Portland has received a lot of attention in recent years as the Pacific Northwest’s hub of all things ultra-hip, but there’s another Oregon community that shares Portland’s eclectic flavor without all the big city hustle and bustle. Although Bend, Oregon has been growing steadily for years, the city is surrounded by astonishing geographical variety, including deserts, mountains, and forests, making it a dream location for lovers of the outdoors. Mountain biking, golf, fishing, hiking, camping, rock climbing, whitewater rafting, and skiing are all very popular in Bend, and outdoor recreation is a major part of the local economy.
Home to an OSU campus, Central Oregon Community College, and Cascade Culinary Institute, Bend is an excellent place to get an education while enjoying the great outdoors. The city boasts an impressive selection of high-quality restaurants as well as some of the best breweries in Oregon.

Maintenance did a great job creating a facade of cleanliness and orderliness of the apartment grounds by using a leaf blower to stir dust and dirt around in the stairwells, yet if you had a maintenance request in the unit, best of luck to you. During winter we had a leak in the window of the second bedroom due to all the rain and snowfall of the season and it leaked onto our furniture and personal items. Thankfully, we put in a maintenance request to get it fixed before more damage could be done. I am happy to report our maintenance request was eventually honored....in the middle of March...by one elderly crew member walking into the room and saying they would call someone to get it caulked from the outside....oh and that didn't get done for another month. Stellar job maintenance crew. In terms of management, yikes! Move out procedure was difficult as we had to call multiple times to get updates on what needed to be done for moving out. It seemed there was a clear level of disinterest in us as tenants once we were no longer providing more cashflow for the apartment owner. We spent a full day after we moved out sweeping, scrubbing, mopping the floors, cleaning the windows (we weren't gonna get dinged for window grime), vacuuming the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, you get the idea. It was real awesome getting 1/4 of our deposit back for "cleaning fees, painting fees, and carpet repair". I guess no matter what we will get charged for window grime. Don't forget I said the apartment was disgusting and grimy when we first moved in. We tried the whole "leave it better than you found it" approach but either we are blind or they are greedy. I will say we did have one cat that scratched some of the carpet in the second bedroom entry way, but $400 to repair an entry way? Maybe I should get into the carpet repair business if it's that lucrative, or maybe management is being dishonest and up-charging repairs. We were charged at a previous residence for the same thing, but to the tune of $150, which was understandable and we took responsibility without complaint. Management will bite you any chance they get to keep as much of your deposit as possible. So even though they say small nail-holes are allowed, it turns out you're going to get charged for cleaning and painting. What an absolute joke.
I'm leaving this review to let others know that these apartments are cheaply constructed. The walls are thin and creaky. I can hear whatever my neighbors are doing, above me, below me, and next door. The plumbing is loud. Etc. If you have a high tolerance for such things, there are other positives that may justify renting here. However, if you value privacy and quiet, this is not desirable. Hope this helps someone.
I have spent my entire adult life in apartments (the last 15 years for what it's worth), and never have I stayed in an apartment as well cared for as The Commons. My husband and I lived on the property for the last 3.5 years before moving into a house and loved all of the following: - dog friendly - location by walking paths, parks, Pilot Butte - an AMAZING property management team (Leanna and Jessica are the BEST!) - Seriously, they drop mini-holiday goodie bags at each occupant's door for holidays! - an INCREDIBLE maintenance and grounds team - everything gets fixed immediately (they are genuinely kind, and shout out to Tim for being so great with our pups) - spacious and clean apartments - no smoking - parking included for two cars!
The apartment manager and assistant manager are professional, accommodating, organized, friendly and honest. Several of the apartments have been renovated with nice upgrades. The Assistant Manager and Manager have extremely quick responses to all my questions and concerns. There's a great space for gatherings and a workout room. Great location next to Pilot Butte and very safe. Maintenance crew is also very professional and quick. I highly recommend these apartments.
Nice grounds, nice neighbors, poor management..though maintenance guys were awesome. I put down 3100 deposit. Have pics of moving in and out. Followed all their mold prevention guidelines...still got bad mold! I have pics of that too. Got only 1900 back. Charged for painting...I never hung one picture they just wanted to paint over their mold to hide from next Tennant. Got charged for replacing "smelly carpet" though my carpet guy and witness said spotless except mold...also had to throw away expensive box spring due to mold damage. Very disappointed and neighbors had the same issue.
I have lived here for almost 4 months and the units are clean and fairly large. Appliances are basic so it is an average place nothing fancy but not a dump. Walls are VERY thin. You can hear your upstairs neighbors walk around and when they take a shower. Mind you the guys upstairs are not noisy at all you just can hear everything. Like I said walls are thin. They are doing construction across the street building a new apartment complex that will be managed and owned by the same company that owns the commons. Let me tell you they have done nothing to make life easier for the people living in this complex. Construction starts at 7:00 am and it is very noisy. When asked about this the front office people said there is nothing they can do. They own the complex and they could do a lot to make life easier for their current customers. But they don't. Besides the noise they have often blocked off parking on the street when parking is already an issue for this complex. Finally when I was inquiring about this place I asked twice about the possibility to have satellite tv and they answered both times that although it was difficult it was not impossible. In fact when I was taking possession of the keys they asked me which tv provider I was using and I told them cable and they said good because satellite was difficult. Well last month I inquired about switching to satellite the manager told me it was impossible and my lease actually said it was against the rules. Yes I know I should have read the lease so I own some of the responsibility but when you ask somebody you are buying a product from TWICE you expect them to answer the question honestly. So please don't make the same mistake I did and trust the answers they give you when your are thinking about moving in.
Possibly the worst place in Bend to live. The people that work here have absolutely no respect for their residents, let alone customer service. I had the maintenance person come in to my apartment and threaten me in response to a broken garbage disposal. I had to take days off work to wait for my own packages because the office wasn't cooperative. The office would deliver petty notes and tape them to my door instead of calling me with billing issues. The biggest issue was with Ashley, the office receptionist. I'm not sure if this girl needs training or if this is just the wrong position for her, but she has no ability to provide quality customer service or to de escalate a situation. I was called names, hung up on, and then she would run and tell the office manager that I was causing issues. This all led to the office putting a No Cause Eviction Notice on my door. When I called to gain any clarity as to why I was being evicted, I was given no answer except to take legal action if I didnt' like it. All of my neighbors have the exact same complaint: terrible terrible customer service from the office. I wouldn't recommend this apartment complex to my worst enemy. OVERPRICED WITH A DISRESPECTFUL STAFF.
I relocated to Bend, OR from Sarasota, FL in May of 2015. Found the Commons at Pilot Butte after much searching in the area & filtering thru high rental rates & deposit terms. Not only did I move into a newly renovated apartment, they've continued to upgrade the entire complex - inside & out! It truly is a lovely place to call home! I feel very safe as a single mom of a 17 year old son...neighbors are quiet but friendly! Love being next door to the State Park for walks & sunsets...indoor steam room & workout facility for the cooler months. Wish there was more parking for guests, but overall, this place rocks!
New to the area from Florida, I decided to rent at The Commons at Pilot Butte after searching for many un-affordable rentals in Bend. They've recently updated...everything...inside & out! My 2BR 2BA was move in ready & included a brand new energy efficient W&D. It's modern, clean & surprisingly open & large for the square footage. My only wish would be for more parking for guests & 2nd cars. I love that its right next door to a beautiful State Park, neighbors are quiet yet friendly, the office staff has been more than helpful & it's centrally located to everything. Love the balcony, & outside storage too! My teenage son & I are on the 3rd floor...we call it the "penthouse" :-) Can't say enough about our new home...being from out of state & 3,000 away from family & friends, I'm grateful for this find! As I approach the end of my 6 month lease (lease options & deposit were very reasonable as well), I'm planning to renew for another term!
The Commons offer large, spacious floor plans with ample windows/light. The location, at the foot of Pilot Butte, is fantastic. I rarely hear my neighbors and the property is well maintained. The office staff is upbeat and helpful. The only down side is the wood-look linoleum throughout the apartment (bedrooms being the exception). For the price, I would expect nicer laminates or hardwoods. Other than that, I recommend this complex.
