Academia is not in short supply in Amherst. The town, also nicknamed “Knowledge Corridor,” houses three out of five institutions of the Five College Consortium, including Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. So they really know their stuff here!
Much like the campuses, the city’s downtown area is vibrant and encompassed by a cinema, coffeehouses, diverse restaurants, and bookstores. Amherst Town Common is a large green space along North Pleasant Street, an ideal location for a pick-up Frisbee game or relaxing with a favorite novel under an oak tree. This college town has it all including Emily Dickinson’s childhood home, which is now a museum dedicated to the famous poet and her family.
Being immersed in culture is what makes Amherst a great city. Many conservations are located here, so the area is naturally beautiful year-round. In addition to Hampshire Mall and Interstate 91, locals want you to know how to say the city’s name correctly.

Property Ratings at The Boulders
The two main issues are the management and the condition of the apartments. Some apartments are newer, but the ones that are not are still quite expensive, even though you may deal with mice infestation, ceiling tiles that are falling apart, holes in the walls, etc. They are liveable apartments and the location is okay but it’s a bit frustrating dealing with the new management. For example, people steal packages and in an attempt to help the situation they announced to everyone that the cameras outside the buildings do not work. If you can afford to, I would look elsewhere.

I've lived in The Boulders since 2016. Early in 2022, NBM bought the property. They are truly ruining the place. They've laid off most of the maintenance staff and very basic problems remain unaddressed for days, weeks, even months. They have a high turnover rate in office staff, so that it's impossible for residents to develop a good rapport with management (I feel this is by design). And they're making cosmetic adjustments to units and then raising rent by $700+ -- never mind that what really makes for a good living experience isn't new fixtures, but consistent customer service and a well-maintained property. It's a cliché of internet reviewing, but if I could rate The Boulders 0/5, I would.

They fix nothing, including damage from a flood in July they continue to ignore to this day, and they're surly when you ask them to do their jobs. They continually lie directly to our faces. I deeply regret signing this lease.

I recently applied to the complex when they changed property management companies. I have experienced unsatisfactory customer service. I made an appointment to view an apartment and no one was onsite to give a tour, I was stood up. Whenever I have called and sent emails, no one would respond. I was having issues with my application and when I would reach out, leasing staff would not help because they would not listen to what the actual issue is. I am sure once you move in, the experience gets better, but they do not treat applicants very well. Very frustrating for people who are looking for an apartment from out of state.

I moved here mid-summer surge in the pandemic. Things were odd all over, rental companies, car shipping, etc. Moving into my apartment was the easiest part of the move. The staff and administration did everything they could to make the transition as seamless as possible. Anytime a maintenance issue comes up, it is resolved quickly. When I bought AC units and requested them be installed, I expected them to maybe be installed the next day. But I went to Lowe's to buy the units and as soon as I returned, the maintenance person was there waiting and installed them quickly. Another time there was a main clog. It was fixed within maybe two hours or so. I don't no why they give this a minimal transit score... There is a bus stop right here centrally located, and the buses in this town are pretty great (especially compared to where I came from). Also there is an electric bike rental station right outside of the complex. These are quick and cheap. Using them will get you to Wal-Mart in about 10 minutes and Liquors 44/Big Y in about 12 (I timed it). Uber and Lyft are seemingly not too reliable, but then again that may be pandemic-related. Point is, I was without a car for about a month and a half when I first got here, and I had no problem getting around to the essentials. It's a relatively calm and quiet complex (at least on my end). I don't really have many issues with neighbors, other than during move-in/out surge at the beginning of the semester, people were just dumping garbage on the streets. That being said, the complex reacted quickly to acquire more dumpsters and pick all that up (although some people still didn't get the hint and continued dumping). I expected there to be a lot more partying and loudness outside with a rush in undergraduates moving here, but there really aren't. There's a few pockets, but they're reasonably respectful most of the time. Even if they get a little loud (rarely), the windows here do not transmit much noise, so you don't really here it if they're closed. Note: All of that may change in a non-pandemic semester. I've yet to see that. Overall, I think this is a great complex so far. Reasonably priced, traffic is not bad and public transit is great, so no matter how you get around it doesn't take too long. The staff and administration are friendly and helpful and remember who I am even though I'm just one amongst many.

The Boulders is a large, well maintained apartment complex. The apartments are larger than normal two bedroom units. The living room has a huge double size window, from floor to ceiling, allowing in plenty of sunlight, bird songs, and beautiful sunsets if you happen to face west. Landscaping is professionally done weekly and grounds are kept clean. It is surrounded by protected conservation areas, and home to New England Cottontail rabbits, squirrels, the tiny "spring peeper" frog, cardinals, blue jays, robins, mockingbirds, owls, woodpeckers, and many others. These forested areas are filled with fireflies from late June through August. During the winter, snow removal crews are at work as soon as is possible clearing the sidewalks and roadways. Public transportation is provided by the colleges, free of charge, and during the school year the buses run every 15 minutes, arriving at the various colleges in town in a matter of minutes. There are two bus stops in the complex - one in the middle and one in the front. I have lived here at the Boulders for 15 years and have had very few, other than normal, problems with appliances and laundry facilities. Repairs are done quickly and efficiently. Staff has always been very polite and responsive, and run the office in a very competent, well organized way. I love living here and it's the only place I have ever lived where I can look out my windows and see a menagerie of forest creatures and birds, all living peacefully in a protected environment. I happily give it 5 stars, and more if I could.
