Property Ratings at The Edison
Since I moved in, there have been multiple fires, a broken fire alarm system, multiple burst pipes, mold in the stairwells & hallways, common areas with leaks almost every single day, broken washers/dryers, rodent problems, elevators that are repeatedly broken for long periods of time, maintenance staff that marks items complete without doing any work, and management staff that is frequently out of the office. And the “new” management is mostly just the same people from before.

I've been here about 4 months and will be leaving soon, but here are all of my experiences thus far: This month, a few days ago, there was a fire in the building on the 6th floor. Not a single fire alarm sounded. My boyfriend happened to be in a group chat of about 70 people, and THAT is how we were informally told to evacuate. We're grateful for those folks in that chat. 3 months into living here we got a knock on our door and we were informed the building had been in foreclosure status and would be sold that upcoming weekend, which we never knew, as we came from out of state, nor were we ever informed. On Thanksgiving weekend, that Friday night, I mistaking tripped our electrical breaker, and after informing their 24/7 desk downstairs they told us we would have to be without power for the whole weekend and that there's nothing they could do and no one they could call. I reported the building, as that's a clear violation of the Chicago electrical ordinance, but Sunday night, it was resolved, and it seems that the employee may have been fired after that incident. Needless to say, we still went almost the entire weekend without power, with a fridge full of Thanksgiving food. We were VERY unhappy. Homeless people are let into the building most nights. They're harmless, and it gives me mixed feelings. I'm just hoping none of the homeless take advantage of the kindness of whoever is letting them in and do something awful. It's just something to be aware of. Parking doesn't exist here. There's a wait list to be added to one of maybe 6-8 parking spots, which are also in use by the employees, so realistically, there are about 4 spots for the entire building. Needless to say, I've been paying for parking separately - a whopping $200 per month for a spothero parking spot. The washers and dryers are on premises, but half of the driers are broken. The rooms are stuffy with little to no air circulation. Luckily, we're here in the winter, I would hate to experience a summer here. I've never been more disappointed in an apartment complex. I'm hoping someone sues the hell out of them for the fire incident. Fortunately, my partner and I were not injured, but we most definitely took note of all the issues we found here. New ownership is coming soon, but for now BEWARE!
The place looks beautiful but there are mice everywhere for the second time I see a nice inside my apartment. Management told me last time they covered all the wholes and I wouldn’t see it again. 24 hours maintenance is a job and staff is not very polite and professional. Move somewhere else.
This is a vintage building with an interesting history as a 1920s residential hotel. The lobby is large, beautiful and well- appointed. Gym and laundry room are inconsistently maintained. Apartments are on the small side, but have several large closets. Kitchens have built-in dishwasher and microwave, and plenty of cabinets. It's an elevator building and apartments have an open-kitchen layout, which makes it partially accessible. It accommodates wheelchair users who have some ambulation. The neighborhood is diverse and lively, with abundant public transportation. Management changes often, bringing periods of chaos and confusion. Entry is via keyfob. The intercom system has been broken for months; visitors and deliveries have to call on their phones and wait outside while the resident comes down to open the door. There is a front desk, which is occasionally staffed, but more often desserted. Response to maintenance requests is inconsistent and largely ineffectual. There is regular pest control with nontoxic spraying. Pets are allowed, with some size restrictions and an additional monthly fee. Strongest pro: location/neighborhood Strongest con: poor management
I have lived in numerous apartment complexes in different states, and this easily takes the cake for the worst one and it isn’t very close. Water shutoffs occur on a regular basis, elevators are down nearly every week, many washers and dryers are broken, police visits are regular and the safety of the building is questionable at best. The apartments are in need of major renovation and for the price, I can confidently say there are better options in Chicago. The only redeeming quality is a few of the staff members are kind, and that’s about it. I would highly recommend avoiding this building if you can do so.

There is not a bone in my body that lets me believe that the management or Village Green property management cares about this building at all. Ask them the last time anything was maintained preventively- any other answer than “I’m not sure” is a lie and is completely unacceptable

The management and it's responsible company has made it very clear that they do not care about the safety and maintenance of this building, as well of the residents that live here. Good luck getting any answer from the management! The turnover of staff is constant and their response to any concern is never taken seriously.

I'm going to keep this real simple. Why this place has gone down hill in the past 7 months: - tenants moving out right and left. - rodent issues ( mice) -constant broken elevators - people finding themselves stuck in the elevators -owners that don't care at all - vandalism - homeless people sleeping in lobby - tenants being assulated by other tenants. - regular visits from the police or fire dept - random water shut-offs without notice. - Plumbing issues - management office that does not respond to emails or concerns. - no concierge ( even though they falsely advertise that on their site) -cockroaches - revolving door of maintaince workers - water tempature issues. They will probably response to this saying they take these things seriously, but if they actually did, these issues wouldn't be constant.

Worst building I’ve ever lived in. Be ready for a constant turnover of staff while nobody knows what’s going on. Homeless people sleeping in the lobby. Residents so mad they throw bricks through the management office windows. Elevators that go down weekly. Constant water shut offs. Major hot water issues. Cockroaches and bed bugs. Completely incompetent.

We've been living at The Edison for just over a month now and we love it. It's in a great location, just a short walk to the lake and right across the street from a grocery store. It feels like Chicago living without paying downtown Chicago prices. Our apartment is very spacious with lots of storage space. Kitchen has everything you need, with lots of cupboard storage as well. We have plenty of windows for natural light and a great cross breeze to keep the apartment cool. The facility itself is great. It has nice common area with tv's and a pool table. It also has a free gym with all modern equipment so we save on having to pay a gym membership elsewhere every month. Some areas of the building are under renovation but we never hear them. It's also pet friendly which we found to be quite rare amongst other buildings in the area. The staff regularly host social gatherings and provide food and drinks for everyone. The new management are definitely heading in the right direction with turning this place into a welcoming home for everyone.
Folks, this place looks appealing with the 1920's look, but it runs like a 1920's building. Ever since I have been here there has been ongoing construction fixing the broken pipes on top of God knows what else, broken elevators and our dryers and washers have not worked in almost 2 months. The property manager, Kelly, seems a little angry all the time and treats you as if you are a burden to her and is unapproachable. To paint a clearer picture, I finally had to write the owner cause all of our requests for fixes in our unit were going ignored and then I was ignored by the owner Drew who didn't have time acknowledge a concerned resident. I always believe in second chances and was close to extending my lease with the faith and hope this would get better and quite frankly, moving is a pain - but after hearing the property manager, Kelly complain to a co-worker about how the tenants never listen to her - that was sorta the reminder from God to get out. Kelly, maybe if you listened to your tenants - they would listen to you. I don't know - try it sometime. STAY AWAY from this place - all the other tenants I talk to feel the same way - that this location looks great on paper, but living here is a whole different story! View Less Was this review helpful? Honestly a stressful place to live. A continual construction mess. Abnormally inconvenient situations around every corner in my 16 months here. I see people touring here that seem nice and I want to tell them to look elsewhere, thus my review.

I do love my microliving apartment here. If I could transplant this apartment into a better building, I would. The building is old. It's far from perfect. The communal spaces are lovely and the apartment finishes are as well. But there are constant water issues throughout the building, ranging from rusty water, no hot water in the kitchen, leaks in the ceiling, and floods in the lobby and god knows where else. It's not winter yet, so I can't speak to the radiators working or not... but my hopes are not high. There was a cockroach problem in the lobby this summer (thank god never in my apartment), but they now are on a regular exterminator schedule and I haven't seen any since. Same with a tiny mouse that kept being spotted in different apartments. The laundry room is a disaster. Water on the floor all the time, and the machines smell of mildew. There are a number of machines, but if you're lucky enough to go down there at the same time as some jerk who is doing 10 loads, good luck, cuz they also don't come back to pick their stuff, so the dryers are unavailable for hours. "24-hour door staff" is hardly true. And "24-hour maintenance" is a lie. And then there are the elevators. Only one working elevator for all of the tenants... which is very often used by the construction staff. When that one goes down, they commandeer the freight elevator, which is terribly disruptive (I can hear it bumping up and down in my apartment). Currently the freight is broken, so they 're letting construction workers use the passenger elevators. Are they kidding? I really wanted to love it here. Most of the staff are really great, apart from one old codger who works the front desk. But I would not suggest anyone live here, and I'm hoping to get out as soon as my lease is up. Sorry Edison... you tried (or did you?)

I have been in my one bedroom apartment for a month so far. PROS: Apartment is newly renovated and pretty nice. Location is fantastic, right across from Mariano's close to public transit and the beach. Neighbors have been friendly so far as well as the staff. Concierge has been there 24/7 and building seems secure. Building has a gym that is decent enough to cancel a membership somewhere else. CONS: A lot of amenities that we were told would be done are no where close. No package room, no trash chute, no new elevator yet. Rent is a little pricey for the area but is reasonable. Flooring is pretty creaky in the hallways and apartment. Location is loud, a lot of emergency vehicles at all times of the day and night due to the close proximity of old folks homes. The closest parking is 2 blocks from the building Water has only been shut off one time, I do not have rusty water, construction seems done (I dont see dust or hear saws and hammers), never seen a rat or bugs,.
Don't move here too much rent you could be downtown they keep the doors open they barley have concierge 24 hr's. Only one elevator work in the building it has been down for like 2 years they still have not attempted to fix it. The one elevator they do have break down periodically you have to walk up all them stairs you only get like 25$ knocked off your rent for that inconvenience. Don't be fooled by the lobby and festivities that they just added like the pool table flat screen TVs cable community internet and an upgraded fitness room with equipment. It's not worth it too much they go up on your rent $250 every year. Try other options you will come out better they have no parking they are in the process of building one just don't get your valuables in your car stolen. The building does have cameras but they are just for show they don't work. They say you pay for trash their is no trash shoot they are giving you misleading information. You have nosey neighbors in the building so you have no privacy at all. The water is very filthy in the pipes all rusted water. Good area but don't move here!!!! You be glad you did not fall for this big mistake!

This property has outstanding customer service as well as a great location. The apartments are drawn out so we have our own personal space outside. Which in a city of millions of people, it is nice to feel a little somewhat secluded at times. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone who asked me about it!
I moved into the building in 2009 and have not regretted it OTHER than I would like my own outside space, which is personal preference, not a fault of the building. The building is well maintained and the owners are quick to respond to issues, which is huge considering some of the horror stories I've heard about other landlords. Mariano's is right across the street. Express bus to downtown is basically right outside the door and the red line is a couple blocks away---perfect for people that work downtown. I do get my outside space satisfied by walking to the lake which is just a couple blocks away. Overall great place to live.
Great apartment! I have been living here for about 3 years now and I can honestly say I have never seen any bugs or spiders!! Also I live how the apartment complex is very diverse!!
Its a basic apartment with lesser rent. Suitable for people whose income is lesser but wanted to stay near to bus stop. Opposite is Marianos which is a good advantage.
