Located south of Detroit, Downriver refers to a vast collection of cities and townships nestled alongside the western banks of the Detroit River. Among the 18 communities considered to be part of Downriver are Taylor, Romulus, Allen Park, Southgate, and Trenton.
Northern Downriver communities tend to be more suburban whereas the southern Downriver communities are more rural. Residents throughout the region enjoy the area’s ample opportunities for outdoor recreation along the river, including activities like fishing, boating, and birdwatching, in addition to hiking the extensive network of trails in the area. Downriver is especially popular among commuters for its proximity to Downtown Detroit and multiple major highways.

Property Ratings at Sunrise Apartments
The apartment is huge and relatively safe. Money goes a long way. Most apartments in this area are half the size and almost $200 more expensive. There was different management when I first moved in - very personable, supportive, and hard working. Bad... There is a washer and a dryer in each building. One set for 8 individual units. The dryer in our building has been broken on and off for a YEAR. Supposedly it’s brand new. When we all first called management we were told “call the number on the dryer”. We don’t dry our clothes here unless we have enough time or space to hang all of our clothes in our apartment to air dry. The windows are extremely drafty and so are the main doors on the building. You absolutely have to cover your windows or you’ll freeze OR your heat bill will be through the roof. The parking lot is getting more and more potholes. I was told a while back that market value is good right now and that’s why the rent increases. So if you get here, and you stay here, your rent will be the exact price as a new renter which will never make sense to me. Your rent will absolutely increase every year and you will NOT get additional amenities to assist in that. There are city or management checks every 3 months it seems. Not the HVAC or fire alarm ones. I wonder if they actually vet people correctly if they would have to do so many of them. I do wish we had the same apartment manager. There was more care and concern taken. We got acknowledgements for our birthdays, major holidays, and apartment anniversaries. Not that new management is “bad”. Just not the same. Also I’ve come home at different hours before closing time, and no one is here. Which is why I just call if I absolutely need something.
Maintenance is awful, full of attitude and thinks he knows everything. The “secured” facility wasn’t secured because the back lock of the back door of the building wasn’t even there. Anybody could come in and out. After multiple complaints, he finally installed one. (But not the right way) and turned into a fire hazard because you had to force it open. He claimed it was just a new lock. By the end of it they tried blaming me for breaking it. If you have any issues it creates a target on your back. I had a huge hole underneath my sink that was never fixed, nothing was updated, it was cleaner when I moved out then when I moved in. I would not recommend these apartments to anybody. Oh and there’s no longer a lock at all on the back door. The office and Maintenence are unprofessional and rude. They don’t have a clue how to do their jobs.
Applied for a 1 bedroom apartment back in August. Got a call the following week that I was approved and the move-in date would be the beginning of November. Called the last week of October to make sure I was still set to move in and they informed me that it was pushed back to mid-November...never got a call from them even though they were aware the date was changed - I had to call them. I was informed that I was at the top of the waiting list and I'd be next to get a unit when it became available. Mid-November came around and I still hadn't received a call. Again, had to call them to see what was going on, and was informed that someone else had just moved into a unit. I explained that last time I called, I was told I'd be next to move in. The woman said I was, yet somehow there was an "error" and the other person was already settled in. I explained the situation and how I was constantly told a different story whenever I called. I asked if they had a new date for when I was able to move in - she said she wasn't in charge of that and the manager with that information was on vacation until the following week. I would have to call them back and ask what was going on. I gave up on this place, thank goodness I didn't put down a security deposit. Found a new complex that accepted me the following day after applying and gave me a set date. Glad I dodged a bullet with this place. If they can't even communicate with future tenants, how would they handle a situation if I needed something fixed in my apartment? Terrible service and communication.
Sunrise Apartments has its pros and cons, but overall, it is a nice place to live. The pros include: a quiet neighborhood, safe (never had issues with violence, break ins, or car issues), friendly neighbors, clean hallways, laundry appliances in every building, a lot of closet space, separate buildings for people with pets/cats, and friendly/professional/helpful staff. The cons include: we've had issues with the appliances (fridge not holding temp, every season the heat won't work correctly, or the air won't go on and we have to call maintenance), you can hear everything from the apartments around you, windows are really thin/drafty so you absolutely have to seal them off in winter, and there is quite a bit of marijuana use in the complex. Been here for almost 4 years, I'd recommend it over other places I've lived or seen.
Growing up on section 8 apartment complexes and areas that were poverty stricken I have seen a lot! In and out of a ton of units my whole childhood. Including various different states. I now reside in my own apartment. With my now 6 year old daughter. We are not section 8, but that doesnt mean the apartment I now reside in is perfect, it does need work here and there, however maitence is always very quick on all of my repairs needed. I love this apartment for me and my child. Spacious closets a nice lighting fixture above dining room table as well as a security buzzer located outside of each building. I never have an issue with "noisy" neighbors are any crime. I live right next to a high school and freeways and still my complex is very quiet. I love my apartment Manager, Josslyn. She is the kindest woman ever and is very respected with all residence. I would recommend this place to everyone.
The apartment manager is the nicest person I've ever met and the maintenance is the best I've seen! The manager is very understanding, helpful, and nice to the heart. I strongly encourage anyone looking for an apartment to look into Sunrise Apts! Unfortunetly we had to move out of state for Job relocation but we're going to miss this one of a kind service. For the services and quality of the customer service around the clock emergency contact you would think the rent is in the $1,000 a month range. My biggest review and recommendations for this property is they are very clean, very spacious, safe, and my neighbors were also excellent. And closing remarks which is the reason I'm writing this today is that the manager and maintenance doesn't have to do what they do (at the level they do) but still do it and I will miss that... 3 words- Above and beyond!
MANAGEMENT IS VERY POLITE, AND VERY INFORMATIVE.MY VISIT BECAME A VERY BUSINESS YET PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.IF I MOVE IN FEBRUARY I HOPE IT WILL BE THERE.
