Old Town sits across from Washington DC, along the Potomac River in Alexandria. Founded in 1749, the old charm of the neighborhood lives on in converted Colonial-era buildings which now house modern conveniences. Along Old Town’s cobblestone streets, you’ll discover an array of independent boutiques, artisan shops, wine bars, and farm-to-fork restaurants.
The farmers market in Market Square is your place for fresh cut flowers, hand-dipped candles, and made-from-scratch baked goods. The plaza is more than 250 years old - George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate was a regular vendor back in the day!
King Street is not only dotted with eateries and shops, but also nightlife and live jazz! The iconic Gadsby’s Tavern on North Royal Street fed many early presidents and continues to run as a restaurant - but also as a museum! King Street and Waterfront Parks provide residents recreational and boating opportunities along the river.

Property Ratings at The Asher
The concierge, management, and maintenance teams are stellar. They are friendly, professional, helpful, responsive, and efficient. The location of Asher is close to transit and libraries. I enjoy meeting my neighbors and most of those are friendly. Neighbors downstairs and I swap cat care when we need to be away from home. I am disappointed at the claim of 'luxury' appointments. The kitchen cabinets have a major issue; the contact paper surfacing peels and cracks. The grout in the kitchen and bathroom are difficult to clean, and looked shabby when I moved in. I worked hard and long to clean the stovetop and washing machine as they were moldy and dirty at move in. After 6 months of scrubbing the stovetop is no longer covered with cooked on food, although there is nothing I can do about the oven door. Visible mold is gone from the washing machine but it still has a strong odor. The bathroom was not painted carefully. These things are a negative in an expensive, 'luxury' building.

Dear Valued Resident, Thank you so much for the positive feedback. We appreciate you and are lucky to have you here. Please feel free to pass by the office so we can discuss on any elements of concern you may have. Best Regards, The Asher Management Team
I am disappointed in the lack of security . there have been homeless people gaining access to the building and although they seem harmless it is disconcerting that strangers can get into the apartment building. Also I am disappointed in the quality of the carpeting in the apartments and the cabinets. Both are very cheap and the cabinets are just covered in a laminate that is peeling, especially around the stove . For a Luxury apartment this is more than annoying. On a positive note the leasing staff, concierge, and other staff members are friendly and efficient.

I'm a 3 year resident and have to say that I love the people here most. The concierge staff, Antasha and Owen, and the maintenance cre2 are all amazing. I also enjoy the community. Everyone is so welcoming. We could use a pool, but aside from that, the location is great, the residents are kind, but most of all, I feel like they know me and are quick to assist when I need anything. Thank you!

Great place, great location, solid amenities. Just watch out for the false fire alarms. It’s walking distance from old town and del ray, so plenty to see and do.

I moved in about 4 weeks ago and besides a few hiccups, everything has been great. I did not have a parking sticker for a bit and water was not working very early on one day. However, everything was swiftly resolved. Benjamin is always friendly and there to assist the residents.

The leasing staff is always very helpful with whatever questions I have as a new resident. The lobby always smells good, and everything is clean.
We are very disappointed in the reduction of the concierge hours From 11 hours a day to 5 hours a day- it is inconvenient. The leasing office tries to be helpful but they have other responsibilities that require their attention. I will say the leasing office staff, maintenance staff and Maria and Eduardo are very helpful and do an excellent job. We also are disappointed in the lack of resident events for the last five months. The events were an excellent way to meet other residents.

The building is quiet and the location is perfect. My apartment was superficially clean when I moved in but not completely clean. Kind of disappointing.

Dear Valued Resident, We appreciate your honest positive feedback about your experience, and we apologize for the rare mishap and will look to better your experience moving foward. Regards, The Asher Team
Neighbors are great. Location is good. My issues are that the concierge coverage is not sufficient. I can't pick up packages between 2pm and 7pm because I get off work at 6pm and have an hour drive. I also take issue with the fact that the owner will not invest in updating these apartments. I've been here 3 years and the cheap carpet continues to have a spot that cannot be cleaned. Some stain of residents past continues to bleed through even after being Shampooed.also, the cheap stick on vinyl covering over the ugly lime green cabinets keeps peeling up and causing the drawers and cabinets to catch. Maintenance just comes in and trims whatever is sticking up. I pay too much money to have to call maintenance for peeling stickers. Honestly, I have found nicer places for a few hundred less, but the inconvenience of moving stopped me.

I'm new, haven't moved in yet but everything is as it's expected. The leasing office has been amazing, the general application / web interface to support the application process was by far the best I've experienced.
The building feels very luxurious. The leasing office is great. My apartment is well constructed and I can hardly hear noise from outside. It seems like a great community.
Staff are very professional and polite! Amenities are just enough. You walk in the door and you can be very proud of the classiness and cleanliness of the building.

DO NOT LIVE HERE!!! The fire alarm issue is still not fixed. Please read through all of the other reviews to see how long this has been going on. They recently switched management companies and that didn’t slow the fire alarm issue at all It goes off randomly multiple times a month. It went off last night from 2-4 AM. Nobody leaves the building because of how often it happens, so it’s also a safety issue. Management has been “working to resolve the issue” for years now. In reality, it’s probably too expensive to fix so they just expect us to live with it and not complain too much.
This is the worst experience I've had living in a building. After over two months of living in the apartment I still have no blinds for my living room window (I had to install curtains so people couldn't look in), the dishwasher door is still broken, the cabinet door fell off; the apartment fell apart after waiting weeks to move in. Maintenance is slow (over 2 months slow), and the new management is incompetent, rude, and avoids their residents when there's an issue - this is a community-wide topic of discussion. I've been told that I need to "harass them" to make sure they do their job. Management is alarmingly bad with basic accounting and lease agreements, which makes me very nervous. I don't normally write reviews - but I know I wouldn't get a response to any complaint I bring to management's attention directly.
Absolutely love living at The Asher! Can't rave about living here enough. Close access to the metro and Old Town Alexandria. Amenities are new and sleek - check out living here if moving to the area!
The Ahser is in a great location, only being minutes away from the metro and histroic King Street in downtown Alexandria. For the price, I think we as residents have access to quite a bit, including a gym, party space, and rooftop access.
I love being a resident here! I’m close to the metro, a quick commute, walking distance to the grocery stores and coffee shop, lots of fabulous puppies to talk to, a spacious fitness area and local barre class.
Great apartment and community! The locations and facilities are amazing and the team goes above and beyond to help. We have made many friends and hope to live here a while longer.
Recently moved to the area, and have been absolutely loving The Asher. The location is stellar - close to the Metro, running/biking trails, restaurants, and grocery stores!
I like the facilities and front staff. However, new management don’t appear to be on the same page. Getting consistent directions and answers is laborious.
I love the location of this apartment! The amenities are all so nice, and the staff are very accommodating. The Asher is a fantastic place to live!
Great place to live. New management has been doing well. Front desk is always helpful. The location is also great, within walking distance of the train station and King street.
We love living here. The management has been great and very responsive in a timely manner. The maintenance staff is professional and prompt to address concerns. The overall appearance of building stays near and clean. Love the touch of fresh flowers in the lobby!
The Residents at the Asher are a lovely crew. The Concierge is just wonderful! We really enjoy hot chocolate from the lobby on a chilly evening.
There is a real sense of community at the Asher. My neighbors are really great and welcoming. There have been very few negative experiences and when issues happen, they are quick to remedy them. Rent is high, but I feel safe and happy here.
My wife and I recently moved to the Asher and our experience has been wonderful so far. The staff is EXCEPTIONAL. Chelsey, Earl, Armani, Melvin, Alfredo and truly ALL of the staff have been wonderful, and made our transition to Alexandria very pleasant. -Damon D.
Terrible management as of 2021. We renewed our lease because the property and people were friendly and we were happy in this complex but a change in management went for the worst. Not just one but two major floods of the first floor(the first we can blame on nature, the second on the management), monthly fire alarms going off at 3 AM (not an exaggeration but an average), poor communication by front desk, declining front desk service hours and competence, unsafe property due to thefts from the garage when the door malfunctions and a cheap security guard that probably helps insurance but doesn't make you feel less safe. For all these reasons and more keep looking at other properties around Old Town. We received more notifications about the bee hives they installed on our property for honey we never received and food trucks than we did for basic staples like safety of the property and cleaning of the flooded backed up sewer overflow. Options are plentiful from townhomes for rent, new complexes coming online, and everything in between and you should never think that settling for this complex is a good decision.

The Asher is a college dormitory. The final straw was a false fire alarm at 4:30 a.m. on a Monday in 2020. The regular false fire alarms were a nuisance. In 2018, mice infested my 3rd floor apartment. At first, building maintenance did not believe me. I found their droppings on my light-colored upholstered furniture, and in every room, including my bathroom. The mice destroyed a couple of my items. It took over a month for the problem to be remedied and it ruined my holiday season. The building never offered to clean my furniture or replace my damaged items, and their cleaning of my floors was spotty as I found droppings during moveout. The other reason that the property is a dormitory - management permitted one person to rent out three units as short-term stay rentals through a world-wide service. Short-term guests were sometimes disrespected the rules, and no one was accountable for their bad behavior or actions. The short-term stay guests did not have their backgrounds checked like tenants who lived at the property. After one such interaction where I was assaulted by a group of short-term guests, I did not feel safe at the property. Management should have never permitted, and disliked that I brought to their attention. Money is tight at the property. Not much is spent on the holiday party or any other event. One had to go at the very start time, or one would walk away hungry and empty-handed. Often, events were opportunities for third parties to market or sell products or services versus real events paid for or provided by management for the benefit and enjoyment of tenants. Finally, be wary of move-out and make sure you are present for inspection. I could not go as I had a health conflict. I was expecting to get back my entire deposit as my unit was in very good condition. Instead, management never informed me that they found issues and instead charged me $140 to clean my refrigerator, clean a few crumbs from inside my stove, and clean a bathtub that I had cleaned and bleached myself. $140 is an outrageous sum when a cleaning fee for a one-bedroom apartment in the area, full of furnishings is $80. They now claim I still owe them $12. It is not my fault that they overpaid for cleaning. I did not authorize that. They should waive the $12 given the above, but instead they pursue me like debt collectors. Avoid The Asher.
I've lived here for several years and love it! The property is modern, immaculately clean, both inside, and the manicured and often updated grounds outside. Whenever I've had a maintenance issue it's always responded to promptly and professionally if it's an emergency, and quickly if it's not an emergency. I always enjoy seeing the friendly staff. The location is very conveniently located next to Braddock metro, and is walking distance to King Street and The Potomac River. The clubroom, gym, rooftop grilling areas, and theater are all really nice to have as amenities. Office management, Erin and Chelsey, have both been extremely helpful to me on many occasions and I've been incredibly thankful to them for that. Their thoughtful leadership has created a greater sense of community, warmth, kindness, and professionalism. They've added several new weekly and monthly activities including food trucks, social activities, and more. They've definitely improved the property with their efforts. I highly recommend The Asher if you're looking for a new home that's in the heart of Old Town and close to D.C. and Arlington!
love the apartment and its amenities. excellent management team everyone is very friendly and helpful

I cannot give the Asher higher accolades. I moved in around a year and a half ago just after they had changed management and have considered myself extremely fortunate ever since. The buildings are clean and bright, reasonably priced (especially given the great proximity to public trans, downtown Alexandria, and parks/bike paths), and the staff is extremely professional and competent. Concierge service, secure buildings, eco-construction, animal-friendly leases, and an awesome French restaurant on the corner that gives 10% off to Asher residents (20% off on Wednesday nights!). I will also mention that the management--and this is rare no matter where you live in the world--is very accommodating and flexible. It is clear from their interactions with the tenants that their interest is making residents happy--not filling their coffers at every available opportunity. All in all, a great place to live. Thanks!

The Asher has exceeded our expectations! We were looking at several apartments in Alexandria and finally decided on the Asher. We could not be happier (and it was the best value for all it offered)! We love our apartment! We have rarely had an issue in the apartment, but if we have one, it has been taken care of quickly and efficiently by one of the friendly staff! All of the staff at the Asher are top notch! They are helpful, friendly and professional. And the location can't be beat..... 5 minute walk to metro, 10 minute walk to trader joes and 15 minute walk to old town! We recommend the Asher to one and all!
The Asher is a great apartment community with clean and modern amenities. The location in old town and a couple of blocks from the Braddock metro can't be best. One of the best things about the Asher is its management. Austin always addressed all of our concerns quickly and effectively. He was a pleasure to deal with. Thank you.
The Asher is in a perfect location for Metro or bus commuters into DC, as well as convienent to Old Town/King St., loads of restaurants, starbucks, shops, Trader Joe's and Harris Teeter. It's not inexpensive here, but it's less than DC and an easy commute. The Asher staff are friendly and helpful. The fitness center and nearby (2blocks) trails or bike share are fantastic to fit exercise into any schedule. My 1 bedroom is an open concept with fantastic kitchen with island and great new appliances. The only negative, it could use some more closet space; consider some under-the-bed storage to help out.
Moving is never easy and apartment hunting is a drag. The folks at the Asher take this to new heights. They already have terrible reviews on yelp, which I tried to discuss with them since I love the location, but they just don't care. Oh and that 48 hour hold they supposedly have online? It's a sham. Don't rent here.
