+ years and hadn’t had any issues until now. I have made several complaints about people smoking weed in the building I live in. Nothing has been done about the issue, what the office did was put a red note on the door stating no smoking allowed. Another situation was May 12th, there was a fire in someones unit on the first floor. The office has not informed myself or any other residents as to what happened. I informed the property manager I don’t want to go back into the building since it smells like smoke and my 2 year old has asthma. Right away the property manager stated if i wanted to break my lease, for me this was not the case. I asked to be moved to a different unit and she could not offer me the unit at my same rate because it has an updated kitchen and she was offering the unit to the person who caused the fire. I shouldn’t have to pay more rent to be switched to a different unit when I wasn’t the cause of the fire. I asked if we could be compensated by lowering the rent for the next month since we haven’t been there for 2 weeks, the property manager said no they cannot do that and that is why we have renters insurance. Again, this was not planned, I shouldn’t have to go out of my way to stay somewhere else in the meantime. I strongly feel this has been poorly handled and has been difficult for my family.

I have had only terrible experiences while living here. Maintenance does not actually fix the problems, or they take multiple visits to fix. The previous tenant had smoked, and after months of scrubbing the walls, it is still coming off yellow. After trying everything to get rid of the smoke smell, it still faintly smells like smoke. The management has done nothing and ignores my complaints. They will not respond to emails and will not actually answer any of your questions. The apartment above me smokes and are very loud every day with screaming children running around and can hear the tv. They have done nothing about this. This is the worst place I’ve lived, and I cannot wait to move out.
Where do I even begin with my review of this place. Well for starters I have never written a negative review. My husband and I first moved into Summer Ridge April of 2017, at the time we worked with a great lady in the office named Cheryl. The day we picked our key up we were informed by Cheryl that it was her last day. No big deal. Our first few months here were okay. Nothing that didn't seem like your normal apartment complex. Then November 11th of 2017 (Sunday) we came home to find water on our bathroom floor. We cleaned it up and didn't think much, but when we noticed the water again the following morning, we decided it would be best to call emergency maintenance. The days to follow were some of the worst. By Wednesday the maintenance team had completely gutted our bathroom without warning. We went the next several weeks without our second bathroom (mind you the bathroom that was gutted was our main bathroom) Maintenance proceeded to seal our bathroom off, and failed to let us know that there was mold in our bathroom. We did not see this bathroom completed until the second week of January (2018) While this was all happening, we tried coming to a compromise with the leasing office about either letting us out of our lease, or reimbursement for the inconveniences and not being able to use the bathroom. It took for us to call corporate to get anywhere, and the best decision was to be compensated for the inconvenience, because they would not let us our of our lease, without having to lose our deposit, pay another month of rent. That was the bathroom situation. Things seemed to get a little better after this. So we ended up staying another year because both my husband and I were sick of moving. May 2018- I noticed some ants in our apartment and got a hold of them for routine pest control. It was not till July that someone came out. And on one occasion they granted the pest control man access to my apartment. I was in the shower when this man came into my apartment. I was told he would be coming on Wednesday (he came on a Tuesday) and instead of calling me to let me know, they simply gave him a key. I should add the the ladies in the office at the time were well aware that I worked from home. There were several other instances that I could share about in my experience here. I will add that if you live on a first floor apartment with 2 bedrooms expect never to be warm in the winter. The front room is POORLY insulated, I could store water bottles in the c

Do not move here. This is the worst renting experience we have ever had, this place is old and not worth anyone’s time and definitely not worth anyone’s money. Seriously not worth the money, your overpaying to live here because so many important things are broken.
Moved into the apartment in November 2020, everything by was fine up until our apartment completely flooded a week before Christmas Told us they weren’t going to help and we still had to pay rent. I called my renters insurance (which was recommended by the leasing office) they weren’t much help either. I asked if we could just exit the lease because it was going to be a little while before it gets fixed and they told us NO. Then told me weeks later that we can leave but if we need a little time to leave we have to pay.... I had to move in the middle of winter to a new apartment and of course my options were limited so I needed time & YES I had to pay...Don’t live here
Two days after we signed, they had us stay out of the apartment for the a day and a half to fog it out, even though we were trying to move in and didn’t find out until all of our stuff was in the apartment. Through out the stay here, my biggest problem is that they staff will not help you. I tried 11 times to try to get an online account working and they would not assist. This was heightened by the fact that when reviewing my payment slips, they had charged me an extra 150 dollars randomly, stating it was just an error, but took serval weeks to give it back. They do not care how terrible your stay is, only that you give them as much money and possible.
I have lived at Summer Ridge for a little over a year now, and I really enjoyed the area, had quite neighbors and the office staff was very friendly. I received a notice for renewal after my first lease term was up and my increase in rent to renew my lease was almost 9%!!!! It seems they gave a low rate to get me into the apartment complex, and then after a year of living there, increased it significantly. Overall it has left a very bad taste in my mouth and was extremely misleading - so beware if you are looking to be in a place long-term, this probably isn't the spot for you unless you have a large amount of disposable income.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are glad to hear your experience with the community and staff have been enjoyable. We are sorry you feel this way regarding the renewal offer. At the time of application, each apartment home is individually priced based on many factors including: availability date, features, lease term, supply/demand, as well as what is happening in the market around us. Prices and availability are subject to change on a daily basis. This allows us to offer the best price everyday. The home and rate are secured and lock into the with the term of your choosing. When we set renewal rates, we take several things into consideration. We look at the market around us, our availability, and even what we are asking new residents to pay. We work hard to come up with a rate that balances meeting your needs with those of running a business. We appreciate that you are taking your time to consider your options and even do some research to see for yourself that our rates are very comparable to others in the area. Hopefully, you will decide that one of the lease options we have offered will work for you. We appreciate you and would love for you to continue your residency here at Summer Ridge.
I literally am refusing to move into any other apartment because I love Summer Ridge so much! Unfortunately, I can't afford the rent right now until I either receive a raise, or I can pick up some overtime that would show up on my check-stubs. I absolutely love this place. The layout of the apartments, the amenities and the staff are phenomenal! I am looking forward to saving enough money and coming to a place where I make 3 times the monthly rent. Moving into Summer Ridge Apartments would be the ultimate place to live in Kalamazoo. I'm not a huge fan of Michigan in the first place, but moving in to this property would change my mind about how much I could potentially enjoy it!! Danielle ~
Apartment is generally quiet but you can hear everything from the people above you (walking and TV). Community is generally quiet and away from the college scene which is nice. They put on cool events at the pool and all that. They do allow dogs so you sometimes have to put up with listening to someone else's barking dog. However, the complex doesn't tolerate residents annoying each other so they are quick to solve the problem.
