West Ashley sits within the city of Charleston and is west of the Ashley River, hence its name, and is the birthplace of Hootie & the Blowfish’s frontman, Darius Rucker. Lined with mossy oaks, the Ashley and Stono Rivers border West Ashley, creating the breathtaking scenery for which Charleston is known. West Ashley residents enjoy close proximity to the area's only indoor mall, the Citadel Mall, and a large number of big-box stores.
Situated seven miles due west of Downtown Charleston, residents can plan on a 15- to 30-minute drive, depending on traffic, to take in all downtown has to offer. Nearby Interstate 526, which feeds directly into Charleston’s Interstate Highway 26, gives residents a fast and easy route in and out of area. Mid- to late-1900s ranch-style homes characterize the housing in outer West Ashley, but neighborhoods built in the 2000s also sprinkle the area.

*WARNING FOR BUILDING 37* TL;DR: I would recommend NOT renting here at all but ESPECIALLY on the first floor of building 37 as your apartment will flood ankle deep every time it rains heavily, and there is nothing the complex will do. They do not care. They already have the apartment posted for rent so be careful. Full story: I have lived at this complex for a few years and had a lot of positive experiences, lots of nice people in the leasing office and neighborhood! But unfortunately I will be moving out and am very disappointed with the situation I have been put in because of this complex. Some of the apartments on the ground floor of building 37 are known to flood when it rains hard including my own, (not disclosed before I moved in.) The water comes in through the porch and doors, but also through the foundation. Even with sandbags on the doors It was pouring in from under my stove and into my bedroom straight from the walls. There’s definitely water damage and the floors and baseboards and doors are all weird from being waterlogged so much. Nothing was done to help the flooding issue, interior or exterior wise besides asking us to run dehumidifiers constantly to deal with the humidity issues that it has caused in the apartment. I felt the front office did not care, they did not check on us or apologize or offer any resources for help. I specifically asked if we could switch apartments to one that does not flood and keep our current lease because the market rent they are charging right now is hundreds more than I was paying and I did not intend to move if not for the flooding, and the complex said no. They would only allow us to sign a new lease at a significantly higher rate or pay the same rate but stay in the flooding unit, so unfortunately now I have to pay to move to a new complex and I do not appreciate that personally. I don’t expect apartment complexes to actually care about me as an individual, but I do expect them to make unfit living situations right and to be transparent with issues when renting out an apartment, and they failed at those both drastically in my opinion. I just wanted to make sure no one else gets forced to move apartments short notice due to an unforeseen flooding apartment here because it rains a lot in Charleston and floods are expensive and I do not trust this complex to do the right thing. I relocated from another state early this year. Wanted West Ashley area because of location. Lots of apartments to choose from but glad I chose this one! The office staff has been amazing since I moved in. Very responsive any time I've had a question. Just a couple minor maintenance requests that are handled immediately. The maintenance staff is wonderful. A relaxing, quiet and safe environment is here.

My friend witnessed the family that lived in my apartment move out less than a week before I moved in. Nothing worked. All appliances were old and broken. the water was shut off to most everything and I ended up making repairs myself. It's obvious the management here doesn't check anything and as soon as they get your deposit they don't care. Also the parcel lockers are useless. A mandatory charge for something the carrier never use. So far two packages have gone missing from my doorstep where they shouldn't be delivered to. I could write a whole book on why I give this place one star, but I've already done that in a memo. When an entire Army command blacklists a property, that speaks volumes. Avoid this pit.

My family moved here about a month ago and we have had a great experience so far. The staff is very helpful and we love the location. Our apartment fits our needs and maintenance has been quick to respond to our repair requests.

This year our 1st granddaughter was born in West Ashley. We are life-long homeowners and permanent residents in the upstate of SC. (Go Tigers!) We quickly realized that hotel life nor moving in every other weekend with our children was reasonable but we had to be here to spend time with our new grand. Someone recommended Plantation Oaks and we loved it from day one. The grounds, the pool, the hottub, the gym, the clubhouse all are beautifully maintained. We adore the layout of our apartment. It is quiet, comfortable and feels like home. The staff is outstanding. Denise was our 1st contact when touring and she as well as the whole staff are exceptional. Cruz is our main man for maintenance. If we ever need anything he is right there. We have wonderful neighbors. We have already made new friends and so has our Beagle. We love that Plantation Oak's staff & residents love puppies like we do! We totally, 100 percent, recommend Plantation Oaks as a permanent or part-time residence.
We absolutely loved living in Plantation oaks! It was quiet, the property was clean and well maintained and the staff was wonderful. Due to unforeseen circumstances, we had to move out before our lease was up. The staff here made everything easy and run smoothly. They contacted us and were upfront about termination fees, they helped us to make payment arrangements and were understanding when things came up. We were sad to leave but couldn't be more happier with the way everything was handled. I would recommend this property and these folks to anyone!
I HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN A HOUSE SO I WAS A BIT NERVOUS BY THE IDEA OF APARTMENT LIVING. I HAVE TO SAY, THIS EXPERIENCE HAS BEEN A PLEASANT SURPRISE. NOT ONLY DO I LOVE MY ACTUAL APARTMENT AND LAY OUT, I HAVE GREAT NEIGHBORS AND WHILE BEING IN THE TRADITIONAL APARTMENT SURROUNDINGS WHERE THERE IS A MULTIDUDE OF PEOPLE, THE COMPLEX IS QUIET AND RELAXING. ADDITIONALLY, I AM A PET OWNER (MY DOG WEIGHS 100 LBS) SO I WAS ANXIOUS ABOUT THE CONCEPT OF HAVING SUCH A LARGE ANIMAL IN THIS ENVIRONMENT BUT I HAVE FOUND THE GROUNDS TO BE VERY PET FRIENDLY AND MY DOG HAS ADAPTED VERY WELL. WE ARE BOTH VERY HAPPY AND LOOK FORWARD TO OUR NEW START AND CONTINUED JOURNEY HERE!
