The Highland community lies in the southwestern corner of Saint Paul, just 10 miles from Downtown Minneapolis. Highland is to the north of Fort Snelling, adjacent to the Mississippi River.
A 50/50 blend of commercial and residential buildings, Highland residents enjoy plentiful shopping and restaurants near their apartments. Saint Catherine University resides here, and it’s in walking distance of local eateries at the corner of Cleveland Avenue South and Ford Parkway.
A predominantly residential neighborhood, there are tons of outdoor activities to do, like improving your game at the Highland National Golf Course or picnicking at Crosby Farm Park. For easy travel, residents are comforted by their proximity to Interstate 35E and the international airport. The amusement park and aquarium at Mall of America are a short 10-minute drive from Highland.

Property Ratings at The Communities of River Crossing
they dont do short term leases even though it says they do
I’ve lived here for a year and it was a disaster. These people are very unprofessional and never take any of your complaints seriousl. I have filled out many work order for my washer to get fixed and it never got fixed until one day we had the whole apartment flooded with water we were forced to call the fire department in the middle of the night. All of my furniture were destroyed in the flood. I had to move out immediately and I was charged thousands of dollars. Save yourself the headache and save your Money. You are better off living somewhere else I promise you this is the worst place and I never complain. the management are very sketchy and unprofessional. Stay away!

We are truly sorry to hear about your negative experience during your time here. It sounds like you went through a difficult situation with the water damage and the lack of timely response to your concerns. We understand how frustrating it can be to deal with the inconvenience of unexpected emergencies. It's unfortunate that your furniture got damaged and that you had to incur additional costs due to the flooding. Moving out under such circumstances can be a very stressful experience. We appreciate your honest feedback.
We lived at this site a short time till we were able to move out. Pot smoke sell in tbe building...sirens constantly in the area...people leaving food in the hallway of the building...lack of maintenance....constant lack of response or urgency of repairs from the office....no building security....fire system for building not working/repaired....trash left all over place. My recommendation is to stay far away from this site.
Smoking -- I lived in the 1375 (Pointe) building and there was constant marijuana smoking. You could smell it in the hallways, in the common areas, elevators, garage, and it came into my unit through the vents. This was reported to management multiple times but nothing every changed. Security -- I once found what looked like a homeless person sleeping in the stairwell. I also frequently found doors left propped open during day and night for unknown reasons (not even the main door). Trash -- there are obnoxious residents who leave full bags of trash in the trash rooms and don't bother to put it down the chute, and others don't close the chute door to prevent smells from escaping. The garage also often stinks of trash. Upkeep -- when I moved in, the building looked decent. When I moved out, the elevators and common areas and hallways looked awful. Scuff marks and dents everywhere, elevators frequently had spit and spit balls on the ceiling and walls. Elevators got sketchier in the months leading up to my move out and would startle you with unexpected shakes. Neighborhood -- someone was shot and murdered right outside my unit, and I awoke to gunshots in the middle of the night on multiple occasions. One time the gunshot was right outside my unit at the gas station and I watched as police arrived on scene and misfits fled in their cars. When the Ethiopian bar/restaurant across the street turns into a club at night, swarms of people show up and race on the roads and shout. Numerous times I had to put in earplugs after midnight on a weeknight because of people partying in the lot next to the gas station. One time when I drove through the low-rent apartment community across the street, I saw a drug deal happening in broad daylight. The units themselves are nice, but I was relieved when I moved out because I didn't feel safe here and worried about the effects the smoking was having on my health.
Lived here for 3 years. First 2.5 were great, but had a new tenant below us remove in recently. Noise is expected in an apartment complex, but loud music until 4:00am multiple nights a week is ridiculous. Not only that, but a lack of response by management is terrible. I’ve stopped by the leasing office in person, left numerous voicemails, and multiple email attempts to address the noise. Loud, bass music playing at all hours of the night is unacceptable anywhere, but especially for the price we pay to live here. It was a good place, but the sad responsiveness from management and a new (very loud) neighbor made our decision to not renew again a simple one.
It is expensive and I don't believe that as a renter I've received my money's worth. On four different occasions I have walked down the hall to find dog poop (big ones) on the floor in the building and I have noted wet stains on the hall carpets. The walls of the hallways and stairwells are worn and often both these areas have a sweet chemical smell too them. The outdoor green space areas are often covered with dog liter and brown grass. The swimming pool/court yards have been frequently used as party spots long after the unenforced quiet hours begin. Complaints about the noise only resulted in management telling me to either call the police or go talk to the party-goers myself. So I was left with the choice of calling the police on young people, and often people of color, and having a stupid party potentially escalate to an unsafe condition or going out and putting myself at risk by trying to break up a party that involved drinking and smoking. Upscale, luxury living? The building should have definitely hired a security guard, even if just through a temp agency. After a number of vehicle break-ins in the parking garage I discovered that the security camera system was not working. It had been damage in an electrical storm (per one of the facility employees). I inquired with the building manager about this and felt I should have been informed prior to my signing a lease as this may have influenced my decision to bring my family to live here. The response was, and I quote "it is important to note that cameras do not actually increase the safety of a building whatsoever. All of our residents are responsible for partaking in their personal safety..." I was appalled. Not only is the first assertion false, it smacks of posturing to victim blame when the inevitable happens. So for me the negatives were the noise, the cleanliness, management/facilities responsiveness to anything, kitchen appliances, overall quality and service, feeling of safety/security and my perception of the landlords philosophy of maintaining safety and security. The positives for me included proximity to freeway, airport, my work, comfort of unit, working furnace and AC, management of snow and ice removal. As a multiracial family we really appreciated the diversity in the community as there really are a lot of Latino, Hispanic, Black and Asian renters at this apartment. Still, overall I believe that people looking for an apartment will be able to find better value for their money.

The rent is the only thing about these apartments that can be called “upscale.” From at least September 2017 through January 2018, a group of squatters - who liked to play their music loudly enough that we could hear the lyrics through the master bedroom wall at all hours - occupied the apartment next to ours. The building is devoid of security. It is huge. Nobody knows anybody, and everybody lets anyone through the front door who happens to be standing there. So there is zero control over who is inside the building. In November 2017, we had two bicycles (not fancy bicycles) stolen from the garage. They were U-locked to the bike rack. So this took time, and a lot of noise, but apparently nobody noticed or said anything. January 2018, e-mail notice from management that cars were being broken into on the property. Heaps of reeking garbage and recycling pile up in the garage every single weekend. The painfully slow, rickety elevators regularly break down. Liquor bottles are regularly left in the common areas. The “state of the art fitness center” consists of three home-quality treadmills, an elliptical, a single weight machine, and a few free weights (for a community of hundreds) which are broken and out of order so often that management has laminated “out of order, service has [allegedly] been called” signs ready to place on them. The building is plagued by noise. On the Davern Street side of the building where our apartment was, not a day goes by without car alarms blaring from the Hertz rental car lot across the street at all hours. People use the busy street as a quarter mile race track. Accidents at Norfolk and Davern are common, and blasting horns from people nearly involved in accidents are more common. By the time we left, our upstairs neighbors would play fetch with their dog in the living room (pounding on the floor, “Come here, boy!”). The downstairs neighbors were fond of their rap music and would generously share the base line with us in our living room. And, the aforementioned squatters. The decorative fountain in front of the building was left unfilled (except for whatever mold and sucker trees seemed to take root there, and zika virus breeding puddles) for an entire summer. It is, of course, always an eyesore all winter long. We called it the “Pit of Cthulu.” The stench of cooking, reeking perfumes, and marijuana fills the hallways. This spring, we finally decided that we’d enjoyed as much of this place as we could stand.
