Property Ratings at Taft and Sherman Apartments
TLDR: I’m not one to write reviews, but this is the first time I feel the need to. This is an apartment that preys on students that can’t afford much and are desperate for a place to live downtown for school. I promise that if you live here as a student you will spend an absurd amount of time dealing with apartment issues and feeling unsafe when you should be focusing on school. The amount of time I spent on campus to avoid coming home was ridiculous. The money I saved because of cheap rent will never be worth the constant issues my roommates and I dealt with at Cass and Ferry. 1. I never felt safe. During the winter our building’s main door wouldn’t shut all the way and nothing was done to fix it even after bringing it to management’s attention. Our apartment’s windows had broken locks. My roommate’s tires were slashed outside the apartment and her car mirror was stolen. If anyone wanted to break in, they absolutely could with minimal effort. I became a lighter sleeper and woke up at the smallest noise while I lived here because my brain was in fight or flight mode every single night. 2. The apartment definitely wasn’t cleaned before we moved in. We had to do a bunch of cleaning ourselves and then upon moving out we were charged a cleaning fee despite spending HOURS cleaning it at the end of our lease. 3. Maintenance is unreliable, unpredictable, and rarely got the job done. Problems included: broken radiator spraying boiling hot water, leaking ceilings, constant beeping of fire alarms that needed new batteries, staff that didn’t speak much english and couldn’t communicate, maintenance coming at 8am and waking you up, and barely any warning given for maintenance coming, with no negotiation for a different time/date. The radiator and ceiling had to be fixed multiple times because the first fix didn’t do anything to solve the problem. 4. There was always a bad smell in the hallway, and on multiple occasions residents had to be specifically asked to take out trash that was smelling up the whole building. 5. Management was consistently unhelpful, stubborn, rude, and had the worst office hours for anyone that works a normal job or has anything resembling a 9-5 schedule. I know the rent and location are appealing but please do not live here. I never enjoyed coming home and was embarrassed by my own living situation.
